Culloty hoping return to Cheltenham will see Windermere make waves as 17 chase glory in richest-ever Gold Cup

3.20pm £574,760 Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade One) 3m 2½f
March 8, 2014 - The final pieces of the jigsaw ahead of The Festival fall into place today with the unveiling of the six-day acceptors for the fourth and final day of the meeting, Gold Cup Day, Friday, March 14.

A total of 17 contenders are chasing glory in the Grade One Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup (3.20pm), which now has a record total prize fund of £574,760 following Willie Mullins' decision to supplement On His Own (25/1 with Betfred) for the extended three and a quarter mile contest. On His Own, a 10-year-old owned by Andrea and Graham Wylie, was successful last time out in the Grade Two Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on February 27.

Heading the acceptors is defending champion Bobs Worth (7/4, Nicky Henderson), who scored by seven lengths last season and is undefeated in five outings at Cheltenham, including three victories at The Festival. His trainer Nicky Henderson could also be represented by Hennessy Gold Cup scorer Triolo D'Alene (14/1).

Paul Nicholls is the most successful current handler in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup with four wins to his name and this year the Ditcheat trainer is set to be represented by Silviniaco Conti (3/1) who fell three fences from home in 2013 when still travelling sweetly. The eight-year-old has enhanced his reputation this season with victory in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

There have been 21 Irish-trained winners of the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, most recently War Of Attrition in 2006, and six Irish-trained contenders go forward. In addition to On His Own, Ireland's contingent contains Last Instalment (6/1, Philip Fenton) who captured the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup last time out at Leopardstown.

It is 10 years since Best Mate gained his third Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup and Jim Culloty, the man who rode the great horse to each of the three victories, is hoping for glory as a trainer in chasing's Blue Riband this year with Lord Windermere (33/1).

The eight-year-old, who is races in the colours of Dr Ronan Lambe, is no stranger to success at The Festival having been successful in the Grade One RSA Chase a year ago, when he proved a length and three-quarters too strong forLyreen Legend (40/1, Dessie Hughes).

So far this season things have not fallen into place for Lord Windermere - he was eighth behind Triolo D'Alene at Newbury, seventh behind Bobs Worth in the Lexus Chase and sixth to Last Instalment last time out in the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup on February 9. However, Culloty is hopeful a return to Cheltenham will re-ignite his charge.

Culloty, who trains in Churchtown, County Cork, said today: "I am happy with Lord Windermere and he likes Cheltenham.

"I wish I was going to Cheltenham with a better run under his belt but for various reasons things have just not gone right for him this season.

"There is nothing wrong with him and he is going to Cheltenham in good old form. He likes Cheltenham and we will see how we get on. The perfect ground for him would be what he encountered last year, which is the easy side of good. It might be a bit faster than ideal for him next week but as long as it is not proper quick he will be running."

When reminded of the fact that is the 10th anniversary of Best Mate's third victory, Culloty replied: "It feels like yesterday! Where do the years go?"

The Irish-trained entries also include First Lieutenant (6/1, Mouse Morris), who has finished runner-up at the last two Festivals, and Bog Warrior (66/1, Tony Martin).

Other hopefuls include The Giant Bolster (16/1, David Bridgwater) who has been placed in the last two renewals, the 2011 Racing Post Arkle Chase victor Captain Chris (14/1, Philip Hobbs) and Harry Topper (25/1, Kim Bailey) who showed his liking for Cheltenham when taking the Grade Two Argento Chase at Cheltenham on Festival Trials Day, January 25.

Betfred spokesman Andrew Griffiths said:  "This year's Betfred Gold Cup is shaping up into an absolute cracker.

"Bobs Worth is a strong favourite and we expect to see plenty more support for the reigning champion as the ground continues to dry at Cheltenham."

Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup - sponsors bet: 7/4 Bobs Worth, 3 Silviniaco Conti, 6 Last Instalment, 12 First Lieutenant, 14 Captain Chris, Triolo d'Alene, 16 The Giant Bolster, 25 Harry Topper, On His Own, 33 Lord Windermere, 40 Lyreen Legend, 50 Katenko, Knockara Beau, Teaforthree, 66 Bog Warrior, Cloudy Too, 100 Houblon Des Obeaux.
 ¼ 1-2-3. NON-RUNNER NO-BET

1.30pm £120,000 JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade One), 2m 1f

Gold Cup Day opens with the JCB Triumph Hurdle, for which 26 contenders go forward.

Currently vying for favouritism are Calipto (Paul Nicholls), who has been hugely impressive in winning both his starts in Britain and Le Rocher (Nick Williams) who has landed a Grade One contest at Chepstow and a Grade Two event at Cheltenham already this season.

2.05pm £80,000 Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle (Grade One), 2m 1f

A bumper 81 contenders remain in the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle, which is always one of the most fiercely-contested races at The Festival.

Captain Cee Bee (Eddie Harty) heads the weights on 11st 12lb but is more likely to contest Tuesday's Stan James Hurdle, for which he was a supplemented on Wednesday.

2.40pm £120,000 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (Grade One), 3m

The fourth of the Grade One novices' hurdles at The Festival, the three-mile Albert Bartett Novices' Hurdle has 33 six-day confirmations.

The hot-favourite is Briar Hill (Willie Mullins), who was successful at The Festival last year in the Grade One Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

4.00pm £40,000 CGA Foxhunter Chase, 3m 2½f

The "amateurs' Gold Cup" has 28 contenders remaining, including the J P McManus-owned On The Fringe (Enda Bolger), who heads the market. The nine-year-old was fourth in the 2011 renewal. His main opponent could beTammys Hill (Liam Lennon), who got the better of him in a close finish at Leopardstown last time out, while Oscar Delta (Jimmy Mangan) could bid for justice having agonisingly unseated his rider Jane Mangan on the run-in last year. Harbour Court (Alan Hill) looks the best of the British-trained contenders.

4.40pm £50,000 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, 2m 4½f

A massive 112 contenders go forward in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, including 10 trained by David Pipe.

5.15pm £90,000 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase, 2m ½f

Trainer Nicky Henderson is responsible for five of the remaining 53 entries in the concluding Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase including top weight Kid Cassidy.

Vying for favouritism are Ted Veale (Tony Martin) and Next Sensation (Michael Scudamore).
