BAKER HAS FAITH IN MARTYR AHEAD OF BETFRED CESAREWITCH AT NEWMARKET

Trainer George Baker is looking forward to seeing Martyr return to Newmarket for the £160,000 Betfred Cesarewitch (3.30pm) on Dubai Future Champions Day, Saturday, October 13.

A total of 66 horses remain in the second leg of the Autumn Double following the latest scratchings deadline for the two and a quarter-mile heritage handicap.

Betfred
Martyr missed the whole of last season with a leg injury but made a promising debut for Baker in Doncaster's Mallard Handicap on September 14 prior to coming home fourth in the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl over two miles at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Festival on September 27.

The seven-year-old is a 14/1 chance for the Betfred Cesarewitch with the race sponsor.

Baker revealed: "I very much hope that Martyr will run in the Betfred Cesarewitch. I was thrilled with the way he ran in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl, when he was reunited with his old pal Richard Hughes.

"Richard said that the horse felt as good as before he was sidelined for two years with a tendon injury. I asked him after he got off what he was going to ride in the Betfred Cesarewitch and he said that he would be on Martyr and he would win.

"The trip of the Betfred Cesarewitch is always a bit of an unknown because you don't  get many chances to run them over the distance beforehand. The way he finished the race last Friday, when he just got a little tired rather than not staying, I would be more than hopeful of him getting two and a quarter miles."

Recent Chester handicap winner Countrywide Flame, a Grade One winner over hurdles, is Betfred's 10/1 co-favourite for the Betfred Cesarewitch along with Group Two Doncaster Cup third Hurricane Higgins and the progressive Montaser.
