British Champion Richard Hughes @hughesiejockey to ride in LONGINES International Jockeys' Championship as Joao Moreira is suspended

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today announced that Richard Hughes will ride in the LONGINES International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley Racecourse on 4 December 2013. Hughes steps in as replacement for Joao Moreira, who incurred a three meeting suspension for careless riding aboard Turbo Jewellery in The Victoria Racing Club Trophy at Happy Valley on 13 November. The suspension is added to that incurred for a previous offence, and the period of suspension now includes the LONGINES IJC on 4 December and the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races on 8 December.

Mr William A Nader, Executive Director of Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club said: "This is unfortunate news for Joao Moreira, but we are delighted to have a jockey of the highest quality to take his place. Richard Hughes has won the UK Jockeys' Championship for the past two years, riding more than 200 winners in 2013 to successfully defend his title. I know that Richard is excited to have the opportunity to take part in the LONGINES International Jockeys' Championship and we are equally excited to welcome him to the all-star lineup."

Richard Hughes is making his IJC debut at the end of a stellar year that has seen him collect nine G1 wins in addition to his second Champion Jockey title. After notching the first British classic of his career atop Sky Lantern in the English 1,000 Guineas, he added a second just one month later in the Oaks at Epsom thanks to Talent. After top-flight mile wins on Toronado and Olympic Glory, he recently guided Chriselliam to success in the G1 BreedersCup Juvenile Fillies'Turf to take his career G1 haul to 38.
