14 GO FORWARD FOR LADBROKES ST LEGER @DoncasterRaces AT DONCASTER ON SATURDAY

Today's five-day Ladbrokes St Leger confirmation stage sees 14 three-year-olds go forward for the Doncaster Classic headed by three joint 4/1 favourites with Ladbrokes - the John Gosden-trained Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes second Excess Knowledge, Aidan O'Brien's Queen's Vase hero Leading Light and Irish Derby runner-up and Investec Derby third Galileo Rock from David Wachman's stable.
Ladbrokes St Leger 2012
There were 11 five-day Ladbrokes St Leger entries at this stage last year, when nine went to post for the fifth and final Classic.

Excess Knowledge, along with stable companion Feel Like Dancing (16/1), is bidding to give Gosden a fifth Ladbrokes St Leger victory.

O'Brien's customary strong challenge could also consist of Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes runner-up Foundry (6/1) and Sandown Classic Trial second Eye Of The Storm (16/1). Ireland's champion trainer is seeking  his fourth Ladbrokes St Leger winner.

Godolphin, the most successful current owner in the Ladbrokes St Leger with six wins, has three possibles, headlined by Investec Derby second Libertarian (8/1) plus Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes third Secret Number (16/1) and Cap O'Rushes (20/1), successful in the Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Ralph Beckett plans to run Investec Oaks heroine Talent (12/1), who is aiming to be the first filly to win the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival since User Friendly in 1992.

Great Hall (20/1), Havana Beat (33/1), London Bridge (50/1) and Ralston Road (66/1) are the others going forward.

Latest Ladbrokes St Leger betting with Ladbrokes:-

CONNECTIONS TALK ABOUT THEIR 2013 LADBROKES ST LEGER HOPES

AIDAN O'BRIEN

Eye Of The Storm has not been out since going down by a head in the Group Three Classic Trial at Sandown Park on April 26.

O'Brien said: "Eye Of The Storm is just coming back after a long break and runs in a Listed race at Galway tonight.

"The St Leger is probably going to come too quick for him but we left him in just in case he bolted up on the bridle tonight.

"He is a class horse and we always thought that this race would suit. But it looks like we have run out of time with him."

Foundry won his only start at two, a seven-furlong maiden at Leopardstown in November, but did not appear this season until August 21, when he was runner-up to Telescope in the Group Two Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

O'Brien said: "We were delighted with Foundry's run last time in the Great Voltigeur at York. That was his first run of the season and he was still running for experience, so we were delighted with how forward he was.

"He has had three weeks since York and is in good form.

"You would hope that the extra trip at Doncaster will be within his compass. He is a big, long-striding, good-moving horse and came home very well at York."

Ballydoyle's leading Ladbrokes St Leger contender would appear to be Leading Light. The son of Montjeu has won four of his five starts, most recently taking the two-mile Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in June.

O'Brien said: "He had only gone as far as a mile and a quarter before the Queen's Vase but he got the trip well at Ascot.

"We thought of going to the Voltigeur with him but he was not 100 per cent and gave him a couple of weeks off. We have been very happy with him over the last three weeks though and we always thought that Doncaster would suit him. He has not disappointed us yet, travels well and always finds plenty off the bridle."

Looking ahead to who will ride Ballydoyle's Ladbrokes St Leger runners, O'Brien said: "We will just get the horses into the race first and see. It will not be a problem to get jockeys. We have Joseph (O'Brien), Seamus (Heffernan) and hopefully Ryan (Moore). Things are just up in the air at the moment.

"Good ground should suit every horse. We'd be happy with good ground. The groundstaff at Doncaster do well."

O'Brien is seeking a fourth Ladbrokes St Leger success following Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005).

GODOLPHIN

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, said: "Encke was a great winner of the Ladbrokes St Leger in 2012 and he was our sixth Ladbrokes St Leger success in 20 years so we have a great track record in the Classic. It is a race we love and a fantastic heritage race - being the oldest Classic and part of the fabric of British racing. It is very much on the radar each year. We have a lot of horses who fit the profile of the race and naturally get drawn towards it. The Ladbrokes St Leger is one of the highlights of the whole year for us.

