LADBROKES EYE UP TALENT AHEAD OF ST LEGER

Excess Knowledge and Galileo Rock are the 10/3 joint-favourites with the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster after a final field of 11 was declared this morning for the final Classic of the season on Saturday.

Feel Like Dancing, Eye Of The Storm and London Bridge have been taken out of the Group One race which means that William Buick, who has previously won the race on Masked Marvel (2011) and Arctic Cosmos (2010), is free to continue his partnership with Investec Derby runner-up Libertarian (8/1), who was bought after the Epsom Classic by Godolphin.

Godolphin also runs Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes winner Cap O'Rushes (20/1) as well as Secret Number (16/1) in the richest-ever running of the Ladbrokes St Leger.

Aidan O'Brien runs two horses in the extended one mile, six-furlong event as he aims to land his fourth Ladbrokes St Leger having won the race in the past with Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005). Royal Ascot winner Leading Light (4/1 from 5/1) will be ridden by Joseph O'Brien while Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur runner-up Foundry (5/1) will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

Talent (10/1 from 12/1) has been popular with the sponsors after the ground eased on Town Moor yesterday and with Ralph Beckett set to appear on Channel 4's cherished Morning Line programme, Ladbrokes' David Williams expects there to be more support for the Investec Oaks winner.

"The anticipated support for Talent arrived with the rain at Doncaster and there's every reason for thinking her price could contract even further," said the firm's spokesman David Williams.

"If we get any more rain on Town Moor, she looks certain to start a single-figure price."

Great Hall (25/1), Havana Beat (33/1) and Ralston Road (100/1) make up the 11-strong field. Scorpion (2005) was the last Irish-trained winner of the Ladbrokes St Leger and the sponsors make it a 4/5 chance that Ireland capture the Group One event once more.

Ladbrokes St Leger - sponsors bet: 10/3 Excess Knowledge, Galileo Rock; 4/1 (from 5/1) Leading Light; 5/1 Foundry; 8/1 Libertarian; 10/1 (from 12/1) Talent; 16/1 Secret Number; 20/1 Cap O'Rushes; 25/1 Great Hall; 33/1 Havana Beat; 100/1 Ralston Road.

1/4 1-2-3. Non runner- no bet.

Ladbrokes St Leger - sponsors bet: 4/5 Irish-trained winner.

ST LEGER MILESTONES

*This year's Ladbrokes St Leger is the richest ever run, with a total prize fund of £600,000. The winner will take home £340,260. The first winner Allabaculia earned £131.

*This year's St Leger is the 237th running. The race is the oldest of the Classics, founded four years before the Derby. It has been run away from Doncaster on 12 occasions: at Newmarket 1915-18 and 1942-44; at Thirsk in 1940; at Manchester in 1941; at York in 1945 and 2006; at Ayr in 1989.

*Talent would be the 42nd filly to win the St Leger. The first of the 41 to have done so was the race's first winner Allabaculia (who was un-named at the time of her victory); the most recent User Friendly in 1992.

*Talent would be the 19th winner of the Oaks to win the St Leger. The first to take both races was Queen Of Trumps in 1835; the most recent User Friendly in 1992.

*Since User Friendly won the St Leger, 15 fillies have taken part, of whom seven have been placed. They include three Oaks winners: Ramruma (2nd 1999), Look Here (3rd 2008) and Snow Fairy (4th 2010). The other fillies to have been placed since 1992 are Book At Bedtime (4th 1997), High And Low (2nd 1998), Quiff (2nd 2004) and Unsung Heroine (2nd 2008).

*There are four challengers from Ireland for this year's Ladbrokes St Leger: Leading Light and Foundry for Aidan O'Brien; Galileo Rock for David Wachman and Ralston Road for Pat Shanahan.

*There have been only seven St Leger winners trained in Ireland. The first was Ballymoss in 1957, the most recent Scorpion in 2005. Six of the Irish victors have been based at Ballydoyle: Ballymoss, Nijinsky (1970) and Boucher (1972) were trained there by Vincent O'Brien and Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion by Aidan O'Brien. The only one of the Irish winners not resident at the Co Tipperary establishment was Paddy Prendergast-trained Ragusa in 1963.

*Secret Number would be a sixth victory for Saeed Bin Suroor, which would make him joint-second on the trainers' all-time St Leger leaderboard. The 19th century figure John Scott is outstandingly the best with 16 victories between 1827 and 1862, followed by Mat Dawson, John Porter, Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and Dick Hern with six each.

*Either Secret Number (Saeed Bin Suroor), Cap O'Rushes or Libertarian (both Charlie Appleby) would be a seventh victory for Godolphin, which would make Sheikh Mohammed's operation jointly the most successful in the St Leger. The 9th Duke of Hamilton won seven between 1786 and 1814; Godolphin's six have been Classic Cliche 1995, Nedawi 1998, Mutafaweq 1999, Rule Of Law 2004, Mastery 2009 (all trained by Bin Suroor) and Encke last year (by Mahmood Al Zarooni).

*Excess Knowledge would be a fourth victory in seven runnings (and a fifth in all) for trainer John Gosden, successful with Lucarno (2007), Arctic Cosmos (2010) and Masked Marvel (2011), and earlier Shantou (1996).

*Jockeys having their first St Leger rides are James Doyle (Excess Knowledge), Liam Keniry (Havana Beat), Tadgh O'Shea (Ralston Road) and Jim Crowley (Talent). Mickael Barzalona, on Cap O'Rushes this year, won last year on Encke, his first ride in the Classic.

