DUBAI FUTURE CHAMPIONS DAY BRINGS "LOTS OF POSITIVES"

DUBAI FUTURE CHAMPIONS DAY 2012
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
NEWMARKET, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13

Newmarket Racecourses was pleased with the second Dubai Future Champions Day, which proved a success on a number of levels.

The quality of the racing was exceptional with the unbeaten Dawn Approach  producing a superb performance to win the Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. It was his sixth straight victory and he heads the betting for next year's QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

There was also a fine display from the unbeaten Reckless Abandon in the card's other Group One, the vision.ae Middle Park Stakes, while the vision.ae Rockfel Stakes saw the filly Just The Judge excel and in the Autumn Stakes Trading Leather confirmed his high potential.

There was also a great all-round atmosphere on the course and the inaugural 'Racing For Jobs' was well received as was the 'Future Champions Parade', celebrating the achievements of unsung heroes and heroines from within the community.

Another 'plus' stemmed from a crowd figure that was 9,514, 4.5 per cent up on last year's inaugural Dubai Future Champions Day.

Newmarket Racecourses' managing director Amy Starkey said: "We will take away a lot of positives from this afternoon and the team here are determined to grow Dubai Future Champions Day. We are encouraged that the attendance was up on last year's figure and we will do everything possible to try and improve on it again in 2013.

"The racing at Dubai Future Champions Day is, without a doubt, exceptional and I'm sure many of the two-year-olds racing here this afternoon will go on to become high-class at three, while there is a good chance that we may have witnessed a future Classic winner today - time will tell.

"On a personal level, I was delighted that we staged the first-ever 'Racing For Jobs' event. It fits in brilliantly with the key objectives of the day and I feel confident that it will be even better in 2013 and beyond.

"Another positive was that the restaurants were full and our hospitality boxes were sold out long in advance of this afternoon. In total, over 1,000 people enjoyed Newmarket Racecourses' hospitality packages.

"Looking to the future, we will work hard and be creative as a team in developing Dubai Future Champions Day.

"We acknowledge that there is work to be done to grow the attendance of our high-profile autumn race-days. It is a challenge but we have fantastic racing and it is up to all of us working for Newmarket Racecourses to make sure we match it by also providing a great all-round event experience.

"I would just like to place on record my thanks to Dubai for their much-valued sponsorship of Dubai Future Champions Day - and Betfred for their commitment to our historic 'Autumn Double', the Betfred Cambridgeshire and Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap."

Director of racing Michael Prosser said: "We have watched a terrific afternoon of racing on an excellent surface, reflecting a huge effort by our ground-staff.

"We were delighted with the fantastic quality of the entries for our two-year-old races and I was very pleased that the races attracted such a strong group of Irish runners, not least Europe's highest-rated two-year-old Dawn Approach..

"Lastly, a word on the Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap - it remains one of my favourite races and this year's renewal was as memorable as ever with Aaim To Prosper creating history by becoming the first dual winner of this historic contest."

FUTURE CHAMPIONS RACING ON FRESH GROUND TODAY

Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Newmarket Racecourses, reported  the going remains Good to soft for Dubai Future Champions Day after a dry night.

He said: "There was a good, heavy dew this morning and a nip of frost, just on the leaf itself, but that went fairly quickly.

"The ground walks well - it is very consistent, right from the two mile, two furlong start to the winning line. We are racing on fresh ground - the 10 furlongs of the home straight have not been raced on since the Sunday of the Guineas meeting (May 6).

"We cantered down it on September 22 and on the first day of the Cambridgeshire meeting but it has not been raced on since early May. The ground has been saved specifically for today.

"The forecast for the day is sunny spells with the possibility of showers this afternoon."

SPONSOR FEARS THE DR

Betfred fear the Dr Marwan Koukash-owned Montaser in today's Betfred Cesarewitch.

The three-year-old is trained by David Simcock and crept into the race as first reserve, following the withdrawal of Address Unknown, also owned by Koukash, yesterday. Koukash owned the 2011 Betfred Cesarewitch victor Never Can Tell.

Andrew Griffiths of Betfred said: "Dr Marwan Koukash knows what he's doing in these types of race.

"Montaser is a three-year-old who has crept in a with a featherweight. He is drawn 20 but Never Can Tell came from a similar position last year.

"The horse has been our big morning gamble and is 10/1 from 12/1.

"Another popular horse has been Bernie The Bolt, who has attracted a lot of each-way support and has been smashed into 16/1 from 33/1.