"Secret Number is bred to be a mile and a quarter horse and he looks to be one of these nearly horses - he does not seem to win on the big occasion. For me, I would be surprised if he was good enough to win on Saturday. He is in good form and, indeed, did his best piece of work ever leading up to this race. But I would be a bit surprised to see him in the winner's enclosure.

"Cap O'Rushes was disappointing last time in the Great Voltigeur but the ground on the Knavesmire was very quick. I would suggest you take a line through him and Excess Knowledge who is one of the contenders to be favourite, while Cap O'Rushes is an unconsidered outsider. But Cap Of Rushes beat him at Goodwood. Though Excess Knowledge was an unlucky loser, there is no doubt that Cap O'Rushes, given his ground, is the most interesting of our three contenders at the price.

"Libertarian was bought with the Ladbrokes St Leger very much in mind. We thought he would be an ideal candidate for the Classic. But, having said that, I cannot help wondering if that will backfire. His run in the Irish Derby was too bad to be true, but the ground was very quick that day and he didn't like it. It has taken him a long time to get over that race, while he had a very hard campaign in the spring. Karl Burke, very generously, told us everything we needed to know about the horse. Libertarian never shows anything in his work and has never showed us anything either - I think we are going there guessing. The jury is out and he still has a lot to prove.

"We will have to wait and see what the jockey arrangements will be in the next 48 hours. We have got Silvestre (de Sousa), we have got Mickael (Barzalona) and we will hopefully get the best available for the third horse, whoever that may be.

"Silvestre will ride Secret Number, while Mickael will either be on Libertarian or Cap O'Rushes. Going into the race, you have got to fancy Galileo Rock. He was beaten half a length by Libertarian in the Derby but will take all the beating. I also like the filly Talented. I think her Oaks win was superb and you can put a line through her race in Ireland - they went so slow and her chances were mitigated. If they go a proper gallop, then she will be bang there."

DAVID WACHMAN

David Wachman, the trainer of Irish Derby second and Investec Derby third Galileo Rock,  commented: "Galileo Rock seems well and we are happy with him.

"He has run well in two Derbys and is very much entitled to take his chance on Saturday.  His three-parts brother, Saddler's Rock, stays well and hopefully he does too.

"Good ground will be fine though fast going would be better. Wayne Lordan, who is a top-class jockey, will ride Galileo Rock again. The horses are running well."

JOHN GOSDEN

John Gosden is after a fifth Ladbrokes St Leger victory. He has one of the 4/1 joint favourites in Excess Knowledge and Feels Like Dancing.

He said today: "The Ladbrokes St Leger is fantastic race, with a great track and a great crowd. It is probably the best galloping track in Europe.

"Feels Like Dancing is fine after his Bahrain Trophy win - it is a route I have taken before with Masked Marvel. He is a solid horse and stays well. William Buick will be on board.

"Excess Knowledge will be ridden by James Doyle. He was making a nice run down the outside in the Gordon Stakes and there was horse wandering around in front of him every time we made a move. He flew at the finish but was just beaten.

"That is racing. I like him and, bred the way he is, the distance of a mile, six and a half furlongs should be within his compass. Good ground will be fair for everybody, but both horses will be appreciate any rain that comes."

ANDREW BALDING

Trainer Andrew Balding, who saddled Phoenix Reach to finish third in the 2003 St Leger, is set to be represented this time around by Havana Beat. The son of Teofilo was third in both the Group Three Chester Vase (behind subsequent Derby winner Ruler Of The World) and in the Group Three Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket behind fellow Ladbrokes St Leger aspirant Feel Like Dancing. However, he disappointed last time out when last of seven behind Cap O'Rushes in the Group Three Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 30.

Balding said: "He was unlucky in the Bahrain Trophy as he got caught in a pocket and only finished up getting beaten two necks. He stays very well.

