GOING COULD CHANGE BEFORE RACING on WEDNESDAY AT ROYAL ASCOT

The going remains

Good

after another dry night.
royalascot2013
Chris Stickels, Clerk of the Course, said this morning: "The jockeys and trainers seemed really happy with the ground yesterday and everything went very well on a great racing surface for the first day of Royal Ascot.

"I thought the ground might dry a bit more yesterday. I think it will dry a little bit today.

"We have it GOOD at the moment but I am anticipating a change to Good, Good To Firm in places should it remain dry by racetime.

"The straight course seems very fair right across. We could have thundery showers after racing today and tonight. Tomorrow looks to be a mixture of sunshine and showers.

"Today is going to be very warm but it will become cooler from tomorrow."

Opening day crowd up, ground remains Good

royalascot2013CROWD

Attendance for today's opening day of Royal Ascot came to 46,359. This is just ahead of the 2012 opening day attendance of 46,297.

GROUND

Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels was delighted with the way the ground rode on the first day of Royal Ascot and will keep the going description at Good overnight.

He said: "There is a possibility of a shower or two but if we miss them and the dry conditions we had today prevail once again, then good to firm could enter the going description sometime tomorrow."

EXTORTIONIST FIRST FOR ROBINS FARM RACING

Olly Stevens and his wife Hetta trained their first Royal Ascot winner in their debut season when Extortionist landed the Windsor Forest Stakes for two-year-olds.

royalascot2013The victory completed a 152/1 double for jockey Johnny Murtagh, who had won the King's Stand Stakes on Sole Power earlier on the card. On this occasion Murtagh wore the colours of Qatar Racing, a partnership involving the Al Thani brothers of Qatar. They own Robins Farm, which is the Stevens' base near Chiddingfold in Sussex.

The winner, a 16/1 shot, is a son of Dandy Man, a first-season sire. Stevens said: "It feels fantastic - Hetta and I have dreamed of this all our lives, but this win is testament to David Redvers [who is piloting the Qatar Racing project with Sheikh Fahad Al Thani], to Sheikh Fahad and all the team. It was David who picked out the horse as a yearling and I'm so glad we can repay Sheikh Fahad's faith in us.

"We had realistic targets for this year, but feel we have gone above those already. We're in a lucky position."

Extortionist won his first race, but was only fourth at York next time out. Stevens said: "He came back from Nottingham with a sore shin and I had to swim him in to his race at York, where he was four lengths below his best. I was furious with myself that day, but put him away after that and we've known he was always a fast horse.

"Next could be the July Stakes and we'll work away from there."

Sheikh Fahad said: "This is fantastic for Robins Farm and wonderful for a first-season trainer. The horse has done so well because the pace of the race was on the far side but he has won on the stands' side. I've always thought of him as a Royal Ascot horse and it's lovely to see him win."

GENEROUS EXTORTIONIST TAKES THE LAST

Johnny Murtagh, who completed a 152/1 double today when taking the last, the Windsor Castle Stakes, on Extortionist for owners Qatar Racing and first season trainer Olly Stevens, said: "It worked out well and I got a nice tow into the race the horse did very well - he went to the start very well and behaved well in the stalls. He was a little bit keen for the first half-a-furlong but as soon as I got in behind Kieren Fallon (on board Haikbidac) he settled lovely and he was always going to win when I pulled him out with a furlong and a half to go. He responded well and was very generous - it was a good win for the team. I think he will improve for this. He was impressive on his first start but blew up on his second but he will improve again for this."

David Redvers, racing advisor for the Dandy Man colt's owners, Qatar Racing added: "I am almost more excited by My Catch (Qatar Racing's other runner who finished fifth). I don't know where we will go - I suppose we will have to think about races like the Molecomb or the Richmond at Glorious Goodwood. He will come on - he is very burly horse, very strong and can only improve. What an amazing achievement for Olly Stevens (Trainer) and his best horse is still to run [Green Door, who is declared for the Norfolk Stakes on Thursday]. Come Green Door!"

Murtagh Banned

There was a sting in the tail for Murtagh who received a two-day ban for use of the whip when winning on Extortionist. The stewards found that he was in breach of Schedule (B)6 part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. His ban is on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 2 and 3.

Winning jockey:-Name: Murtagh, John Patrick Born: May 14, 1970 Background: Attended the Apprentice Jockeys School at Kildare while serving as an apprentice for John Oxx, with whom he stayed with until 2004. Apprentice champion in 1989, winning the senior version in 1995 and 1998, despite lingering weight problems. Used regularly by Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 when Kieren Fallon was injured, and won 12 Group One contests in that season alone. Spent some of 2006 riding over hurdles, but returned to flat racing later that year, and spent 2007 as Ballydoyle's main jockey in Britain, following the suspension of Kieren Fallon on suspicion of race-fixing, before being given the job full-time because of Fallon's 18 month ban for failing a drugs test. Split from Ballydoyle in November, 2010, to become retained jockey for the Aga Khan in Ireland. HE'S WELL SHARP IN ASCOT STAKES

An English stable finally grabbed a winner at Royal Ascot 2013, but the victory of Well Sharp in the Ascot Stakes was master-minded by a group of Irishmen.

royalascot2013The five-year-old is trained by Gloucestershire-based Jonjo O'Neill, he runs in the colours of J P McManus and was ridden by Fran Berry. A ready winner by two and a half lengths from runner-up Tiger Cliff, Well Sharp could be back at Ascot on Saturday to tackle the Queen Alexandra Stakes, the Royal meeting's longest contest.