"Hurricane Higgins - who is 10lb well-in today - is 12/1 from 14/1."

Race 1 - Dubai Challenge Stakes

"HE ASTOUNDS ME"

"He astounds me", that was the reaction of winning trainer Mark Johnston following the victory of Fulbright under Joe Fanning in the Group Two Dubai Challenge Stakes over seven furlongs. He was returned at 15/2 and battled gamely in the final furlong to overhaul long-time leader Red Jazz by a neck.

The three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, who is owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, was making his 12th appearance of 2012 and winning for the first time in Group company.

Mark Johnston said: "Deirdre (his wife) said the horse was a bit on edge and sweated badly when he disappointed at Redcar last time. He got warm again today and was difficult to saddle, so I thought he had maybe had too many runs this season. As it turned out, today was his best run yet.

"I don't know if he will run again this season but I don't think he will. We will go home with him and speak to the boss.

"The horse astounds me. When the stable had a bad patch in July, he was the shining beacon for us and last time out at Redcar was the only time he has run disappointingly.

"As he has been on the go all the season, he just canters at home and doesn't show much. I doubt he has had a gallop at home since about April.

"He has been full of |pleasant surprises all the way."

Joe Fanning added: "He has done it well and has been a good little horse this year. He has had a hard year and he has won plenty of races.

"He has bounced back from Redcar and has won well - he is tough."

RED JAZZ JUST CAUGHT

Red Jazz, trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by Michael Hills, tried to make all and very nearly succeeded, only being passed by the winner Fulbright in the closing stages when beaten a neck in the Group Two Dubai Challenge Stakes at 12/1.

The trainer said: "Red Jazz has run a blinder. It was just unfortunate that he did all the hard work and was caught near the line. That is racing I suppose.

"We will see what the handicapper does with his rating and there is a possibility he could go for the Dubai Carnival early next year."

First Race: The Dubai Challenge Stakes

GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Joe Fanning, rider of the neck winner Fulbright, said: "On the easy side of good."

Michael Hills, partner of second Red Jazz, said: "It is on the easy side of good."

Martin Harley, on board third-placed Arnold Lane, said: "It is on the slow side of good - maybe a little bit dead."

William Buick, partner of fourth Fencing, said: "Just on the slow side."

Richard Hughes, on board Libranno, said: "Good to soft would be about the right description."

Frankie Dettori, jockey of Scarf, said: "On the slow side of good."

Joseph O'Brien, on board Reply, described the going as: "Yielding."

James Doyle, rider of Telwaar, said: "Loose."

Jamie Spencer, partner of Sunday Times, said: "Maybe good to soft but it is very loose and kicking up."

COX DOES NOT WANT THE FEELING TO END

Clive Cox, the former jump jockey turned trainer, was delighted when welcoming in Reckless Abandon who held off the challenge of his main rival Moohaajim by a neck in the six-furlong Group One vision.ae Middle Park Stakes. They started the 9/4 joint favourites.

He said: "That was superb - I am just delighted for everyone. It is just a fantastic day.

"Reckless Abandon is very talented - what more can I say - he is amazing. We can deal with the rest of it (the horse's quirkyness).

"We don't try and replicate that (performance) at home so a lot of that was on trust today. I just knew he was happy and well. We had trained him to be fit.

"I have not wanted to trial him at home. He has gained more weight since he won the Morny and physically he keeps on improving.

"I am just delighted for everyone involved and everybody back home - they are a great team.

"To win two Group Ones with Reckless Abandon in a year is more than a dream - it is fantastic."

Reckless Abandon, a two-year-old colt by Exchange Rate (by Danzig), made virtually all after switching across to the stands' rails under Gerald Mosse. Moohaajim came alongside and may even have hit the front for a moment but the winner battled back very well.

The QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the Newmarket Classic over a mile in May next year, could be a target for Reckless Abandon but connections will consider what to do over the winter.

Cox added: "I think we will digest whether he is a sprinter or a miler a bit further before we comment. I am really pleased  from a bad draw that he used a bit early to get over to the rail. From the dip, I was a little bit concerned  where he went from there and he clearly showed a great attitude and battled well. For me, he was gaining on the line. We will see.

"It is a real privilege to be here - it is a feeling that I hope will last forever. Reckless Abandon is pretty effective at six furlongs but we will discuss it.

"Just as the lads let him off to go to the start, he jumped forward and the rail was quite close. He was going forwards at pace and Gerald did a pretty amazing job to sit tight. That all ended well.
"He can be quirky and all credit to my whole team for encouraging his progress and development  - it is just the way he is. It is the racing performance we are after.

