Sky
Lantern's fabulous victory in the Coronation Stakes made the headlines in most
of the papers today.
Bev
Swingell, Computerman of the Daily Express, kicks off with a headline
stating "It's Sky High for Hannon" before stating "Richard
Hughes and Richard Hannon finally put one in the net after Sky Lantern
triumphed in the Coronation Stakes." Swingell goes on to tip Sky Lantern's
half-brother Shropshire in today's Wokingham Handicap.
Claude
Duval, The Sun's Punter's Pal, leads with "Lantern A Leading
Light" before highlighting the fact that trainer Hannon chose to stay at
home.
Chris
McGrath of The Independent also highlights the relief felt by Hannon and
Hughes in an article headlined "Lantern Shines For Hughes To Dispel Doubts
And Frustrations" while The Daily Telegraph's headline is "Sky
Lantern Shines In Coronation". The Times leads with "Hughes
Proves Well Up To Par As Sky Lantern Banishes Gloom".
Chris
Goulding of the Daily Star leads with "It's Magic Lantern"
while the papers' tipster, Mark 'Couch' Winstanley, admits that he "will
be gutted and Polo mint" if his nap of the meeting, Mount Athos, is beaten
today.
The Daily
Mail's Captain Heath, Marcus Townend, leads with "Hannon Joy As
Lantern Lights Up" while The Guardian's subs opt for "Lantern
Lights The Way Home For Hughes" as a headline.
In
Hughes' Racing Post column he admits that the success came as a great
relief. "Suddenly everything is all right," says Hughes. "After
a week when it felt as though luck had completely deserted me I needed
something good to happen and yesterday Sky Lantern was very good indeed".
Daily
Mail colour sports writer Alan Fraser pens a column under the headline
"Now It's Down To Frankie To Get Everyone Jumping". Fraser states
that "the only thing missing from this most regal and emotional of Royal
Ascots is a Frankie Dettori flying dismount". Dettori's best chance on paper
comes in the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes when he partners French raider
Shahwardi.
"Sky
High" is the Mirror's headline with David Yates, Newsboy,
highlighting the fact that Sky Lantern could head towards the Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphe. Trainer Andrew Balding, a Mirror columnist, revealed that his biggest
thrill this week was meeting Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons ahead of
their appearance at next weekend's Glastonbury Festival.
The Daily
Star featured some of the many celebrities at Ascot yesterday including
England footballer Glen Johnson and Lisa Scott-Lee of Steps while the Daily
Mail included a picture of Andy Murray's girlfriend Kim Sears.
