Racing's X-Factor at Newmarket Racecourse

Racing's very own X-Factor is at Newmarket Racecourse on Saturday, October 6, for the 2012 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals when 24 budding jockeys will take to the track, having qualified throughout the Series at 27 British racecourses between April and October.

Those competing, and many others involved in the initiative, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the 100+ graduates from Pony Racing who have already progressed and hold a BHA Jockeys' Licence, in addition to many more that now work within the horseracing industry.

Former Pony Racing rider Harry Derham said: "I am so thankful to Pony Racing for the experience it gave me before I turned professional.  I learnt so much from it, from race riding tactics and technique to general fitness requirements, etiquette and procedures in racing.  I had some great days Pony Racing and hope I can be as successful as a professional jockey now!  I rode in The Finals a few times but sadly never won them.  Good luck to everyone riding in them this weekend."

Rebecca Davies, Chief Executive of the Pony Racing Authority, added: "The 2012 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals are the culmination of the best part of a year's hard work for many riders.  Newmarket are kindly hosting The Finals for the first time, and I know the two races will be hotly- contested.

"Charles Owen's investment and support of Pony Racing is significant.  Not only have they backed the initiative since 2005, they have recently committed to a further two year's sponsorship until 2014.  At The Finals, all riders will receive a Charles Owen helmet of their choice (worth over £1,500 in total) thanks to the continued generosity of our sponsor."

Newmarket Racecourses' director of racing Michael Prosser said: "We are delighted to be staging The Finals as we've always been staunch advocates of the Pony Racing Authrotiy and of the Series.

"In the past we've enjoyed having pony races on the Rowley Mile and, for the first time this year, also on the July Course when they preceded racing at our early June Saturday fixture.

"This Saturday sees us hosting a high-class racing programme and so the accompanying Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals provide a great opportunity for the young riders to perform on a big stage.

"The Series has already played a key part in nurturing the talents of several very promising riders and we are sure Saturday will again showcase similar ability - we very much look forward to both races."

  The 2012 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals take place at Newmarket Racecourse on Saturday, October 6 at 12:35 and 13:00 before professional racing.       Riders must be aged 11 - 15 years with ponies measuring 138cm & Under and 148cm & Under.The 24 ponies competing on Saturday are the highest rated in Pony Racing, having accumulated points for wins and placed runs this season.  The top 12 ponies in each height category qualify for The Finals. Over 200 PRA Pony Races took place in 2012 at Point-to-Points, Racecourse and on Pony Club Racedays. Charles Owen, title sponsor to the Racecourse Series, is world renowned for its range of high performance equestrian helmets and quality products for the equestrian athlete.   The 2012 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals will be contested by;
