ASCRIPTION
IMPRESSIVE IN FINALE
Ascription
produced an impressive display to land the final race of the Ladbrokes St
Leger Festival, the mile Harriet De-Vere Powell Handicap, by five lengths.
The 2/1
favourite proved to be a cut above his rivals, travelling sweetly under
William Buick before powering away in the last furlong to put plenty of
daylight between himself and runner-up Gabrial The Great.
"Hasn't
it just been a wonderful day?" said trainer Hugo Palmer, who recorded a
62/1 double on Town Moor after saddling 20/1 shot Photography to win earlier
on this afternoon.
"What
can you say? He's always been a very good animal and his owners have been
very patient with him. He's had a gelding operation, a wind operation and now
he's four-years-old, he's only just beginning to repay them.
"He's
in both the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket and the Challenge Cup at Ascot and
I'm leaning towards the latter with him. Will (Buick) got off him and said
that a stiff seven furlongs would suit and Ryan (Moore) said the same thing
after he rode him recently at Haydock.
"His
owner is keen on trying him at seven furlongs as well so that's probably
where he'll go. He's a half-brother to a Grade One winner in the States
(Grand Couturier) who won over a mile and a half so there's every chance he
could stay further but he's shown so much speed recently that there's not
much point in changing a winning formula.
"That's
the first double of my career. I set myself two targets this year - to have a
double and to train a Group One winner. I don't think I'll do the latter but
this fellow has given me a Glorious Goodwood winner and he's now won at the
Leger meeting so we're very happy."