"Reckless Abandon has always been in his comfort zone at home. Even coming here from the Morny, we had worked him but we would not be trialing him at home and I am still shaking at the way he has done that there.

"After his first start at Doncaster, it was pretty clear that he was heading in the right direction. It is great. With the fact that Darley purchased him after the Morny, it gives me a lot of pride to continue his progress and he is still very much on an upward curve.

"I would suggest that is it for the year - there is nowhere else to go. We are very happy with what we have done. These are lucky colours."

Owners Julie Deadman and Stephen Barrow sold Reckless Abandon to Darley Stud for an undisclosed sum after the Morny win which allowed them to lease the horse for the remainder of 2012 and for his three-year-old year.

Race 2 - vision.ae Middle Park Stakes - Winning Jockey Quotes

MOSSE FULL OF PRAISE FOR RECKLESS ABANDON

Jockey Gerald Mosse was full of praise for Reckless Abandon after the Exchange Rate juvenile retained his unbeaten record with a gutsy front-running performance in the Group One vision.ae Middle Park Stakes. The Frenchman was enjoying his third victory aboard Reckless Abandon following their victories in the Prix Morny and Prix Robert Papin.

Mosse said: "We had the chance to reach the lead without too much pressure and then I tried not to make it a French race in front but to give the horse a chance - I wanted to make sure that he relaxed in himself.

"When they started to come at the two-furlong (pole), he just started to pick up quite well. They came to the same line as me and he kept fighting - when I started to press him a bit hard, he answered.

"Getting to the rail was plan A but I had plan B and C because you never know with the two-year-olds. If he didn't break well, I didn't want to burn him out getting to the lead. The ground is perfect today, a bit on the soft side, but if you use him too much early on, he will pay for it at the end. He was lovely today.

"I was thinking that he was a Jump horse going down to the start because he nearly jumped a fence (rail)! He's not bad, he just wants to play

"As an experienced jockey I've been fortunate to ride some great horses including Arazi, Linamix and this horse - there are not many like him.

"He is not the biggest horse but has a big heart. He moves well and knows how to use himself. He is a playful horse and has lots of energy.

"I love riding him because every time I ride him, we win! He just kept finding for me today."

QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS NEXT?

Moohaajim, who battled gamely and briefly headed the winner Reckless Abandon, went down by a neck to finish second in the Group One vision.ae Middle Park Stakes.

Marco Botti, who trains the Cape Cross colt, who had previous finished fifth to the winner in the Group One Darley Prix Morny on good ground, said after the race: "I was a little bit worried by the ground, despite it drying out. It is still on the soft side of good. When Moohaajim jumped out for the first couple of furlongs I thought he wasn't really handling the ground and wasn't travelling as strongly as he usually does. Adam (Kirby, jockey) said he let him find his feet and then he let him take his chance but the winner found a little bit more. I am sure he will get further in the future.  I think the QIPCO 2000 Guineas has to be considered - why not - he has the pedigree to be a better three-year-old and I think he will definitely get a mile and there is still improvement to come in him."

Adam Kirby who rode Moohaajim, having turned down the chance to ride the winner earlier in the week, said afterwards: "I am not upset at all - I am delighted for Reckless Abandon and for his owners and trainer. My horse was never really going on the ground, he was always out of his comfort zone - which is very unlike him. I just had to wait for him to come good and when I asked him to finish I thought I had Reckless (Abandon) beat, we had a little battle but my horse didn't show today what he can do."

Race 3 - Dubai Dewhurst Stakes

DAWN APPROACH RETAINS UNBEATEN RECORD TO GIVE BOLGER FIFTH DARLEY DEWHURST TRIUMPH

Dawn Approach made it six out of six when registering a comfortable two and three-quarter length success in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes. Partnered by Kevin Manning, the 30/100 favourite briefly looked as if he may be in trouble but show a devastating turn of foot in the final furlong to push aside stablemate Leitir Mor.

For trainer Jim Bolger, this was his fifth success in seven years in the very prestigious seven-furlong event following the victories of Teofilo (2006), Dawn Approach's sire New Approach (2007), Intense Focus (2008) and Parish Hall (2011).

After Dawn Approach's victory at Royal Ascot in June, he was sold to Godolphin and speaking after the race, Godolphin's founder and driving force Sheikh Mohammed said: "Today is a great day and we are very happy.

