Dawn Approach versus Toronado clash in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood

A new Duel on the Downs in prospect as connections announce

Dawn Approach has already beaten Toronado twice this season and is now set to take on his rival for a third time in the Group One QIPCO Sussex Stakes on the second day of  Glorious Goodwood, Wednesday, July 31.
goodwood
There was only a short-head between the two last time in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and both camps are talking about victory at Glorious Goodwood.

Two years ago the clash between Frankel and Canford Cliffs was marketed as the "Duel on the Downs" and this year's QIPCO Sussex Stakes is now being branded the same.

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, said: "Jim (Bolger - trainer) is in the driving seat and knows Dawn Approach incredibly well.

"He is keen to go for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes and the horse is very, very well.

"This clash with Toronado very much reminds me of King's Lake versus To-Agori-Mou in the 1981 Sussex Stakes.

"We expect summer ground, which is going to be quite quick. Dawn Approach has handled that surface very well.

"It is going to be a fantastic race and the highlight of Glorious Goodwood. I think both camps believe they have the better horse.

"Dawn Approach needs to beat Toronado fairly and squarely again over the Sussex Downs to establish himself as the true three-year-old champion over this distance and then head on to Deauville for the Prix Jacques Le Marois to take on Intello.

"Toronado could warm us up a bit in the Sussex Stakes but I don't think he will beat us. Dawn Approach has beaten Toronado twice and hopefully he can do so again.

"Dawn Approach is very courageous and has the perfect attitude for a miler. Jim is keen to run the horse at Goodwood in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes and then go on to the Jacques le Marois at Deauville 10 days later.

"The three big mile races in Europe now are the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, the Jacques le Marois and then the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. When we reach that race, we will talk about the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita."

Jim Bolger, Dawn Approach's trainer, added: "The races Dawn Approach has had this season did not take very much out of him because he was bucking and squealing two days after each one."

Asked is there will be a pacemaker in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, the trainer replied: "Leitir Mor seems to go for the same races as Dawn Approach and he likes a bit of daylight so he won't be too far away (from the front) I expect.

"I saw the St James's Palace Stakes a couple of time afterwards and I was more interested in what happened to my own horse rather than any other horse. I know we got a good smack from the inside which knocked him sideways for a couple of strides but he recovered quickly. He was very dour in the finish and he always would be if he has to be.

"I respect all the runners who race against Dawn Approach - I enjoy competing in those Group One races and so if that is rivalry I am definitely enjoying it.

"I am not really concerned about the course at Goodwood. I prefer a level track but it is the same for everybody."

Richard Hannon junior, whose father trains Toronado, said: "I thought we came there to beat Dawn Approach but to his credit he stayed on and beat us. I'm not saying we'll beat Dawn Approach but we are fully entitled to go to Goodwood and take him on again. We were unlucky in the race at Ascot. I thought we came there to beat Dawn Approach but to his credit stayed on and beat us - he's a hard horse to go past. We were unlucky earlier in the race but maybe at the line we weren't. Our horse is a very good horse and we are going to take on Dawn Approach again. It is going to be an awesome race at Goodwood if there is same distance between them - a bit closer than Frankel and Canford Cliffs.

"He didn't run his race in the Guineas when he didn't finish as he can. He definitely put that to bed at Ascot, his breathing was right and he is much more relaxed. He's going very well now and is very relaxed in his work. Hughesie (Richard Hughes) came in to ride him this morning and, watering down what he said, thought the horse would run really well in the Sussex Stakes. We're very pleased with Toronado and hope he runs a massive race.

"We'll leave the riding plans to Hughesie - Goodwood can be a difficult course and things can go spectacularly wrong at times. We will ride him a bit differently - closer to the speed. He won't be ridden just to beat Dawn Approach, there will probably be eight or nine others in there to negotiate.

"Havana Gold has come out of his race in France well and there's a chance he might show up in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes."

The Wiltshire stable look to be well represented over the five days of Glorious Goodwood (Tuesday, July 30 to Saturday, August 3) and Hannon junior added: "Sky Lantern could got to the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes (Saturday, August 3). At the moment we are going to appeal the stewards' decision from Newmarket (when she finished second in Friday's Falmouth Stakes).

"She settles well, you saw that in the Falmouth, and is easy to manoeuvre in a race so I can't see why she won't get a mile and a quarter. We're keen to go to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at the end of the season.

