Kauto Star is retired

As reported on Betfair.com by his trainer Paul Nicholls.

Kauto and Paul pictured in Ditcheat after that legendary fifth King George win
Paul Nicholls and Clive Smith have taken the decisio to retire Kauto Star this morning. Paul reflects on the great chaser - and a tough decision - in this Betfair exclusive
The end of an era has finally arrived. Clive was here this morning and we have taken the decision to retire Kauto Star.
We have had nine superb years with the horse but, after seeing him in his work these past few weeks, myself, Clifford and Dan were of the opinion that the time had arrived to retire him.
Of course, as owner, the final decision rested with Clive, but he agreed that the horse had done enough.
Don't get me wrong, Kauto looks and feels as vibrant as ever, as those who saw him at our owners' Open Day last month would testify to. He was mad fresh that day and continues to be as alert as ever and very, very well in himself.
But I suspect Kauto will be like that when he is 20-years-old.
And, deep down, we know he has done enough - and in some ways I think we have to protect him from himself. And maybe ourselves, too. If he did go to Kempton and win or run well, would you really want to run him - or be able to resist the temptation - in the Gold Cup?
I am not so sure.
Kauto is signing off in full health and after a season in which he proved so many people wrong by winning a fifth King George and a fourth Betfair Chase, to add to his two Cheltenham Gold Cups and Tingle Creeks.
Who wouldn't want to train a horse of this quality any more? He is a once-in-a-lifetime horse, after all.
Ever since he won on his debut for me at Newbury on December 29, 2004, the horse has consistently proved himself a class apart. And a £1m Betfair Million bonus in 2007 and 16 Grade 1 wins later, who would bet against him going to Kempton in December and making it number 17?
But sometimes, you have to listen to your head and your heart, and both told me that retirement was the only option.
You are a long time retired - as a certain Sir Alex Ferguson soon realised after stating his intention to step down as United manager some 10 years ago - and particularly if you are as naturally exuberant, intelligent and inquisitive as this great horse.
I get that.
Who else is going to put the up-and-coming youngsters in their place on the 5f gallop now, and put a smile on Clifford's face every morning - no mean feat that! - if he is retired?
But, knowing Kauto, he would still be coming back in after grass at the age of 14 still looking and working brilliantly, and giving us that burning question to answer.
And delaying my honest take on the retirement question would have probably been just selfishness and stubbornness on my part too - the equivalent of a football manager desperately clinging on to his best, if ageing player - and sometimes you have to look to the future and at the bigger picture.
But at the end of the day Kauto is Clive's horse, not mine. And he made the call this morning. And a brave and difficult one it would have been, too, so all credit to him.
But Kauto is also a public horse now, every bit as much as Desert Orchid, and to us here at Ditcheat that had to be a factor in the decision to retire. And while it would have been brilliant to go out on a winning high - remember Dessie's last race was a fall at Kempton - I don't think anyone present at Cheltenham last March would view Kauto's final appearance on a racetrack as a failure.
The spontaneous applause he got from the crowd when he was pulled up genuinely lifted the spirits of all the team here - and it is the team here, from Clifford down, and Clive, that made Kauto what he became - at what was a low moment.
Disappointment was immediately replaced by pride, and that is the overwhelming emotion I feel when looking at the horse.
Ever since then, Clive and I have discussed retirement at regular intervals.
But now the decision has been made it will be very strange to look out of my office window and not see Kauto's head and Denman's arse sticking out the main two boxes - or indeed Clive's Master Minded, for that matter.
Because Kauto Star will be the hardest of acts to follow.
He has given me my best days in the sport and, even though the Gold Cups and King Georges are the pinnacles for any staying chaser, with his 2009 Kempton win breathtakingly impressive, the raw emotion that followed his Haydock win last November will live longest in my memory.
I had to hold myself together to stop myself being in floods of tears that day, and I just about managed it.
But whatever the future holds, I am certain that Clive and all us here at Ditcheat will reflect on a magnificent past and I am sure we will both go on searching for the unattainable in the future.
Namely, a horse to replace the irreplaceable legend that was, and is, Kauto Star.

RESTLESS HARRY BIDDING FOR BACK-TO-BACK WINS IN JOHN SMITH'S HURDLE AT WETHERBY

Restless Harry won the £32,000 Grade Two John Smith's Hurdle (2.50pm, 11 entries) in tremendous style last season when scoring by 20 lengths and the eight-year-old is on course for a repeat bid in the three mile, one furlong contest at Wetherby on Saturday, November 3, 2012, day two of the bet365 Charlie Hall Meeting.

wetherbyWarwickshire-based Dickin said today: "Restless Harry is very likely to run in the John Smith's Hurdle. He is very well and he has been working very well. I would say he has strengthened up over the summer and he is a lot more grown up in his head than he was.

"On September 1, we moved stables and definitely all the surroundings and turn out really suit him - he is very calm and relaxed now.

"I was very pleased with how he performed last season and in jumping terms you would have to say Big Buck's is the long distance hurdling Frankel - which he is, make no mistake about it.

