Godolphin pair head QIPCO Sussex Stakes 49

Europe's leading three-year-old Dawn Approach and older miler Farhh, both owned by Godolphin, headline 49 entries (up from 37 in 2012) for Glorious Goodwood's top race, the £300,000 Group One QIPCO Sussex Stakes, which is run over a mile on the second day, Wednesday, July 31.

goodwoodDawn Approach, trained in Ireland by Jim Bolger, gained the European Champion Two-Year-Old title last season and extended his unbeaten record to seven with an impressive five-length success in the Group One QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket over a mile on May 4. He attempts to stay another half-mile in the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Saturday (June 1).

Farhh, from the Newmarket stable of Saeed bin Suroor, filled the runner-up spot in four consecutive Group One contests last year, including when beaten six lengths by the mighty Frankel in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, and returned this season with a dazzling four-length victory over Sovereign Debt in the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 18.

Ireland's champion Aidan O'Brien has made 15 entries, the most of any trainer, who are headed by easy Irish 2,000 Guineas scorer Magician, the 2012 Group One St James's Palace Stakes victor Most Improved, and Lockinge Stakes fifth Declaration Of War.

As well as Magician, O'Brien has entered 11 other three-year-olds including Group One-winning juveniles Pedro The Great and George Vancouver, the highly-regarded Cristoforo Columbo and QIPCO 1000 Guineas third Moth.

The Classic generation could also be represented by QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Glory Awaits, Craven Stakes winner Toronado, who is one of five entries for Goodwood's leading trainer Richard Hannon, and exciting fillies Just The Judge and Flotilla, who annexed the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) respectively.

There are exciting older fillies and mares, including Sajjhaa, a dual Group One winner in Dubai for Godolphin earlier this year, the Wildenstein Family's Beauty Parlour from the stable of Sir Henry Cecil who sent out the great Frankel to win the QIPCO Sussex Stakes in the last two years, and the John Gosden-trained Elusive Kate.

Four-year-old Elusive Kate was the joint top-rated two-year-old filly in Europe in 2011 after a three-length win in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac and doubled her Group One tally last season when taking the Prix Rothschild at Deauville, France, in July. The daughter of Elusive Quality was last seen out in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO at Ascot in October, finishing third.

Patrick Barbe, racing manager to her owner Teruya Yoshida, revealed: "It will be up to John Gosden but the QIPCO Sussex Stakes is an option for Elusive Kate.

"She had a very good season in 2012 and was probably unlucky not to win the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket as well. Not only did she stumble coming out of the stalls, but one of her shoes twisted badly and it's a miracle she didn't hurt herself. She was basically running on three wheels that day.

"It is so far so good with her this season and she will probably start off at Royal Ascot next month in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes over a mile. We will see how she gets on and take it from there.

"As we experienced with Sahpresa, there is a very good programme for the older filles and mares in the second half of the season so there is no point racing early."

Other notable QIPCO Sussex Stakes entries include Dubai World Cup fourth Side Glance, trained by Andrew Balding, Roger Varian's Lockinge Stakes third Aljamaaheer, and Group Two Sandown Mile scorer Trumpet Major.

Adam Waterworth, Managing Director of Goodwood Racecourse, commented: "The entries for the 2013 QIPCO Sussex Stakes are strong both in terms of quality and numerbers. We are delighted.

"All of the leading milers from Britain, Ireland and France have been entered, which is very positive.

"There is a good mix of three-year-olds and older horses - that is what the QIPCO Sussex Stakes is all about."

The QIPCO Sussex Stakes is part of the British Champions Series.

Glorious Goodwood takes place from Tuesday, July 30 through to Saturday, August 3 inclusive at the world's most beautiful racecourse and is an intoxicating mix of high-class horseracing, fashion and social occasion.

Friday Night Sold Out At Goodwood Racecourse

The first of Goodwood Racecourse's Three Friday Nights - this Friday, May 31 - is a sell-out.

Rudimental, headlining the event after racing, are performing at Goodwood for the first time.

The Hackney electronic music quartet have had an incredible year, with two chart-topping singles and a number one debut album.

