LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2012, DONCASTER
STOBART DONCASTER CUP DAY, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

DEMAND STRONG FOR TOMORROW'S LADBROKES ST LEGER DAY AT DONCASTER

Doncaster Racecourse is expecting a near sell-out crowd for Camelot's Triple Crown attempt in tomorrow's Ladbrokes St Leger, the final Classic of the season.

Some areas of the racecourse are already sold out for Saturday, while strong demand is expected today and tomorrow for the remaining tickets.

Current availability at Doncaster Racecourse for Saturday, September 15, 2012
Frenchgate Family Enclosure: There are 3,500 tickets available
Grandstand: There are 1,000 tickets available
County Enclosure: SOLD OUT
Premier Suite: SOLD OUT
Premier on the Lawn: SOLD OUT

Kate Hills, on behalf of Doncaster Racecourse, said: "The Camelot factor has been very strong, with some racegoers, who would normally come earlier during the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, postponing their visit until Saturday.

"The fact that the County Enclosure, Premier Suite and Premier on the Lawn are sold out and the Grandstand is nearly sold out testifies to the desire of people to witness a moment of racing history at Doncaster tomorrow.

"We expect most, if not all, of the remaining tickets to be sold. Grandstand tickets will be available at 9am tomorrow for those coming to Doncaster Racecourse and the remaining Frenchgate Family Enclosure tickets will go on sale at 10.30am.

"The forecast is for dry weather tomorrow so hopefully conditions will be perfect for racegoers attending the 236th running of the world's oldest Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger."

There will be a major media presence at Doncaster tomorrow, with over 150 accredited for the day as against the normal 50.

Camelot's Triple Crown attempt is a worldwide phenomenon, with American, Australian, French, other European and Middle East media among those attending.

Extra media facilities have been laid on to cope with the demand.

"The forecast for tomorrow is for a dry day, with temperatures of up to 19 degrees Celsius.

"Also, the strong breeze we have experienced today should drop by tomorrow."

CROWD

LADBROKES ST LEGER MILESTONES

Victory for Camelot would make him the 16th winner of the Triple Crown (the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger) and the first since Nijinsky in 1970.  The timespan involved to this year's running is 204 years; the youngest of the three Classics, the 2,000 Guineas, was first run in 1809.

Victory for Camelot would make Aidan O'Brien the first trainer in Turf history to win all five British Classics in the same year. Camelot has won the 2,000 Guineas and Derby and his Ballydoyle stablemates Homecoming Queen the 1,000 Guineas and Was the Oaks.

Victory for Thought Worthy, Michelangelo or Dartford would make John Gosden, who won with Masked Marvel  last year and Arctic Cosmos in 2010, the first trainer to record a hat-trick since John Scott won with Don John (1838), Charles The Twelfth (1839) and  Launcelot (1840). Only three trainer hat-tricks had been achieved previously.

Victory for Thought Worthy would make William Buick the first jockey to record a hat-trick since Lester Piggott in 1972 (Nijinsky, Athens Wood, Boucher). The only other achieved was by Bill Scott on Don John (1838), Charles The Twelfth (1839) and Launcelot (1840).

Victory for Michelangelo would give Frankie Dettori a sixth success, after Classic Cliche (1995), Shantou (1996), Scorpion (2005), Sixties Icon (2006) and Conduit (2008). It would put him behind only Bill Scott (nine wins between 1821-1846), John Jackson (eight between 1791-1822) and Lester Piggott (eight between 1960-1984) on the all-time numerical list.

Victory for Thought Worthy would emulate his brother Lucarno, winner in 2009. Previously six sets of siblings have won, most recently Ribocco (1967) and Ribero (1968).

Victory for Encke would give Godolphin a sixth success as owner, after Classic Cliche (1995), Nedawi (1998), Mutafaweq (1999), Rule Of Law (2004) and Mastery (2009), and put Sheikh Mohammed's  operation joint-second on the all-time list. The most successful owner has been the 9th Duke of Hamilton with seven wins between 1786-1814. The 17th Earl of Derby and the third Aga Khan also have six wins.