"I was impressed with Dawn Approach when he won his maiden and I thought that he was a good horse. I could have been wrong - I could have bought a bad horse - but, thank God, we were lucky.

"Good horses always find something and Insha'Allah he will be back for the 2000 Guineas. I think that he will get a mile or a mile and a quarter but I don't know if he is a Derby horse yet. I think the trainer will see."

When asked if Dawn Approach would remain in training with Bolger, Sheikh Mohammed replied: "Yes."

Jim Bolger commented: "There were no real anxious moments today. He just has a lazy style of racing. Once Kevin wound him up, there were never any concerns.

"Kevin says he will get further but I think he we start off over a mile next year and take it from there.

"I don't know how my record compares to others people in the race as I haven't looked at the statistics. We like to target the Dewhurst because we always receive a warm welcome here at Newmarket."

When told he had won the Darley Dewhurst Stakes five times in seven years, Bolger added: "I am just wondering what happened the other two years!"

Kevin Manning added: "We have been very fortunate over the last few years to have such good two-year-olds and he is another one of those.

"It was a proper run race and, two down, he just always hits his flat spot for a couple of strides until he gets into top gear. I know the horse and I knew that there was plenty there.  Once he hit the rising ground, he has really gone away.

"He is developing all the time and is a fine big horse. Today was the plan and I will leave plans for next year to the boss."

Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, said: "He will be prepared for the 2000 Guineas. Kevin Manning feels the horse will get further than a mile and he could be aimed at the major 10-furlong summer race next years but the Guineas is the initial plan.

"He stays with Jim Bolger and that is Sheikh Mohammed's decision.

"He won't run again this year and goes back to Ireland."

MUCH EASIER

Kevin Manning, the winning jockey on Dawn Approach, added: "He is very, very straightforward. You can drop him in or do anything you like with him because he got a great cruising speed and he picks up - he ticks all of the boxes.

"He is much easier to deal with than his father. New Approach used to get ponied to the start and there was always a little temperament about him, where as this horse is much more straightforward.

"It's been a long year but Dawn Approach has kept progressing - he is strengthening up all of the time and I think that he is improving all of the time.

"He had a busy campaign up to Ascot and it was a nice break for him afterwards. He did it very well in the National Stakes at the Curragh after a long lay-off.

"You can often find a small field in races like this and things don't always unfold the way you would like them to. You only get one chance at these big races, so it's nice to have a horse who can cut out the pace and make sure that it is a truly run race.

"I felt that we went a very good pace - it never dropped - and the lead horse kept quickening it all the way down into the dip. When I took the lead off him in the dip, I quickened all the way to the line.

"It's very hard to say at this stage of his career whether he can go from seven furlongs to a mile and a half but I have no doubt that he will get further than a mile. He was showing no signs of stopping today.

"To ride any horse of this ability is exciting, but it is great to have ridden the father and now ride a horse as good as him. It's fantastic to be part of the whole dynasty."

O'BRIEN PLEASED

Adian O'Brien expressed himself pleased with his charge, George Vancouver, who finishd third to the still unbeaten Dawn Approach, in the Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. "He ran well" the trainer commented after the race.

Joseph O'Brien, who rode the Henrythenavigator colt for his father, added: "He ran well and was nice and relaxed but the winner just found a little bit more."

John Gosden, who sent out the fourth, Ashdan, from his Newmarket base, said: "The champion two-year-old has been crowned, and I think in the vision.ae Middle Park you saw the second champion two-year-old. It has been phenomenal racing so far and fast times. This is real high quality racing and run at a true pace. This (Dubai Dewhurst Stakes) race was run like a sprint, fast all the way and it was a good Dewhurst.

"This is probably the best ground left in Europe. I am delighted with Ashdan. He is not really wordly enough for that and he is bred to stay a lot further so it is a nice run but this was all a little bit quick and a bit sudden. To go from an un-raced colts maiden to a conditions race to this is a big jump - but he is a horse for next year. These are proper Guineas horses."

Race 4 - Betfred Cesarewitch - Winning Trainer Quotes

AAIM CREATES HISTORY BY BECOMING FIRST DUAL WINNER OF BETFRED CESAREWITCH

Aaim To Prosper created history by becoming the first horse to win the Betfred Cesarewitch twice.

The eight-year-old previously won the marathon two mile, two furlong heritage handicap in 2010 and having not entered the winner's enclosure since, was returned at 66/1 (£77.10 with totepool).

Partnered by Kieren Fallon, Aaim To Prosper raced prominently and stayed on well close home to score by half a length from the 7/1 favourite Countrywide Flame.

