bet365 Lennox Stakes takes centre stage on opening day of Glorious Goodwood

Recent Ascot Group Two winner Aljamaaheer and QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Glory Awaits feature among 16 six-day confirmations for the Group Two bet365 Lennox Stakes (3.05pm), highlight of the opening day of Glorious Goodwood, Tuesday, July 30.

The seven-furlong contest, which closed early rather than at the six-day stage for the first time this year, has a prize fund of £150,000, a £10,000 increase on 2012.

goodwoodKrypton Factor, trained in Newmarket by Bahrain-based handler Fawzi Nass, could step up in distance following a string of superb runs over shorter distances. The five-year-old was a decisive winner of the Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2011 and was third in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Fencing may make his first appearance since coming home sixth in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May while Tawhid, Garswood and Music Master could all re-oppose after finishing third, fourth and fifth respectively in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Caspar Netscher is due to have his first start for David Simcock after proving to be sub-fertile as a stallion. The four-year-old was third in the Audi Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in 2011 before going on post three Group Two victories for trainer Alan McCabe, including a decisive win in the German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne in May, 2012.

Simcock commented: "Caspar Netscher is set to run at Goodwood. He has settled in well and I couldn't be happier with him.

"He has proven very straightforward but we haven't rushed him. He was a horse who was let down to become a stallion and the likelihood is that he will improve for the run.

"The Lennox Stakes seems a nice starting point for him. It looks like being a competitive race and I am looking forward to running him."

Marcus Tregoning has earmarked the race for Boom And Bust, who captured the Betfred Mile at Goodwood in 2011 and was fourth in the same race last year. Hayley Turner, Goodwood's racing ambassador this year, is set to take the ride.

Richard Hannon has three entries - last year's runner-up Libranno, dual Listed scorer Professor and the 2012 Supreme Stakes winner Producer, who comfortably beat Red Jazz and Pastoral Player in a Newmarket Group Three on his latest start.

Wokingham Handicap sixth Rex Imperator and Goodwood Group winner Monsieur Chevalier complete those going forward.

The opening day of Glorious Goodwood also includes the £50,000 Group Three bet365 Molecomb Stakes (2.30pm) over five furlongs, which has attracted 15 two-year-olds. Weatherbys Super Sprint runner-up Lilbourne Lass and Coventry Stakes fourth Thunder Strike are among six Richard Hannon-trained contenders, while Windsor Castle Stakes runner-up Supplicant could represent Richard Fahey.

Racing starts with the £50,000 bet365 Handicap (1.55pm) over just shy of 10 furlongs, which has attracted 39 entries including a pair of Royal Ascot winners - Forgotten Voice, successful in this year's Wolferton Handicap, and Fast Or Free, who took the Britannia Handicap in 2012.

Recent Ascot scorer Silver Lime and course and distance winner Duke Of Clarence are among 46 entries for the 14-furlong £75,000 bet365 Summer Handicap (3.40pm), along with proven Group performers Camborne and Harris Tweed plus the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Between Us.

A seven-race card is completed by the £20,000 Casino At bet365 EBF Maiden (4.15pm, 31 entries) over six furlongs, the mile £15,000 Poker At bet365 Handicap (4.50pm, 51 entries) and the five-furlong £15,000 Mobile At bet365 Handicap (5.25pm, 30 entries).

The going at Goodwood remains Good, Good to Firm in Places on the straight and
Good to Firm, Good in Places on the round course.

Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley said: "We have been dry since 11.00am yesterday and I am very happy with the condition of the course.

"There is some rain expected in the area early tomorrow morning, but we don't know how much or whether it will reach us. We are continuing to water to maintain the current conditions.

"Glorious Goodwood is a long week and it is the aim to start the meeting on goodish ground."
