ROCK SOLID ON SOFT GROUND @doncasterraces

Breton Rock relished the going at Doncaster this afternoon when running out the ready winner of the Beauty At Doncaster Handicap. The 10/1 shot hit the front a furlong from home and although he was pressed by runner-up One Word More all the way to the line, the three-year-old dug deep to record a half-a-length victory.
Ladbrokes St Leger 2012
"He loves this sort of ground and hasn't run much this season because we've had such a dry summer," said jockey Martin Lane. "He's also been gelded since his last run as he's been rearing up in the stalls in his last few races and it seems to have done the trick.

"The gelding operation has helped him at the start a lot better but I'd put this victory down to the ground rather than the fact he's been gelded. He's massively unexposed and hopefully there's more to come on this sort of ground."

Jenny Simcock, wife of trainer David, echoed Lane's thoughts and predicted a busy time for the three-year-old over the next couple of months.

"The ground is the key to this horse and it's just been too dry for him recently," said Simcock. "We decided to geld him as he was just getting a bit fractious in the stalls and he missed the kick at Goodwood last time out as he reared after the blindfold was taken off him.

"Our head lad has done a lot of work with him in the stalls and we now halter him rather than put the blindfold on and it's done him the world of good. I'll imagine he'll be busy now if the ground stays like this. There's a race for him at Newbury a week on Saturday so if it's soft, we'll head there."

TRIP KEY TO ONE WORD MORE

The ground and distance were the keys to the improved form shown by runner-up One Word More. The three-year-old had previously been unplaced in three runs since winning at Kempton in April but had been highly tried in the first two, a Group Two in Germany and the Group Three Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

"He didn't run badly last time, in a York handicap over a mile," said trainer Charlie Hills. "The drop back to seven furlongs and the easier ground seemed to do the trick, and he may have been a bit unlucky as he was slightly crossed and lost some momentum.

"We were pleased with his run and we'll look for handicaps at Newmarket for him now. The track and the autumn ground will suit."