Trainers with their first runners are Tommy Carmody with Ursa Major and David Lanigan with Main Sequence.

Jockeys with their first rides are Mickael Barzalona on Encke, Phillip Makin on Guarantee and Tom Queally on Thomas Chippendale.

THE TRIPLE CROWN HEROES: WHO WERE THEY?

1853 West Australian
Won his 2,000 Guineas and Derby only narrowly and was the only Triple Crown winner to start at odds against in the St Leger, which  which he won by an easy three lengths to prove himself the greatest horse of his era, his only defeat in 10 runs coming on his debut.

1865 Gladiateur
Though trained in Newmarket, he was bred in France and earned the nickname 'the Avenger of Waterloo'. One of the best Triple Crown winners, with 16 victories from 19 runs in a brilliant career, including the Ascot Gold Cup by 40 lengths at four.

1866 Lord Lyon
Scraped home in both the Derby and St Leger, in which he held on by a head from the fast-finishing Savernake, who had been badly boxed in. He was consistent, with 15 wins from 19 starts, and hardy, but was one of the lesser Triple Crown winners.

1886 Ormonde
The best racehorse of the 19th century, unbeaten in 16 races, and arguably the best Triple Crown winner. His  victories included the St James's Palace and Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Champion Stakes, at 1/100, at three and the July Cup at four.

1891 Common
The least of the Triple Crown winners, in terms of looks (he was appropriately-named), talent and durability. He raced only five times, starting in the 2,000 Guineas and was no match for the top four-year-old Surefoot in the Eclipse Stakes.

1893 Isinglass
A champion in each of his four seasons, beaten only once in 12 starts. His Triple Crown was unique in that he beat the same horse, Ravensbury, in each race. He was the only Triple Crown winner to race at five, when he won the Ascot Gold Cup.

1897 Galtee More
His St Leger starting price of 1/10 made him the shortest-priced favourite in the Classic's history, but it was not the shortest price in his; he won the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot at 1/33. He won 11 from 13, but against mostly moderate contemporaries.

1899 Flying Fox
Won nine of his 11 races, including all six at three. Was probably a lucky Derby winner as his main rival Holocauste broke a leg two furlongs out when poised for victory. When he was sold at four, his price of 37,500gns remained an auction record for 67 years.

1900 Diamond Jubilee
Named for his year of foaling, Queen Victoria's eponymous celebration. Won only six of his 16 races, making him the losingmost Triple Crown winner. Renowned for his vicious temperament, he was the best of an ordinary generation at three and failed to win at four.

1903 Rock Sand
Ran more often than any other Triple Crown winner, with 16 wins from 20. In the Classics he benefited from the absence of the best three-year-old Zinfandel and his shortcomings were exposed when he was trounced by Ard Patrick and Sceptre in the Eclipse Stakes.

1915 Pommern
Did not have to tackle the contours of Epsom or the long Doncaster straight in the wartime Classics at Newmarket, but was a high-class performer and an emphatic winner of all three. Won seven from 10 including the wartime substitute for the Coronation Cup at four.

1917 Gay Crusader
Nothing special at two but after a narrow 2,000 Guineas victory dominated his rivals at three with a series of wide-margin successes that hardly tested his considerable ability. A top-class winner of eight from 10, including the Ascot Gold Cup substitute by 15 lengths.

1918 Gainsborough
His three-year-old campaign included victory in the Ascot Gold Cup substitute and he retired as the top-class winner of five from nine. At stud earned immortality as sire of Hyperion. Died aged 30, the longest-lived Triple Crown hero, and up there with the best.

1935 Bahram
The second unbeaten Triple Crown winner, winner of nine from nine. Top-class at two, he won the St James's Palace Stakes after the Derby and produced his most impressive win as he strode five lengths clear in the St Leger.

1970 Nijinsky
A champion in both his seasons and took his unbeaten run to 11 in the St Leger. His three-year-old victories included the Irish Derby and King George, but in his last two runs he went under by a head to Sassafras in the Arc and was a dull second to Lorenzaccio in the Champion Stakes. He went on to become a great sire.