They said today: "We cannot wait to be opening the first Friday at Goodwood. Festival season has officially started and we are going to have the dance floor jumping."

The introduction of Three Friday Nights has been one of most successful innovations at Goodwood in recent years.
goodwood
The evenings feature horseracing followed by a DJ set performed by top artists. A quick change transforms the parade ring from being horse-focused to a huge dance floor under the stars, complete with laser show.

The first of the six races on Friday is at 6.05pm (the gates open at 4.30pm). The Gordon's Amateur Riders' Handicap is run over nine furlongs and has attracted 23 entries.

Simon Walker, champion Flat male amateur for the eighth time in 2012, is likely to partner Wordismybond for trainer Peter Makin or Bloodsweatandtears for local handler William Knight. The 40-year-old has enjoyed three winners at Goodwood so far during his riding career.

The feature event is the £14,000 British Stallions Supporting British Racing EBF Fillies' Handicap (7.45pm). There are 21 entries for the six-furlong dash. This race is followed by the 12-furlong Levy Restaurants Handicap (8.15pm & 15 entries) and the concluding TFN Fillies' Maiden (8.45pm & 29 entries) at a mile.

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood Racecourse's Clerk of the Course, commented this afternoon after walking the course: "Following 15 millimetres of rain today, the going is now Good to Soft. The GoingStick reading is 7.4.

"There is warmer and drier weather predicted from tomorrow and I expect the going will not be far off Good on Friday evening."

Though Rudimental are sold out, Three Friday Nights continue on June 14 with Groove Armada's Andy Cato, who has chosen the day to release an 18-track collection entitled, 'Time and Places' - an audio reminder of the history of the past 20 years of British dance music culture, and June 21 with Trevor Nelson whose collection album held the number one spot for five weeks in the UK.

Tickets are available at the moment from www.goodwood.com but booking in advance is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.

LAST WEEK'S MAY FESTIVAL ENDS UP FINE

The three-day May Festival at Goodwood Racecourse, in the second year of its reincarnation, concluded on Saturday (May 25) with a tremendous card featuring the £50,000 32Red Handicap, won by the Sussex course's Racing Ambassador Hayley Turner on You Da One, and two £40,000 Listed events, the 32Red Festival Stakes and the Tapster Stakes which went to Frankel's brother Noble Mission.

You Da One, who made all, was Hayley Turner's third Goodwood winner of 2013 and she shares the top spot among the jockeys with Kieren Fallon.

Local trainer Amanda Perrett enjoyed a 100 per cent record at the May Festival, saddling three runners and gaining three victories thanks to Saucy Minx, Arch Villain and Head Of Steam

Two other trainers also have had three winners at Goodwood this year - Sir Michael Stoute and the leading trainer at the track, Richard Hannon, whose double on Friday was completed by Magic City, part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, in the seven-furlong Reheat Handicap.

The excellent racing and good weather delivered a large crowd on Saturday, though the weather was not as kind on the first two days

The total attendance at the May Festival came to 23,000, which was up to expectations.

Adam Waterworth, Goodwood Racecourse's Managing Director, reflected: "But for the disappointing weather on the first two days, the May Festival would have attracted 25,000 racegoers. We were still pretty pleased with the attendance over the three days.

"We applied for Group Three status for the Tapster Stakes last year and, with Noble Mission winning this year, we will do so again at the end of the season.

"It was more than disappointing that we ended up with two runners in the CASCO EBF Cocked Hat Stakes on Friday, but we have no plans to change the race conditions of this Listed contest which delivered winners of the calibre of Michelangelo, Masked Marvel and Rewilding the previous three years."

STRONG ATR AUDIENCES IN 2013 DESPITE WEATHER ABANDONMENTS

ATR not experiencing the same year on year ratings decline as Channel 4 Racing

At The Races, the UK and Ireland's largest and most widely distributed dedicated horse racing channel, today released its official audience data for the first quarter of 2013.