GOING REMAINS GOOD TO SOFT AT DONCASTER

The going remains
Good to Soft
for the second day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, DFS Ladies' Day on Thursday, September 12.

The GoingStick reading came to 6.8 at 8:30am as against 7.1 at the same time 24 hours beforehand when the going description was Good. The going became Good to Soft, following rain, after the first race yesterday.

Roderick Duncan, Clerk of the Course at Doncaster, said this morning: "We had four millimetres of rain in total yesterday. Although the rain was persistent, it was only light so the going hardly changed at all - the GoingStick readings confirm the going description.

"The course takes the rain well and four millimetres hardly makes any difference.

"We are forecast four to eight millimetres of rain tonight with a dry day to follow and there is an outside chance that there will be rain on Saturday."

FALLON ABSENT DUE TO ILLNESS

Kieren Fallon will not be riding at Doncaster this afternoon after he was taken ill with stomach pains at Kempton last night.

The former champion jockey was signed off by the doctor following his rides at Kempton and, according to his agent Gareth Owen, he will be checked out this afternoon to examine the extent of the problem.

Fallon was due to ride three horses on DFS Ladies' Day this afternoon. His ride in the DFS Handicap (5.00pm), Hot Bed, is a non-runner while his ride on West Leake Diman in the Download the Ladbrokes Bingo App Handicap will be taken by Richard Kingscote.

Silvestre de Sousa will take over on board Coquet in the DFS Park Hill Stakes.

LADBROKES MARKET MOVES

Maureen has been all the rage to land the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes (2.10pm) with Ladbrokes this afternoon and the Harrow-based firm has had to take evasive action and cut William Haggas' filly to 2/1 (from 11/4).

Cornish Path has also been popular to land the opening European Breeders' Fund Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery (1.40pm) and Henry Candy's juvenile is now a 6/1 shot (from 8/1) with Ladbrokes.

Jamie Spencer's Hard Divorce has proven to be costly in the past but punters are going in again this afternoon in the crownhotel-bawtry.com E.B.F. Maiden (3.50pm) and the two-year-old is now a 5/1 shot (from 8/1). Pupil has also been cut in the same race to 9/4 (from 5/1) though there has been a shake-up in the market due to the favourite Alpine Retreat being declared a non-runner.

Fairway To Heaven has been the best supported horse in the Download The Ladbrokes Bingo App Handicap (4.25pm) and is now 4/1 (from 6/1) with the sponsors while course specialist Thunderball has also been backed and is now 5/1 (from 7/1). However, there are seven non-runners in this race.

In the finale, the DFS Handicap (5.00pm), Conduct is now the 7/2 favourite (from 5/1) with Ladbrokes while there has also been good money for the Godolphin runner Tha'ir who is 7/1 (from 10/1). Again, there are four non-runners in this race which has led to the market being reformed several times.

Ladbrokes Market Moves:

1.40pm: 6/1 (from 8/1) Cornish Path
2.10pm: 2/1 (from 11/4) Maureen
3.50pm: 9/4 (from 5/1) Pupil; 5/1 (from 8/1) Hard Divorce
4.25pm: 4/1 (from 6/1) Fairway To Heaven; 5/1 (from 7/1) Thunderball
5.00pm: 7/2 (from 5/1) Conduct; 7/1 (from 10/1) Tha'ir

TIMES UP FOR THE CUP

Tomorrow's Doncaster Cup, sponsored for the first time this year by local firm Speedy Services, is the oldest still-surviving race in the domestic calendar. It was founded in 1766 (when George III was on the throne, Pitt the Elder was Prime Minister, Britain's first golf club was opened at Blackheath and Goldsmith's classic The Vicar Of Wakefield was published) at Cantley Common. It moved to nearby Town Moor in 10 years later and was first run at its present distance of two and a quarter miles in 1891.

Nowadays the Group Two contest is regarded as the third leg of the 'stayers' triple crown', after the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup. The last horse to win all three was Double Trigger in 1995.

Neither this year's Ascot winner Estimate, nor Goodwood winner Brown Panther, are among tomorrow's field. Two of the eight runners have contested the other two races: Colour Vision was fourth at Ascot and seventh at Goodwood and Repeater respectively 10th and 14th (last).

Last year's Doncaster Cup first and second Times Up and High Jinx are vying for favouritism this year as they renew their rivalry. Times Up, who prevailed by a neck last year to give now-retired John Dunlop his last prestige success, has not won since; in the latest of his three runs this year for his former trainer's son Ed he finished an encouraging third in last month's Lonsdale Cup at York.

High Jinx, under the care of Dunlop's Newmarket neighbour James Fanshawe, went on from Doncaster to run second in the Group One Prix du Cadran but this year has not been seen since his fourth place in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown in May.

The Town Moor finishing straight, nearly half a mile from the home turn, provides a daunting test and only nine horses have won more than one Doncaster Cup. The exceptional northern heroine Beeswing took four, in 1837 and 1840-42;  Double Trigger three in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Dual winners have been Touchstone (1835-36), Alice Hawthorne (1843-44), Vedette (1857-58), Velocity (1906-07), Agreement (1958-59), Le Moss (1979-80) and most recently Millenary, who dead-heated with Kasthari in 2004 and took the prize outright a year later.