THE TRIPLE CROWN AND ITS HEROES

The Triple Crown comprises the 2,000 Guineas over Newmarket's straight mile in early May, the Derby over Epsom's switchback  mile and a half in June and the St Leger over Doncaster's sweeping extended mile and three-quarters in September. To win all three a horse must own speed, stamina, soundness and durability as well as class.

Few are capable of excelling season-long at the highest level over such a variety of courses and distances and in the 203 years since the running of the first 2,000 Guineas (the other two Classic races are older) just 15 horses have completed the set. Three of those, Pommern, Gay Crusader and Gainsborough, did not have to show the versatility required by different tracks, as their wartime races were all run at Newmarket, but they still had to demonstrate the other qualities.

Of the 2,000 Guineas and Derby winners who have attempted the Triple Crown, more have actually succeeded than failed. The most recent to succeed, Nijinsky, was the last to try. The idea that a potential stallion should demonstrate the quality of stamina has become  less popular in recent times, parallel with the expansion of the elite international calendar.

The Triple Crown races are the three of the five Classic races which are open to colts. There is also a filly Triple Crown, for a horse that wins the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. In the past this had lesser currency, as the best fillies would have been expected to run against colts at Newmarket and Epsom. But in the modern era, when fillies rarely tackle colts in the first two Classics (even though they are still eligible) the filly Triple Crown has equal status. Nine have achieved it, most recently Oh So Sharp in 1985.

A TRIPLE CROWN FOR CAMELOT, A SINGLE CROWN FOR O'BRIEN

Apart from Camelot's attempt to become the 16th colt to win a Triple Crown and the first since Nijinsky in 1970, the Ladbrokes St Leger could produce a statistic unique in Turf history. Victory in the race would make Aidan O'Brien the first trainer to win all five British Classics in a single season. Camelot has won the 2,000 Guineas and Derby and his Ballydoyle stablemates Homecoming Queen the 1,000 Guineas and Was the Oaks.

Camelot, unbeaten in five runs, will face eight rivals in the Ladbrokes St Leger on Saturday, the 236th running of the oldest and longest Classic. He will be the first Derby winner to run at Doncaster since Reference Point, who in 1987 became the 35th Derby hero (including the 15 Triple Crown winners) to win both Classics.

Camelot's class is not in doubt - his official rating of 124 puts him 9lb ahead of the next best of his rivals, Thought Worthy and Main Sequence - but he has yet to tackle further than a mile and a half. But his late sire Montjeu is one of the world's leading influences for class and stamina, already responsible for two St Leger winner in Scorpion (2005)  and Masked Marvel (2011), as well as an Ascot Gold Cup winner in Fame And Glory.

O'Brien has won three St Legers, with Milan (2001), Scorpion and Brian Boru (2003). But the trainer with the best recent record in the race is John Gosden, who first scored with Shantou in 1996 and has won three of the last five with Lucarno in 2007, Arctic Cosmos in 2010 and Masked Marvel last year. He saddles three on Saturday - Thought Worthy, Michelangelo and their pacemaker Dartford - and success would make him the first trainer to achieve the hat-trick since John Scott in 1840.

Thought Worthy is the choice of stable jockey William Buick, who will be bidding to emulate Lester Piggott, - successful on  Nijinsky, Athens Wood and Boucher - as winner of three in a row. The only other rider to achieve the feat was Bill Scott, 1838-40. Thought Worthy, by Dynaformer, is a brother to Lucarno; previously six sets of siblings have won, most recently Ribocco (1967) and Ribero (1968).

Michelangelo will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who will be going for his sixth victory. He is already the race's most successful jockey currently riding and another win would put him behind only Scott (nine wins between 1821-1846), John Jackson (eight, 1791-1822) and Piggott (eight, 1960-1984) on the all-time list.

Like Lucarno, Thought Worthy finished fourth in the Derby and warmed up for the Ladbrokes St Leger by winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes. The York race has been the best trial for the Classic in recent years, having produced nine St Leger winners since 1993.

