ANOTHER PEARL FOR BARRON

Pearl Ice produced a tenacious performance to land the Download The Ladbrokes Bingo App Handicap by a neck at Doncaster this afternoon.

Ladbrokes St Leger 2012The 11/1 shot was always prominent and took up the running with a furlong to go but as they entered the final stages of the race, his rivals were bearing down on him at a rate of knots and it looked like the five-year-old would be swallowed up.

However, jockey Graham Gibbons galvanised his mount to produce one last effort and the gelding gamely responded, fending off the persistent challenge of runner-up and 9/2 favourite Fairway To Heaven to claim the victory.

Pearl Ice had disappointed last time out when well fancied for the Great St Wilfrid Stakes at Ripon but had run well there when second the time before and Barron was convinced that his charge had put his best foot forward today.

"That was a good performance," said trainer David Barron.

"He's a game horse and he's really stuck his neck out there. He didn't run too badly last time out but maybe the ground was too quick and it was slightly better company than he faced here.

"He ran really well at Ripon the time before on good to soft and is a decent sprinter on his day. He's also shown that he can carry weight well so we're hopeful he can land another race before the season is out."

GROUND THE BOGEY FOR FAIRWAY

A neck defeat for 9/2 favourite Fairway To Heaven in the Download the Ladbrokes Bingo App Handicap has led to a change of plans for the four-year-old. "We were going to go for the Ayr Gold Cup after winning this," said trainer Michael Wigham, "but obviously we won't get in now. So we'll have to find a Plan B."

Fairway To Heaven, owned by a group of golfing enthusiasts, was having only his fifth start, and second this year. "He's needed time, and we've given it to him," added Newmarket-based Wigham. "A furlong out he was travelling like a winner but the ground was a bit slow and dead today and in the closing stages he just got stuck in it.

"But even though the ground was against him, he's run a blinder and we're delighted with him. He's going to be a proper Saturday horse."

The son of Jeremy was ridden by Frankie Dettori, who said: "He was the last off the bridle, but in the last bit the ground was just too sticky."
