The lightly-raced colt
Out Of Bounds, twice a winner on a fast dirt surface in the States, showed
his versatility by making his turf debut a winning one, despite rain-softened
conditions. In the Godolphin first colours, the four-year-old son of Discreet
Cat held Gatewood by half a length in the Park Hill Hospital Conditions
Stakes. The other Godolphin runner Ocean War finished third of four.
Out Of Bounds, a tall,
imposing individual, had not raced since his third in a handicap at Meydan in
early March. "We took our time with him since Dubai," said trainer
Saeed Bin Suroor. "He's a big horse and has needed the time to develop.
He has improved physically during his break and he needed this race and will
be better for it. He handled the soft ground well enough, though faster would
probably be better. He handles the dirt and the artificial surface at Meydan
too.
"There are no
particular plans for him. We'll look for a better race for him now and
probably stick to a mile, which seems fine for him. He's a nice horse."
Rider Silvestre de Sousa
was pleased with Out Of Bounds' attitude. "He did not really enjoy the
ground," he said, "but he kept his head in front. It will give him
confidence for the next time, and he should improve."
Bin Suroor had
encouraging news of his Ladbrokes St Leger candidate Secret Number. "He
worked very well in the morning and he is ready to go," he said.
"He is a horse I have always liked and he has improved from race to
race. If the ground is good to soft it will be fine."