Of those nine, Bob's Return (1993), Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno won both races. The most recent examples of horses beaten in the Great Voltigeur Stakes who turned the tables on their York conquerors to win at Doncaster have been Mastery (2nd at York to St Leger third Monitor Closely) in 2009 and Bollin Eric (3rd at York to St Leger third Bandari) in 2002.

Three behind Thought Worthy in the Great Voltigeur reoppose in the Ladbrokes St Leger, neck runner-up Main Sequence, third-placed Enke and Thomas Chippendale, fifth.

Main Sequence, a first St Leger runner for trainer David Lanigan, will be trying to become the first Derby runner-up to find compensation at Doncaster since Rule Of Law in 2004. Ursa Major, for Tommy Carmody, are other first-time runners in the Classic for their trainers.

The Godolphin operation, previously successful with Classic Cliche (1995), Nedawi (1998), Mutafaweq (1999), Rule of Law (2004) and Mastery (2009), are represented by Encke.

Race 1 - Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes - Winning Quotes

PERFECT START TO STOBART DONCASTER CUP DAY FOR TINKLER

Andrew Tinkler, CEO of today's headline sponsor the Stobart Group, enjoyed the perfect start to the day when Sir Prancealot carried his colours to victory in the five-furlong Group Two Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes.

Partnered by Johnny Murtagh, the Richard Hannon-trained colt looked to have it all to do entering the final furlong but came with a great run to get up and deny Bungleinthejungle by half a length. He was returned the 7/4 favourite.

Richard Hannon Junior, assistant trainer to his father, commented: "The horse deserved it.

"He has twice taken on Reckless Abandon this year. He ran well at Royal Ascot and then again in the Morny at Deauville, when he just got tired near the line.

"He gets six furlongs and we will now look at the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket for him. The timing of that race (October 13) is just right.

"This horse is throughly consistent, has a great attitude and is a gentleman to deal with. We came here and dropped down in trip so that we could win a Group race and I am very pleased. It's also nice for his owner Mr Tinkler, who also has Dubawi Gold with us.

"I think the horse may get seven furlongs in time but for now I think his future is over six."

Johnny Murtagh added: "He is a very professional two-year-old. He's fast, they went a good pace, he settled well, quickened up and hit the line well. Hopefully, an extra furlong won't bother him.

"He is very natural - he was quick out of the gates and he relaxed well today, which was good. I think that he might even improve for that run - he is starting to learn how to race now.

"It's hard going for two-year-olds in the head-on wind but this lad didn't seem to mind. Like all of Richard Hannon's, nothing seems to faze them.

"The ground has dried out a lot from yesterday. It's good ground now, maybe on the slow side of good, but it was good to soft yesterday so it has dried out a bit."

BUNGLE IN THE ABBAYE?

Aspirations are high for Bungle Inthejungle, caught close home and beaten half a length by Sir Prancealot in the opening Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes. "He's run a stormer," said the trainer Mick Channon's son and assistant Michael. "He's done it the hard way, gone out like a rocket in front. All the others tried to pick him off and only one could. He is just so quick.

"He's a serious prospect for next year, he's such a big scopey horse he's bound to strengthen from two to three and again from three to four and is going to give us a lot of fun in the future in the big sprints and take us to some great places. He's entered in the Abbaye and if the ground was not soft, he could take his chance against the older horses. He's already got the frame of a three-year-old."

Bungle Inthejungle, a son of Exceed And Excel, is homebred by his owners Christopher Wright and Emily Asprey.

Third-placed Sound Of Guns, the first filly home in the Group Two five-furlong dash, will not run again this year, and is also regarded as a bright emerging talent. "She's just getting better and better," said trainer Ed Walker of the daughter of Acclamation, "but we'll now put her away and look after her for next year. She's got plenty of scope - she was one of the leggiest in the race - and will make a lovely three-year-old. And she'll be even better on faster ground."

GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Johnny Murtagh, jockey of the 7/4 favourite and winner Sir Prancelot, said: "Good."

Martin Harley, on half-length second Bungle Inthejungle, said: "Good."

William Buick, rider of third Sound Of Guns, said: "Good."