At The RacesThe data, compiled by BARB and Nielsen, showed ATR continued to deliver robust audience reach figures in the UK and Ireland of around 2 million viewers each month during the period. This performance is despite a significant increase in fixture abandonments in Q1 2013 versus Q1 2012 which hampered ratings delivery. The actual average monthly reach January-March 2013 was 1.96 million viewers versus 2.05 million in the same period in 2012. The number of races from ATR tracks lost to abandonments in Q1 2013 was up more than 180% on Q1 2012 (315 versus 112). That figure represents 16.85% of the total scheduled races in the period versus just 6.39% that were abandoned in Q1 2012.

Matthew ImiChief Executive, At The Races, said "We are pleased with this Q1 performance given the exceptional circumstances we've had to cope with early in the year. From this position we are targeting a full year 2013 average monthly reach of over 2 million viewers and we expect to exceed our peak monthly reach from last year which was 2.15 million. The data confirms that ATR enjoys a loyal and passionate fan base. We're able to deliver consistently large racing audiences across platforms."

AN INVESTEC DERBY TO LOOK FORWARD TO AT EPSOM DOWNS ON SATURDAY

The 234th running of the Investec Derby, the most famous Classic of all, has 15 contenders going forward after today's £75,000 supplementary entry and five-day confirmation stages.

Investec Derby Festival 2013Chopin, as expected, was supplemented this morning and the Andreas Wohler-trained three-year-old colt will become the first German runner if lining up on Saturday. He is a 9/1 chance with Coral, official betting partner of the Investec Derby Festival,

The winner of Britain's richest race of the year (£1,379,500) will emerge shortly after 4pm on June 1, before a huge crowd at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Unbeaten Dawn Approach, trained by Jim Bolger (successful in the Investec Derby with the colt's sire New Approach in 2008) in Ireland and running in the Godolphin colours, is the strong favourite at 10/11 with Coral for the 2013 Investec Derby but there are plenty of likely challengers.

The most interesting is Magician (9/2), the impressive winner of the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas over a mile on Saturday (May 25) at the Curragh.

Two winners of the Irish 2,000 Guineas, founded in 1921, have gone on to win the Derby - Grundy in 1975 and Santa Claus in 1964.

The most recent attempt to capture both Classics came in 2005 when Dubawi, owned by Godolphin and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, finished third to Motivator at Epsom Downs.

Aidan O'Brien, who trains Magician, tried for the double with Saffron Walden in 1999 but the three-year-old colt could only finish seventh to Oath in the Derby.

All the above happened when there was at least a 14-day gap between the two Classics, whereas this year there is only seven days.

As well as Magician, O'Brien has five more colts in the Investec Derby, which he has won three times - with Camelot (2012), High Chaparral (2002) and Galileo (2001).

They are Battle Of Marengo (9/2), winner of his last five races, Festive Cheer (33/1), Flying The Flag (40/1), QIPCO 2000 Guineas sixth Mars (12/1) and the unbeaten Ruler Of The World (9/1).

Andre Fabre sent out Pour Moi to win the Investec Derby two years ago and France's 24-time champion trainer is hoping Ocovango (7/1), successful on all three of his starts, can emulate that victory.

Betfred Dante winner Libertarian (16/1), who would be the first Derby winner trained in the North of England since Dante in 1945 if successful, is the main British-trained hope. He is trained by Elaine Burke at Middleham in Yorkshire.

Bolger, responsible for Dawn Approach who was the impressive winner of the first British colts' Classic, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, has also left Trading Leather (40/1)- third to Magician on Saturday - in the Investec Derby.

Bolger said this afternoon: "Trading Leather has been left in the Investec Derby as a precaution. If anything were to happen to Dawn Approach, I would run Trading Leather.

"Dawn Approach is continuing to please me and I am looking forward to running him in the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday.

"I thought Magician's performance on Saturday was very smart."

The two other potential Irish challengers are the David Wachman-trained Galileo Rock (40/1) and the Andy Oliver-trained First Cornerstone (80/1).

Mirsaale (80/1) is the only course winner among the Investec Derby hopefuls, with the James Tate-trained colt winning the Investec Derby Trial over 10 furlongs on April 24.

Ocean Applause (500/1) is the outsider of the likely Investec Derby field after three unplaced efforts this year for trainer John Ryan.

Coral's David Stevens commented: "Dawn Approach remains odds-on favourite for the Investec Derby, but his closest challenger in the betting could turn out to be a fellow 2,000 Guineas winner in Magician, and if the latter makes a quick reappearance on Saturday, Joseph O'Brien's decision on who he rides could well determine whether Magician or Battle Of Marengo starts clear second favourite to the Godolphin colt."

THE GOING IS NOW GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES BUT RAIN FORECAST TOMORROW

The going at Epsom Downs Racecourse changed at 8am to Good, Good to Firm in places.

Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs, said: "The going has been given today as Good, Good to Firm in places as a result of a third consecutive dry and breezy day in a row.

"There is rain forecast for tomorrow (Tuesday) but the exact amount we will see is hard to predict - most forecasts suggest at least six millimetres. It would not take much rain to bring the going description back to good.

"Unsettled weather is forecast for Wednesday, with drier conditions prevailing for the Investec Derby Festival on Friday and Saturday.

"The 2013 Investec Derby is an intriguing Classic, with a very strong Irish challenge, while the French and German runners are fascinating and the home challenge is limited to three."

As expected, Banoffee has been supplemented at a cost of £30,000 by trainer Hughie Morrison following her impressive success in the Listed Cheshire Oaks on May 8, when she had the John Gosden-trained Gertrude Versed in second.

Heading the market at 5/2 with Coral, official betting partner of the 2013 Investec Derby Festival, is Secret Gesture, one of two entries going forward for trainer Ralph Beckett. The three-year-old daughter of Galileo was a facile 10-length winner of the Listed Oaks Trial at Lingfield Park on May 11.

Beckett's other entry is Talent, who also made a winning start to the season when taking the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on May 5. Beckett won the 2008 Investec Oaks with Look Here.

Liber Nauticus, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, became very prominent in the Investec Oaks betting after winning the Group Three Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York on May 15 and is unbeaten in two starts.

Roz, sired by Teofilo, put up her best performance of 2012 when second in the Group One Shadwell Fillies' Mile at Newmarket in late September.

She reappeared this year in the first British fillies' Classic, the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, over a mile at Newmarket on May 5 when she finished 10th of 15 to Sky Lantern.

The Dunlop family has a strong connection with the Investec Oaks, with Harry's father John saddling Circus Plume (1984) and Salsabil (1990) to victory, while the 2004 scorer Ouija Board and the 2010 winner Snow Fairy were trained by his brother Ed.

Harry Dunlop revealed: "The plan is to run Roz in the Investec Oaks. She has been fine since the Guineas and has come on a lot for the run.

"They went a bit too quick for her at Newmarket and I'm hoping the longer distance in the Oaks will suit her. It was still an encouraging run at Newmarket but going that half a stride slower will give us a chance to get involved.

"I don't think the course will hold any fears for her. I have been doing some work with her here on undulating gallops and she has obviously run at the Rowley Mile with that dip in there. I know that's nothing like Epsom and, although we are trying to do everything possible, we won't know until she tries it.

"I think the Investec Oaks is very open. Obviously, there are the top four or five but the likes of ourselves have every chance to be there.

"Ralph Beckett's filly (Secret Gesture) looks the best on what we have seen but ultimately Sir Michael Stoute's filly (Liber Nauticus) could improve and then you have Moth for Aidan O'Brien.

"Hopefully, Johnny Murtagh will ride Roz. It's a possibility and we have spoken to his agent and fingers crossed that's who we have got.

"I wouldn't count on it until we have declared her but hopefully that is the plan. Johnny has won the Oaks before and the Derby three times so there is no better man than him around Epsom."

O'Brien, seeking a fifth Investec Oaks victory, has retained three entries, headed by QIPCO 1000 Guineas third Moth. Moth is likely to be joined by stablemate Say, runaway winner of a 12-furlong maiden at Cork on May 10, while Snow Queen goes for tomorrow's Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.

Michael Bell, successful with Sariska in 2009, is likely to be doubly represented by The Lark, who is out of a half-sister to Sariska, and Madame Defarge, who was third behind Talent at Newmarket.

Completing the possible line-up for the 2013 Investec Oaks is Miss You Too (David Simcock), who was second to Secret Gesture at Lingfield.
