Captain Bertie could have his first start for Newmarket trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam in the £130,000 Betfred Mile on day four of Glorious Goodwood, Friday, August 2.
The five-year-old, formerly with Lambourn handler Charlie Hills, changed hands for 50,000 guineas at the Tattersalls July Sale last week and is among 66 confirmations for Goodwood's richest handicap, details of which are revealed today.
He finished down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot on his final start for Hills in June, but had previously captured a valuable mile handicap at Chester in May.
Chapple-Hyam said: "Captain Bertie has settled in fantastically well. He has not left an oat, so I am very pleased. If we have some rain, he will be running in the Betfred Mile.
"I was very keen to get him at the sales. He has a good physique, his form, particularly with give in the ground, is very good and he seems to have a good attitude and temperament.
"I think there is a big race in him but he definitely wants some give in the ground to be seen at his best."
Captain Bertie, who has 8st 13lb in the Betfred Mile, is a 25/1 chance with sponsor Betfred. The maximum number of runners allowed is 20 and Captain Bertie is 28th in the list of weights at the moment.
The weights are topped by Marcus Tregoning's 2011 Betfred Mile hero Boom And Bust (16/1), who also has the option of running in the bet365 Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood, Tuesday, July 30.
Betfred makes the Andrew Balding-trained Stirring Ballad, a winner at Glorious Goodwood last year, its 7/1 joint market leader along with lightly-raced three-year-oldWentworth, trained by Goodwood's leading handler Richard Hannon. Other notable contenders include Royal Hunt Cup victor Belgian Bill (12/1) and recent Bunbury Cup scorer Field Of Dream (10/1).