"For whatever reason, he ran badly at Goodwood but he really pleased me with the way he worked on Saturday.

"If he had won the Bahrain Trophy and was going straight for the Leger he certainly wouldn't be a 33/1 shot. Looking at previous St Legers, it looks like the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot is a pretty good guide and he was a staying-on fifth in that race. He stayed on all the way to the line and there are some clues that suggest he might have a chance.

"The Ladbrokes St Leger is a race I would love to win. There have been plenty of St Leger winners trained at Kingsclere but none for a long time. His owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti have been tremendous supporters of the yard over the last four or five years and hopefully this horse will give them a run for their money."

RALPH BECKETT

Talent will be attempting to become the first filly to win the Ladbrokes St Leger since User Friendly 21 years ago. Like User Friendly, Talent was also previously successful in the Investec Oaks at Epsom Downs.

Her trainer, Ralph Beckett, said: "Look Here ran a very good race for us in the St Leger when she was third [in 2008]. I wasn't sure she got home and it was probably a very good Leger, won by Conduit.

"Talent is in good shape. She has not had the ideal preparation, as I was keen to run her in the Yorkshire Oaks but the ground was too quick. I think she would be better with a run under her belt.

"She galloped at Kempton over a mile last week and we were pleased with the way it went. She doesn't knock herself out in her work.

"We have always felt she is a strong stayer and that the St Leger is the right race for her under the right conditions. She needs a bit of juice in the ground, not like the ground when she ran in the Irish Oaks. I am not convinced that the ground was the only reason for her poor performance in Ireland but I wouldn't want to run her on fast ground again until I knew for sure."

JO HUGHES

Lambourn handler Jo Hughes is set to have her first runner in the world's oldest Classic, courtesy of London Bridge.

The son of Arch completed a hat-trick of wins in a 12-furlong handicap at Ripon on June 20, and finished third in a valuable handicap over the same trip at Ascot on July 13. He stepped up in distance and class for the Listed Prix Michel Houyvet over 15 furlongs at Deauville on August 15, in which he ran respectably to finish fourth.

Hughes said: "As long as there isn't a lot of rain at Doncaster, London Bridge will run.

"I was slightly disappointed with his run in France, but he has come out of it well. I don't think the French style of racing suited him because they are inclined to go slower and try and quicken, whereas our horse is an out and out galloper.

"I wouldn't be at all concerned about the trip in the St Leger and the English style of racing should suit him better.

"Before his run in France, he had been improving with every run and I don't think he has achieved his full potential yet. He is still improving in himself and I don't think it will be the best St Leger there has ever been, so we have to give it a go."

BRIAN MEEHAN

Red Rocks finished third in the 2006 Ladbrokes St Leger for trainer Brian Meehan and this time around the Manton handler is set to saddle Great Hall

The Halling colt will be making his fifth start on Saturday at Doncaster and his first since annexing a 14-furlong handicap at Haydock Park on July 4.

Speaking for the Keeneland bloodstock sales in the USA, Meehan said: "We have quite a few stayers in the yard this season.

"He hung a bit left and hung a bit right and was green at Haydock last time, but he actually won with plenty in hand.  It probably looked a bit more pressured than it was.

"Kieren Fallon takes the ride and the ground should be fine for him."

PAT SHANAHAN

Pat Shanhan, trainer of outsider Ralston Road who finished eighth to Leading Light n the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, commented: " He ran a very good race at Ascot and was not beaten far despite meeting interference.

"It is great to have him and I expect a big run as he is in super form and is a great galloper. Tadhg O'Shea will ride him again."

 THE GROUND AT DONCASTER

DONCASTER GOING

The going at Doncaster today is Good, Good to Firm in places.

The GoingStick reading was 7.7 at 7:45am.

There was 10.4 millimetres of rainfall on Friday, 1 millimetre on Saturday and on Sunday a light shower deposited 0.2 millimetres of rain.

Weather Forecast

Tuesday - 80% chance of showers 1-3 millimetres - temperature high of +17c.