Successful trainer Brian Meehan said: "He won the race before, so why couldn't he win it again?

"Although he hadn't won since he won this race two years ago, he had been campaigned in Pattern and Stakes company.

"Kieren Fallon said when the horse ran here the last day that he would appreciate some cut in the ground and that has obviously made a huge difference.

"He is a good horse and good horses can always come back and do it again. This horse is all heart and has won today despite being 20lb higher than two years ago. He has been committed and stayed on well, as he did two years ago.

"Kieren has given him a wonderful ride,. He rode him here a fortnight ago and understands him.

"It is great for everyone at the yard and his owners who have always been very supportive."

Fourth race - Betfred Cesarewitch

FALLON DELIGHTED

Kieren Fallon made history when partnering top-weight Aaim To Prosper to victory in the £160,000 Betfred Cesarewitch.

It was the first time that a horse has won the Cesarewitch (founded in 1839) twice - Aaim To Prosper took the 2010 running of the heritage handicap under Louis-Phillippe Beuzelin.

Fallon was enjoying a second victory in the Cesarewitch too, following on from Top Cees in 1999.

The jockey said: "Aaim To Prosper was off the bridle the whole way - even leaving the stalls, I was having to push and scrub to hold my position. He is as tough as nails and he really wanted it.

"I think that he has had his niggly little problems and the ground has been too fast the last couple of runs - this bit of juice has really helped.

"When I looked across and saw Hughsie doing a half-speed, I thought that we were racing for second but this lad just seemed to pick up and find a new lease of life.

"The key was the cut in the ground - it is very important to him. He is tough - he ran a good race last time when the ground was too fast. He responded very well in the final furlong - he really, really tries hard.

"I did not go too soon, but soon enough to win the race. They had gone quick up front. When Jimmy (Quinn on the second) came to me, I thought he was going to go past. But mine has done it well and good.

"It was a strong race - these big handicaps are tough races to win and a lot of work goes into them. So it is a great feeling."

KEPLER'S LAW

Kepler's Law has been humanely put down after sadly suffering an injury in the Betfred Cesarewitch.

The four-year-old gelding, trained by Sir Mark Prescott and ridden by Chris Catlin, ruptured a tendon.

BACK TO THE TIMBER FOR COUNTRYWIDE

John Quinn's Triumph Hurdle hero Countrywide Flame just failed to deny history when second to Aaim To Prosper, who won the Betfred Ceserawitch in 2010, and becomes the first dual winner in history, by half-a-length. None the less Quinn was pleased with his charge, who was sent off the 7/1 favourite.

Quinn said: "He's run really well and I am really pleased - as pleased as one can be when coming second.

"The winner kept pulling out, he was always holding Countrywide Flame but were very pleased.

"We will either run in the Fighting Fifth (Newcastle) or the Bula Hurdle (Cheltenham) next."

Jimmy Quinn, who rode the Haafhd gelding, added: "The winner had the ideal position all the way, and I half gave Kieren (Fallon) a lead and when we came to the top of the hill I thought I had him but Kieren's mount (Aaim To Prosper) kept finding more and when I got to him he dug deep and found all the way to the line.

"My horse hasn't stopped - he's run a very strong race and he is a nice horse but we just met one on the day. Three times I have been second in this race now!"

Race 5 - vision.ae Rockfel Stakes

THREE OUT OF THREE FOR JUST THE JUDGE

Dubai Future Champions Day 2012 has provided some outstanding two-year-old performances and Just The Judge became the third horse to preserve an unbeaten record when she registered a gutsy length and three quarters success in the Group Two vision.ae Rockfel Stakes.

Partnered by Michael Hills, the 6/1 chance found plenty in the closing stages to repel the challenge of Nargys.

Winning trainer Charlie Hills said: "She won like a nice filly and Michael said she still had another gear.

"She has gone away again when she hit the rising ground.

"She has gone in her coat and had a bad scope following her last run and we had thought of not running today, but I am delighted we decided to give it one more go.

"It helps enormously to have a filly in the yard like her going into the winter."

Ladbrokes introduced Just The Judge into the betting for the 2013 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at 20/1 while she is 16/1 (from 25/1) with Paddy Power.

David Redvers, bloodstock advisor to joint-winning owners Qatar Racing Limited, said: "This filly has a lovely pedigree. She has size, scope and is bred to improve."