"Restless Harry is probably a bit unfortunate to be around at the same time as Big Buck's but he has been placed in races behind him. Big Buck's doesn't get the credit he deserves. I have been racing 42 years now and I have never ever witnessed anything like it - he is just incredible.

"Our horse tipped up on his final start last season at Aintree but he schooled over hurdles and fences since then and there is no way that has put him off.

"He is as fit as a flea and I was astonished by the way he won last year. If he repeats that performance, by God they have all got to go some to beat him, even under a penalty.

"We will also look to explore the chasing route with him again this season. I disagree with the critics - I think he jumped very well in both his starts last season and the horse that beat him at Chepstow, Teaforthree, won the four miler at Cheltenham and is obviously a very smart horse.

"I don't think anyone can look at the form book and say he has run badly over fences because he has not."

Other notable entries in the Grade Two contest include Alan King's World Hurdle third Smad Place, Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Grand National meeting handicap scorer Cape Tribulation and Tom George's Liverpool Hurdle runner-up Crack Away Jack.

Also among the entries is last year's runner-up Fair Along and last season's Bet365 Gold Cup winner Tidal Bay, trained by Paul Nicholls.

An exciting seven-race card at Wetherby on bet365 Charlie Hall Chase Day begins at 12.35pm and is headlined by the £100,000 Grade Two bet365 Charlie Hall Chase (3.25pm).

A total of 14 entries include last year's comfortable winner Weird Al, trained by Donald McCain, Grade Two John Smith's Mildmay Novices' Chase scorer Silviniaco Conti and Cheltenham Gold Cup fifth Time For Rupert.

Other possible starters include Mouse Morris' RSA Chase runner-up First Lieutenant and the Neil Mulholland-trained Grade Two Argento Chase hero Midnight Chase.

Run over three miles and a furlong, the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase has been won by some top-class staying chasers including Wayward Lad (1983 & 1985), Burrough Hill Lad (1984), Forgive 'n Forget (1986), Barton Bank (1993 & 1995), One Man (1996 & 1997), See More Business (1999 & 2000) and Our Vic (2006).

The two-day bet365 Charlie Hall Meeting gets underway with a six-race card on Friday, November 2, headlined by the £23,500 Listed bet365 Handicap Chase (2.00pm, 26 entries) over an extended two and a half miles and the £15,000 Listed Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle (2.35pm, 13 entries) over an extended two miles. The first race is due off at 1.00pm.

GOING

The going at Wetherby remains: Good to Soft (7.0)

Wetherby's Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course, Jonjo Sanderson, reported today: "The going remains Good to Soft, with a GoingStick reading of 7.0.

"We have had just 0.5mm in the last 24 hours; however, there is still a band of rain expected during the night tonight, heavy at times, which will clear in the morning, leaving us with a dry run through to the end of racing on Saturday.

"In terms of quantity, the forecasters are telling me to expect up to 10mm, which the ground would easily take."

BREEDERS' CUP LOOKS SURE TO SHAKE UP CARTIER STANDINGS

The 29th Breeders' Cup takes place this Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3, at Santa Anita Park, USA, and, with a strong European-trained contingent over the two days, there could well be significant changes in the points standings for the 2012 Cartier Racing Awards.

Frankel may well have the Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier Older Horse Awards in the bag but a strong showing from either Moonlight Cloud or Excelebration in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Mile could well have an impact on the final standings in both categories. Good performances from St Nicholas Abbey, Treasure Beach or Shareta in the Breeders' Cup Turf could also change the order in the Cartier Older Horse category.

The Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award looks settled with none of the leading contenders lining up at the Breeders' Cup, but it is very different in the race for the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly Award with the current category leader, The Fugue, set to contest Friday's Grade One Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on . The John Gosden-trained filly is set to be joined by fellow three-year-olds Up, trained by Aidan O'Brien, and Ridasiyna, who hails from the French yard of Mikel Delzangles in the 10-furlong contest.

Fame And Glory took the Cartier Stayer Award in 2011 and although he has failed to shine on the track this year, he has a chance of redemption in the Breeders' Cup Marathon on Friday. Similarly Starspangledbanner, who scooped the 2010 Cartier Sprinter Award, has not shown his old sparkle since going back into training with Aidan O'Brien but has one final chance in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Saturday.

Some good performance from two-year-olds on Friday and Saturday  could shake up the standing in the race for the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt and Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly categories. For the fillies Ceiling Kitty (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint) plus Sky Lantern, Flotilla, Waterway Run and The Gold Cheongsam (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf) go to post, while the colts are represented by Artigiano, George Vancouver, Fantastic Moon and Lines Of Battle (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf).

In addition to the Breeders' Cup, the Emirates Melbourne Cup place at Flemington, Australia, on Tuesday, November 6. There are currently 13 European-trained contenders still engaged in "the race that stops a nation" headed by the previous two winners Americain and Dunaden, who are both based in France and last year's runner-up Red Cadeaux, who is trained by Ed Dunlop.

The Cartier Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing. They are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2012, combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

In addition to eight equine awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

European horseracing's equivalent of the Oscars will be presented during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience at London's Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday, November 13.