Wednesday - Dry - temperature high of +18c

Thursday - Day-time dry - temperature high of +22c - 60% chance of a rain shower overnight - up to 4 millimetres.

Friday - Dry - temperature high of +18c

Saturday - Dry - temperature high of +17c

The track has been verti-drained prior to this meeting.

Mark Spincer, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, said: "The team have done a great job with the ground at Doncaster and hopefully we will have good ground on Saturday.

"Hopefully, we will not need to do anything watering but we can if we need to.

"We had a brilliant Ladbrokes St Leger day last year. We have done a lot of work with Ladbrokes over the years now and really got this meeting back where it deserves to be.

"Saturday, Ladbrokes St Leger Day, is selling really well and two of the enclosures are at capacity. We have just 40 hospitality places left and we will have a bigger corporate attendance on Saturday this year over last year when we had the Camelot effect.

"General admission tickets are going well. I would hope we would get in the region of 28,000 to 29,000 on the day - not as much as last year (30,000) but in 2011 the crowd figure was 25,500.

"The Ladbrokes St Leger Festival begins on Wednesday, with Leger Legends who have raised over £360,000 in the last three years for charity. They have really given us a lift on the Wednesday, Thursday is DFS Ladies' Day and there is fabulous racing on Friday when we hope to have over 10,000 racegoers."

LEGENDS TAKE CENTRE STAGE ON CROWN HOTEL BAWTRY OPENING DAY

The Clipper Logistics Legends Classified Stakes (3.35pm), which sees 16 riders return to the saddle in aid of Jack Berry House and the Northern Racing College, is being staged for the fourth time at Doncaster on Crown Hotel Bawtry Opening Day, Wednesday, September 11.

The line up features Carl Llewellyn, who captured the Grand National on Party Politics in 1992 and Earth Summit in 1998, and Derby-winning jockey Michael Hills, who rode over 2,000 winners worldwide.

Kevin Darley won the Flat jockeys' championship in 2000 and returns for another crack at this unique contest after finishing seventh last year, while Willie Supple, who partnered over 800 winners in Britain and Ireland, has his first ride in race.

Other notable names include leading Northern trainer David O'Meara, sculptor Willie Newton and Derby-winning jockey Willie Ryan.

The mile event has been organised by the Professional Jockeys' Association's Industry Liaison Officer Dale Gibson, who will also be riding in the race.

The action gets underway with the £15,000 Arena Group Nursery (2.00pm, 14 runners) over seven furlongs.

The longest race of the day is the £20,000 Park Hill Hospital Conditions Stakes (4.10pm, 6 runners) over an extended mile and quarter, which has been won by the likes of Twice Over and Kirklees in recent years.

A total of 18 runners go to post for the £20,000 Beauty At Doncaster Handicap (4.45pm) over seven furlongs, while the concluding Berendsen Workwear Handicap (5.15pm) has attracted 22 runners.

About the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival

The Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is the jewel in the crown of horseracing in Yorkshire and the showpiece of Doncaster's social calendar. Racegoers enjoy a delightful blend of history, quality racing and live entertainment across the four-day racing extravaganza. The 2013 renewal takes place from Wednesday, September 11 through to Saturday, September 14 inclusive.

Since the first running of the St Leger in 1776, racegoers from all over the country have been drawn to Doncaster to capture a taste of the unique atmosphere.

The famous Festival is one of the highlights of the Flat racing calendar. The crescendo builds to Saturday, when the flagship event - the illustrious Ladbrokes St Leger - takes centre-stage.

The meeting also features a number of high-class supporting races, highlights being the Crown Hotel Bawtry Scarbrough Stakes on the Crown Hotel Bawtry Opening Day (Wednesday), the DFS Park Hill Stakes on DFS Ladies' Day (Thursday), the Speedy Services Doncaster Cup on Friday and the At The Races Champagne Stakes and OLBG Park Stakes on Saturday.

To book tickets, please contact Doncaster Racecourse on 01302 304200 or go to www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk
