Sunday`s six race card on the Abu Dhabi turf is highlighted by a valuable 2200m handicap for which 14 have been declared, including four for trainer Ernst Oertel who saddled his 21st winner of the season when Capital Attraction won in the Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan on Thursday.
Oertel, who trains mostly Purebred Arabians for HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has 10 runners throughout the card and with stable jockey Tadhg O`Shea suspended, Sam Hitchcott appears to have picked up the best of the spare rides. He rides Swyft in the feature and the pair were third over course and distance last time in a race won by the re-opposing Ibn Battuta Monlau.
Frysk Me Now (Pat Cosgrave), Jazeerat Alsadyaat (Adrian Nicholls) and Manisha (Royston Ffrench) complete the Oertel quartet.
“We have made a great start to the season and it was brilliant to get a winner at Meydan on Thursday. We have plenty of chances on Sunday and Swyft looks our best chance in the feature as he stays so well," he said. “It looks a strong race though and he will need to be at his best.”
The aforementioned Ibn Battuta Monlau is trained on the track by locally-based Eric Lemartinel and will be ridden by Wayne Smith who said: “I was not on him last time but he won well and it is a nice spare ride in what looks a stronger race.”
Gerald Avranche was on Smith`s mount for that victory but switches to stable companion Raked who takes a massive drop in class having contested the Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round I at Meydan on his most recent start. He has to give weight to his 13 rivals headed by local debutant Elraawy. Winner of three of his nine starts in Europe, he is trained by Gill Duffield and is the choice of Paul Hanagan from two runners owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The second, Takaamul, also trained by Duffield, is a course and distance winner and will be partnered by the owner’s second jockey, Dane O`Neill.
The only Thoroughbred race on the card is the concluding event, a 1600m maiden and again the maximum field of 14 will face the starter. Satish Seemar has four declared, of which stable jockey Richard Mullen has chosen to ride Baransky who will be seeking to lose his maiden at the eleventh time of asking. He has been running well in defeat recently though and should appreciate the return to turf.
Musabah Al Muhairi has his string in great form and he too is set to saddle four with stable jockey Wayne Smith not surprisingly on Ramonti Flash, sixth in a decent contest at Meydan on his sole previous start. Only a three-year-old, he is open to any amount of improvement and gets weight from his opponents who are all older.
Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe has three in the race with Latkhaf, runner-up on all three of his starts this season, looking to hold leading claims under Silvestre De Sousa.
