PUPIL EARNS TOP MARKS

Pupil, trained by Richard Hannon, showed the benefit of a previous lesson as he came top of the class in the crownhotel-bawtry.com maiden. The neatly-named colt - by Mastercraftsman out of Blue Iris - stormed past his rivals through the final furlong to take the mile contest at 4/1 by a length and a half from Double Bluff.

On his only previous run he had finished 10th of 12 at Newbury as 7/2 favourite. "He was a bit green then in a race that wasn't run to suit," said rider Richard Hughes, "but this time he knew what to do."

Ladbrokes St Leger 2012Pupil, a €130,000 yearling, may have the 10-furlong Zetland Stakes at Newmarket as his next target. "He'll be a lovely one to go to war with next year," said Richard Hannon jr. "He was always a lovely yearling but took time to come to himself and was a bit weak and disorganised first time and needed a run to sort himself out.

"But he's got a lot of scope and a good action and attitude. He looks a proper horse, and he's got a proper pedigree."

The colt's dam is a Listed-placed sprinter from the family of smart performers Swiss Lake, Swiss Spirit and Anita's Prince.

JOHNSTON SEEING DOUBLE AFTER BLUFF RUN

Double Bluff delighted connections after a very encouraging debut in which the two-year-old finished a length-and-a-half second behind winner Pupil in the crownhotel-bawtry.com EBF Maiden at Doncaster this afternoon.

The 12/1 shot cut out most of the running and stayed on strongly after hitting a flat spot and connections are now looking forward to next year with the son of Azamour.

"We're delighted with that run as we don't really wind our juveniles up too much for their debut," said Deirdre Johnston, wife of trainer Mark.

"We'll look to try and win a maiden with him this year but he'll be a much stronger horse next season. His dam was a winning half-sister to our smart stayers Double Eclipse and Double Trigger who Ron (Huggins) owned and this one looks as if he'll want a trip in time."

Connections of the third-placed horse Raven Ridge were also happy with the way their juvenile had performed in the race.

"We're very happy with that as he'll come on a lot for the run," said trainer Michael Bell.

"We'll try and find a small race for him this year but we expect him to come into his own as a three-year-old."
