The going at Cheltenham
Racecourse has changed to Good to Soft, Good in places at
4pm this afternoon, from Good to Soft.
Simon
Claisse, Regional Director of Racing, South West & Clerk of the Course,
Cheltenham, said today: "We have had very little cold weather during the
winter and that has helped the grass growth.
"Although
it has been dry here for eight or nine days, we had so much rain up to then
that the course has held on to the moisture pretty well.
"It
looks like the week ahead is going to be nice and warm and dry which is
fantastic for everybody.
"I
have described the going as Good to Soft, Good in places on both chase
and hurdle tracks. With the sun coming out this afternoon, the ground down the
hill on the Old Course is now good.
"The
Cross Country Course, which we are going to use on Wednesday this year, is a
little bit easier (Good to Soft, Soft in places). There is some soft ground
around the top turn where they start.
"90
per cent of the ground which will be used over the four days of The Festival
has not been raced over for 12 months, which means it should take the racing
really well.
"This
place can dry out fairly quickly. In 2007, we went from heavy the weekend
before to a Gold Cup run on good ground. We are going to take things day by day
- there is a possibility that the ground will get a bit quick towards the end
of the week - it depends on the breeze and what the temperatures get up
to."