"Producer is in good form and likes the track, as does Libranno, and both of them will probably go for the Lennox (Tuesday, July 30).

"We've got some nice two-year-olds. We deliberately missed the July Stakes withThunder Strike, who was fourth in the Coventry, so that he could go for the Richmond Stakes. Toormore is likely to go for the Vintage Stakes and Brown Sugar for the Molecomb.

"War Spirit is another two-year-old we like. He's by Exceed And Excel and is unusual because he has one grey leg."

Sajjhaa Goes For The Group One Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes.

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, commented: "I think when Sajjhaawon two Group Ones at Meydan we were surprised because she had achieved an enormous amount in Group Threes and Listed level. To reach Group One level needed a step up in form. She raced in a hood in Dubai and I think that has turned her around. She is now very effective in her races.

"A mile and a quarter is stretching her but she will be going for the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes. Her best trip is at a mile or nine furlongs.

"Sajjhaa was running against a small pool of horses in Dubai and, now she is back in Europe, there is a much bigger tank of fish to be running against. But she is quality and she is peaking at the right moment."

Artemis Gold Cup At Glorious Goodwood

Crisford said: "We have four possibles for the Artemis Goodwood Cup but it is stretching it a little bit to think all of them will run.

"Colour Vision will definitely go for the race. A visor for the first time at Royal Ascot seemed to definitely do the trick and he ran really, really well (in fourth).

"He is probably not quite as good as when he won at Royal Ascot last year when he had a hard race which might have left a mark on him mentally.

"He ran well against some top stayers afterwards under a Group One penalty during the rest of the 2012 campaign but when he was working this spring for his comeback in the Henry II Stakes he was looking lethargic and ran badly.

"So we put a pair of visors on and they woke him up. I think Goodwood will suit him and we look forward to him running to his Royal Ascot form.

"Ahzeemah ran a really good race in the Princess Of Wales's Stakes (second) at Newmarket last week and could go for the Goodwood Cup. He has the Emirates Melbourne Cup as a long-term target but to get into that race nowadays you need to be 115+ and he is just falling short of that level at the moment.

"Lost In The Moment never normally wins. He did so the other day because he got into trouble and managed to get himself out. But he does like Goodwood which can suit quirky horses. He is in the mix.

"Cavalryman is running as well as he can but you would have to be a bit surprised if he could figure in the Goodwood Cup finish."

Godolphin Two-Year-Olds

Crisford concluded: "Outstrip is a good horse and we will aim him at the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (Wednesday, July 31).

"Figure Of Speech ran a smashing race in the July Stakes (second) last week and I think he was the best horse in the race. If he had kept a straight line, he would have won and we will go for the Audi Richmond Stakes (Thursday, August 1).

"I would say that he is our strongest chance of the week apart from Dawn Approach."

Qatar Bloodstock could also be send a strong team to Glorious Goodwood and the owner's spokesman, John Maxse, commented: "I think Charlie (Hills) is keen to go to the Nassau with Just The Judge. He wants to step her up to a mile and a quarter, which should suit her as she settles and she is out of a Rainbow Quest mare. By the sounds of it, we are going to have a rematch with Sky Lantern at Goodwood. But Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing love a challenge so the fact we have been beaten by Sky Lantern twice won't deter them.

"Trade Storm will run in the Sussex Stakes. He travelled very well in the Summer Mile at the weekend and they hope he will have come on for that. He is a horse who is best held up so if they went a good gallop it would suit him.

"Green Door could also go to Goodwood and Olly Stevens is likely to runGamesome, a nice Rock Of Gibraltar colt, in a maiden."

Goodwood's racing ambassador is jockey Hayley Turner and she is looking forward to partnering the Marcus Tregoning-trained Boom And Bust in the bet365 Lennox Stakes.

"The horse deserves to take his chance in a race like that, even though he is stepping back in trip," said Turner. "He loves Goodwood and the horse should be peaking for the Lennox. I rode him at home the other day and he is going well."

Adam Waterworth, managing director of Goodwood Racecourse, said: "Everything is going  well ahead of Glorious Goodwood.

"We had a really good year in 2012 in spite of fears about an Olympic impact and our ticket sales are ahead this year.

"I am not expecting the Wednesday to be as strong this year because Frankel was such a huge draw in 2012. We may be slightly down that day though we have a new "Duel on the Downs" this year with Dawn Approach taking on Toronado for the third time in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes.

