CHANNON HAPPY AS HARLEY GAINS ROYAL ASCOT FIRST

royalascot2013

Elidor, ridden by Martin Harley who was having his first Royal Ascot success, won a very competitive 12-furlong King George V Handicap for trainer Mick Channon.

Channon reflected on an amazing day at Royal Ascot:  "Racing has a knack of throwing up great stories - Lady Cecil winning with Riposte and then The Queen with Estimate.

"It is a hard place to get in this winner's enclosure and I am glad to be here."

Channon said of the three-year-old Cape Cross colt who was winning for the first time in seven starts: "Elidor had the form in the book - we have waited a long time since he came second in the Lingfield Derby trial.

"I thought we might have gone up retrospectively when the horse we were third to at Pontefract, Libertarian, won the Dante and finished second in the Derby. Luckily, the handicapper did not put him up.

"Elidor has been a smashing horse and was very unlucky not to win at Doncaster two starts ago and the horse that beat him came a decent third in the Ormonde Stakes.

"This horse is a stayer, he will get better the further he goes and needs two miles now. We will see what the handicapper does and take it from there. He is a nice horse."

Harley declared: "It is a fantastic feeling to win at Royal Ascot - I will never forget my first one at this meeting - the first is always the best.

"It was quite a rough race from half-way but he picked up really good a furlong and a half out."