Redvers also had news of Hydrogen (a Galileo half-brother to the 2007 Derby winner Authorized), the 2.5 million guineas sales-topper at Tattersalls this week who Redvers purchased on behalf of Qatar Racing.

He continued: "The colt has gone to Tweenhills Stud and will be broken in by the former jump jockey Graham McCourt.

"There will be a yearling parade for the Sheikhs on November 18 when it will be announced who will train the horse.  Someone is going to look scared and happy at the same time!"

BAN FOR MICHAEL HILLS

Jockey Michael Hills picked up a two-day ban for his ride on second-placed Red Jazz in the opening Dubai Challenge Stakes. The stewards held Hills had used his whip above the permitted level.

The ban takes effect on Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30.

QIPCO 1000 GUINEAS ON THE HORIZON

Nargys, a Lawman filly who was sold to John Warren on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum for 125,000euros at the Goffs Orby sale last year, stepped up in class to take second in the Group Two vision.ae Rockfel Stakes, beaten one-and-three-quarter lengths.

Nargys, who had previously run in maidens and been second in the Carrie Red Handicap at Doncaster last time out, pleased her trainer Luca Cumani, who said: "She ran very well - she was a bit unlucky because she couldn't come out when she wanted to. She had a couple of horses in front of her bringing her back whilst the winner went clear, then when she got a gap she flew. I am delighted with her.

"That will be it for this year but it would be nice to think she will be a QIPCO 1000 Guineas filly."

Mickael Barzalona, who rode third placed Desert Blossom for trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, said afterwards: "She ran well and has improved after each race. I am happy and think she will win a Group race."

Sixth race: The Autumn Stakes
Win quotes

TRADING IN AUTUMN GLORY

Trading Leather, who was sent off the 5/2 joint favourite, duly justified expectations when winning the Group Three Autumn Stakes for trainer-breeder Jim Bolger by three-quarters-of-a-length.

The two-year-old Teofilo colt had been placed second in a Listed event first time out before losing his maiden tag in a mile maiden at Gowran Park on his second and last outing when scoring by seven lengths.

Bolger, who also bred and trained the colt's sire, said afterwards: "I have been liking him for a long time but he is very much a ground-dependent horse who wants good ground and we haven't had it all year.  The first chance I had to run him was at Leopardstown (Mile, Listed race) so we were happy to let him start. The next chance for him was in his maiden.

"We will see how he comes out of this but he is in the Racing Post Trophy (Doncaster) but we will have to see what the ground is like there."

Asked if this was his Derby horse, Bolger replied: "Yes."

Race 7 - Darley Stakes - Winning Quotes

DESERVED SUCCESS FOR MULL OF KILLOUGH

Mull Of Killough, who was beaten three-quarters of a length when runner-up in the Betfred Cambridgeshire a fortnight ago, gained handsome consolation when landing the Group Three Darley Stakes over the same course and distance.

Partnered by Joseph O'Brien, the six-year-old stayed on courageously to see off all challengers and at the finish had three lengths to spare over Saigon. He was returned at 8/1.

Winning trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said: "He has been an unlucky horse as he has finished runner-up in two big handicaps this season (the Cambridgeshire and the Lincoln).

"He had his best period of training between the Cambridgeshire and today. He has always had problems with his feet and it has been a great effort from my assistant Abi Harrison and the farrier Colin to keep him going.

"After winning this race the Lincoln next year is going to be out for him so I think we could look at the Winter Derby at Lingfield instead.

"It is good to have a horse like him for a small yard like ours. The team worked hard for this.

"Joseph rode him last time and is a Group One class jockey so it made sense to use him again."

SALES FOR SAIGON?

James Toller's tough campaigner Saigon again found one too good when coming second in the Group Three Darley Stakes, beaten three lengths.

The three-year-old Royal Applause gelding, who is entered in the up-coming Tattersalls Horses in Training sale, delighted his trainer who said: "We have a tough decision to make as he is entered in the sales. I am delighted today, it was a very good run. He's been consistent all year and is nearly there.

"He's been a great horse to train and I have enjoyed having him. He's a real consistent game horse.

"He's the most genuine, tough horse and has never had a break and has never run a bad race. He's had a few times when things haven't gone right for him. He looked there that he might get a mile-and-a-quarter."

Kirsty Milczarek, who rode Saigon, added: "He hasn't got a bad race in him. He's been running in tough company all year and just found one to good again today and the ground was against him.

Asked if he would win at this level Milczarek replied: "Definitely! He may get a mile-and-a-quarter or a mile-and-three if he settles."
