The extraordinary run of
form by Roger Varian-trained horses continued as Justineo took the Crown
Hotel Scarbrough Stakes. The four-year-old was his Newmarket yard's seventh
winner from 10 runners this month; the other three finished second.
"They are now
flying like you wouldn't believe," said Varian, whose team was laid low
by a virus during July and August. "When they got ill, it was a sharp
reminder that when they're not healthy it doesn't matter how many you've got,
or how good or well-bred they are.
"But you have to
meet a situation head-on and recognise it. If there was a positive it was
that they were all affected at once and recovered at the same time, it wasn't
a bug that lingered in the yard for months.
"We had a
frustrating five or six weeks. We had to sit out York but they're fine now
and we'll hope for a good autumn."
Justineo, ridden by
William Buick, came home a length and a half clear of Masamah in the Listed
contest to make it two wins and a Group Two third (to Moviesta in the King George
Stakes at Goodwood) in three runs since returning to five furlongs.
"It took the
trainer too long to work out his trip," added Varian of the Oasis Dream
colt. "He's got better in each of his last three runs. I think he is
going the right way now; he is only four and some of these sprinters can get
quicker and better as they get stronger and I hope he will be one of
them."
Justineo made all the
running for an emphatic victory. "It's hard to judge how far you are in
front when are in front," said Buick, "but he won well."
The Group One Prix de
l'Abbaye at Longchamp next month is now on Justineo's agenda. "He's very
fast and versatile about ground," said Varian, "so we'll certainly
have a look at that race."

HARRIS
DELIGHTED WITH JUDGE 'N JURY
Trainer Ron Harris was
delighted with the run of 14/1 shot Judge 'n Jury after his gelding finished
third behind Justineo in this afternoon's Crown Hotel Bawtry Scarbrough
Stakes at Doncaster.
The nine-year-old had a
plum draw against the stands' side rail but only had two horses for company
as he blazed a trail down the near side with the majority of the field opting
to run down the centre of the course.
Although the son of
Pivotal had no answer to the winner's turn of foot in the final stages of the
race, he battled on bravely and was only just denied second place by the late
thrust of Masamah.
"He's run an
absolute cracker and we couldn't be happier for him," said Harris.
"This sort of
ground is essential to him so we'll be hoping the rain continues as there are
some nice handicaps coming up for him over the next month or so.
"We had a great
time of it last year with the weather and his two York handicaps came when
there was plenty of juice in the ground.
"It can continue to
rain all it wants - as long as it stops as soon as the season ends as we had
far too much of the stuff last year!"

DUBAI
FOR BORDERLESCOTT?
Eleven-year-old
Borderlescott ran a creditable fifth on good to soft ground in the Listed
Crown Hotel Bawtry Scarbrough Stakes today at Doncaster, having recorded a
third on good to firm in a Listed event a Beverley twelve days ago.
Trainer Robin Bastiman
said of his stable star, who had retired at the end of the 2012 season only
to come back into training this year: "It was the ground I think - he
couldn't get out of it early on but he was running on at the finish. He's
just ground dependent now.
"There aren't many
races left now, there is Newbury next week but the going will probably be the
same so he won't go, there is a race a Beverley in a fortnights time and we
might go there with him but we might take him to Dubai or somewhere - it is a
thought. He has still got it and he looks well - he thrives on it - it is
just a shame the rain came."