Berry reckons that event over two miles, six furlongs, another quarter of a mile further than today's event, will be no bother to the horse, who was bought by McManus to go jumping - this was an unexpected bonus.

The winning jockey said: "If he comes out of today's race okay why shouldn't he run again on Saturday? He enjoyed going a longer distance today and another two furlongs shouldn't be a problem. Today's race was a bit stop-start, but Graham Lee gave me a nice lead [on third-placed Lieutenant Miller] and my fellow picked up well and ran to the line in good style.

"Horses can back up in this race and again on Saturday, so why not? He stretched good off a stop-start pace and that's a good sign. This is a meeting you want to be involved in."

O'Neill said: "That's my second Royal Ascot winner [Gipsy Fiddler in the 1990 Windsor Castle Stakes was his first] which is great. I must do this a bit more often.

"He's a lovely horse but he has had his problems and he doesn't really like jumping as much as the Flat. The team at home have done a great job, but whether we come back again Saturday will depend on how he comes out of the race. We won't rush him."

FIRST ROYAL ASCOT RUNNER COMES SECOND

Lady Jane Cecil, widow of Sir Henry Cecil, came close to saddling her first Royal winner with her first runner.

Tiger Cliff, ridden by Tom Queally, finished second to Well Sharp, two and a half lengths adrift at the line after the two and a half miles of the Ascot Handicap.

She said: "He got the trip well and we are delighted with his performance.

"We have Chigun (Duke Of Cambridge Stakes) tomorrow and he is in great form.

"There is Riposte in the Ribblesdale (Thursday) and we could not be more pleased with her.

"On Friday we have Joyeuse (Albany Stakes) and Disclaimer who Henry always thought would be a Queen's Vase horse. There is Thomas Chippendale in the Hardwicke Stakes.

"To have one winner would be lovely. All the lads are pulling together - I could not have asked for any more."

Tiger Cliff is owned by a Henry Ponsonby Syndicate as is the third Lieutenant Miller, trained by Nicky Henderson.

Ponsonby said: "It was great thrill with two wonderful horses.

"To be able to get two to run in this race was amazing in itself and then have them run so well."

WAR COMMAND MAKES IT FOUR ON TROT FOR IRELAND

A stunning performance by runaway winner War Command in the Coventry Stakes made it four wins from four for Irish trainers on the opening day of Royal Ascot.

royalascot2013The son of War Front was completing a double on the day for the team behind Queen Anne Stakes winner Declaration Of War, namely trainer Aidan O'Brien, part/owner and breeder Joseph Allen, and the Coolmore triumvirate of Messrs Magnier, Tabor and Smith. However, O'Brien's son Joseph finished unplaced this time on favourite Stubbs, and it was another Ballydoyle stalwart, Seamie Heffernan, who rode the winner. In third was another O'Brien runner, Sir John Hawkins, the mount of Ryan Moore.

Allen, who lives in Florida, but is visiting Royal Ascot with his wife Annette, said: "This is surreal - it could not get better than this. I did not expect the first winner [Declaration Of War] because he was so disappointing on his previous run in the Lockinge Stakes, but this is a horse I have always liked.

"He's had a few issues - he had a splint [a cannon bone issue] at one point - but he's come around and what he did today was scary. His dam, Wandering Star, has a US Ranger filly foal at foot - I bred and raced US Ranger with the same team [Magnier, Tabor and Smith]."

"I've been involved with horses for 35 years, and this is the highlight. To win two major races on the first day of Royal Ascot is a dream."

War Command was given quotes of 5/1 for next year's QIPCO 2,000 Guineas by Paddy Power, and 10/1 by Ladbrokes.

PARBOLD WILL IMPROVE

"The winner went too fast." said Richard Fahey as his second-placed charge, Parbold, was led in after the Group Two Coventry Stakes

"We wouldn't have beaten the winner anyway but Tony (Hamilton, jockey) thought he was better for another two or three lengths." continued Fahey "In race riding you make a decision and decide who the fancied ones are and you go that way Today it didn't happen.

"He is entered in several large two-year-old sales races and it would be hard not to run him in them.

"I nearly pulled him out of his last race (soft-ground maiden at York, his only other start.) because of the ground - this is more his going.

"He's got loads of scope and will improve for racing. He is a very laid back horse and he will come on again for that.  He's an absolute gent."

Tony Hamilton, who rode the six-length runner-up added: "We didn't get the clearest of passages but I think he was second best. I think he is pretty good and will come on for that."
