The Daily Telegraph's
'editor at large' Jeff Randall, who also presents the hit business and politics
show Jeff Randall Live on Sky News, could be making the headlines of his own
with leading Betfred Cesarewitch fancy Albert Bridge.
The progressive
four-year-old is among 55 five-day confirmations for the historic two and a
quarter-mile £160,000 heritage handicap at Newmarket on Dubai Future Champions
Day, Saturday, October 13.
Trained by Ralph
Beckett, Albert Bridge completed his preparation for the Betfred Cesarewitch
with a gutsy half-length victory in a competitive 13-furlong handicap at Ayr on
heavy going on September 22.
Randall, a member of the
Cheyne Walkers syndicate which owns Albert Bridge, said: "We plan to run
Albert Bridge in the Betfred Cesarewitch providing the ground doesn't dry up
too much.
"The going at
Newmarket was soft on Saturday but Newmarket is one of the best draining
courses in the country and there is no rain forecast for the next couple of
days so we will have to keep our fingers crossed. If the ground is quicker than
good, he won't run.
"We were very happy
with his win at Ayr. I thought going into the race that the long straight would
perfect for him and we knew he would handle the ground. He has been quite a
fragile horse in the past but at Ayr he confirmed he is the horse we always
thought he could be.
"Ralph (Beckett)
and the syndicate members have been very pleased with the horse since his run
at Ayr and he is in top form.
"The trip at
Newmarket is an unknown but earlier in the season he finished second at
Salisbury over a mile and three quarters and he ran all the way to the line
there.
"There aren't many
handicaps over this sort of trip where you can test their stamina but Jim
(Crowley) rode him handy at Ayr when the ground was very heavy and Albert
Bridge saw it out well.
"The Betfred
Cesarewitch is one of the most famous and enduring handicaps in the racing
calendar and I would be delighted if he could finish in the first four."
Albert Bridge is a 20/1
chance with race sponsor Betfred and has 8st 3lb, which includes a 4lb penalty
for his Ayr win.
Other leading
confirmations include last season's Grade One Triumph Hurdle hero
Countrywide Flame, who is Betfred's current favourite at 9/1, Group Two
Doncaster Cup third Hurricane Higgins (10/1) and progressive
three-year-old Montaser (10/1).
The maximum field that
can go to post for the Betfred Cesarewitch is 34.
A seven-race card at
Newmarket on Dubai Future Champions Day is headlined by two of the defining
juvenile contests of the season - the £300,000 Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes
(2.55pm) over seven furlongs and the six-furlong £150,000 Group One Vision.ae
Middle Park Stakes (2.20pm), for which 15 and 12 two-year-olds respectively go
forward.