"There are few changes to the race programme this year. This year Neptune Investment Management is supporting the Gordon Stakes, among a number of races leading up to the Ladbrokes St Leger, and the race has moved from the opening days (Tuesday) to the Wednesday to provide great support for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes.

"In its place on the Tuesday, we have put the race won by Motivado last year, which often provides the Ebor favourite - the 14-furlong handicap now called the bet365 Summer Handicap and worth £75,000. We are keen to build this into the focus handicap on the Tuesday. There is now a mile and half race on the Saturday.

"Hospitality sales and sponsorship are probably stronger than they have ever been this year which is a fantastic position to be in. We are very lucky that Glorious Goodwood happens to be a lot of people's favourite week of the year. We never take this for granted."

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood's clerk of the course, commented: "We've been dry for three weeks now and I'm probably the only person in Sussex who would welcome some rain. Our watering campaign began last Monday and is going well. I am where I would want to be with the course at this stage.

"We have no rain forecast until the Thursday before Glorious Goodwood and I would anticipate the meeting will begin with ground on the easy side of good to firm. We are watering through the night, which helps retain moisture, rather than in daytime when the water just evaporates."

Godolphin
Background: Godolphin is the racing entity of Sheikh Mohammed and other members of the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai. Its aim is to win races worldwide. Godolphin horses often benefit from Dubai's warm winter climate. The experiment began on a small scale in the winter of 1992. The Godolphin operation was formally established in 1994, with Hilal Ibrahim as trainer, when Balanchine won the Investec Oaks and Irish Derby. The following year, Saeed bin Suroor was appointed as the official trainer. Trainers: Godolphin's British-based horses are handled by Saeed bin Suroor. Andre Fabre trains for Godolphin in France, while the US runners are overseen by Kiaran McLaughlin, Tom Albertrani and Eoin Harty. Mahmood Al Zarooni, who previously trained for Godolphin at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, was banned for eight years by the BHA in April, 2013. He was Prince Khalid Abdullah's retained jockey from 2001 to the end of 2007. He is stable jockey for Richard Hannon, to whose daughter Lizzie he is married (they have two children, Harvey & Phoebe). The 5ft 9in Hughes has, like his father, also ridden winners over jumps but concentrates on the Flat. HAYLEY TURNER
Goodwood's Racing Ambassador 2013

Born: January 3, 1983, Nottingham Background: The most successful female jockey ever in Britain. Turner was taught to ride by her mother, a riding instructor. She started riding out for trainer Mark Polglase, who supplied her first winner, Generate, at Pontefract on June 4, 2000. She also attended the Northern Racing College, and then was apprenticed to Michael Bell in Newmarket. She became only the fourth woman in Britain to ride out her claim, following Emma O'Gorman, Alex Greaves and Lisa Jones. Turner was forced to miss four months of the 2009 Flat season after an incident on the Newmarket gallops that March, when catapulted from the horse she was riding and knocked unconscious. Turner's injuries - bruising to the brain - were originally considered serious enough that her licence was suspended for a year. However, following an appeal hearing at the BHA in July, she was declared fit to resume race riding and was back in action at Ascot the following day. Accolades:Turner was joint champion UK apprentice in 2005 (sharing the title with Saleem Golam with 44 wins). Her success during the 2005 season led to Turner being awarded a Lester for apprentice jockey of the year, the first woman ever to land the award. She is only the second woman to have ridden a Group One winner in Britain (2011 Darley July Cup on Dream Ahead at Newmarket) and the first to win one outright as Alex Greaves' success came when her mount Ya Malak dead-heated with Coastal Bluff for the 1997 Nunthorpe Stakes. Turner went on to win a second British Group One in the 2011 Nunthorpe Stakes on Margot Did and enjoyed Grade One success in America aboard I'm A Dreamer in the 2012 Beverly D Stakes. Became only the second female rider to take part in the Investec Derby when finishing ninth on Cavaleiro in 2012. She became the first female jockey to partner 100 winners in a calendar year (2008) in Britain. Won the Sportswoman of the Year Award, picked by Glamour magazine Big-Race Wins: Darley July Cup (2011 Dream Ahead), Nunthorpe Stakes (2011 Margot Did), Beverly D Stakes (2012 I'm A Dreamer)

Turner rode her first winner at Goodwood on Aunt Nicola on June 20, 2008 and has enjoyed 10 successes at the course, including three so far in 2013.