Richard Kingscote, partner of Ceiling Kitty, said: "Nice fast ground."

Neil Callan, rider of Morawij, said: "Good."

Graham Gibbons, partner of Welliesinthewater, said: "Good ground and drying - it will be faster by the end of the day."
Jim Crowley, on board Girl At The Sands, said: "Good at the moment but drying."

Jamie Spencer, partner of Hoyam, said: "Good."

Race 2 - Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap - winner quotes

SIR GRAHAM UP FOR NEXT YEAR'S CUPS

Sir Graham Wade, late-thrust winner of the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap, may be back at Doncaster on the same day 12 months on with a more prestigious target.

"Our dream is that he is our Cup horse for next year," said Deidre Johnston, wife of trainer Mark, of the three-year-old. "He stays, he's brave and he's tough."

The only one of his age in the extended mile and three-quarter contest that preceded the Stobart Doncaster Cup, Sir Graham Wade pounced to score by a neck and a nose from Nanton and No Heretic.

It was the fifth win of his career, just six days after the fourth at Haydock Park. "I was very relieved it all worked out," added Johnston. "I wasn't sure about running him again so soon as he's such a lovely horse in the making, but he had lost hardly any weight and had eaten up.

"He seemed to have taken last weekend all in his stride. But then he does nothing between his races. He hasn't had a gallop since he first won earlier in the year; just eats and sleeps and ticks over at home and saves it all for the racecourse."

The grey Dalakhani colt, the 9/4 favourite, was delivered with confident inch-perfect precision by Kieren Fallon.

"I wanted to be handy but leave it late," he said. "There's a strong headwind and you don't want to be in front too long out there. But I knew I had enough horse to get there when I wanted.

"I was lucky on him at Haydock but things went better today. They didn't go a great gallop but he picked up well for me and he is a battler.

"After today, I think that he will have to step up to Group company - he has beaten some smart horses and some older horses as well. This fellow is only getting better."

Race 2 - Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap - Placed Quotes

SO CLOSE FOR VETERAN NANTON

The 10-year-old grey Nanton has been a mainstay in competitive handicaps over the past few seasons and the veteran showed he was as good as ever with a fine second in the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap over the St Leger distance of one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards at Doncaster today. Nanton had previously won this race in 2009.

Partnered by Graham Lee, Nanton came with a strong late run down the outside and almost caught Sir Graham Wade, going down by a neck. He was returned at 9/1.

Trainer Jim Goldie said: "That was a terrific run, I'm chuffed to bits. He might have got there in a few more yards.

"I don't know why, but he loves this place. There was a strong headwind today and we always knew it was going to be a tactical affair.

"He would have a great turn of foot for a three-year-old, never mind a 10-year-old!

"He could now go for the Cesarewitch at Newmarket now. He ran well in it before when he was a wee bit unlucky.

"He would also be very interesting off his current mark in the Cambridgeshire - where I think his form figures are 234 - but I think he will struggle to get in that race. He only needs a 1 to complete his form figures in the Cambridgeshire!"

CROWLEY BANNED FOR TWO DAYS

Jim Crowley was banned for two days - September 30 and October 1 - by the Doncaster stewards for careless riding on Western Prize, sixth in the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap.

The stewards found Western Prize interfered with Caravan Rolls On, William Buick's mount who  finished well to take fifth.

The stewards ruled that Crowley let Western Prize drift left towards the rail.

Race 3 - Stobart Doncaster Cup - Winning Quotes

TIMES UP WRITES THE SCRIPT PERFECTLY FOR DUNLOP

Trainer John Dunlop, who announced yesterday that he will be retiring at the end of the season, saddled the winner of today's Group Two Stobart Doncaster Cup - who was somewhat ironically named Times Up.

The consistent six-year-old, who won the Group Two Lonsdale Cup at York last time, was given a perfect ride by Eddie Ahern. Travelling well throughout, Times Up hit the front in the final furlong and kept on well to hold off the late challenge of High Jinx by a neck.

John Dunlop said of the 5/1 winner: "He was always travelling very, very  well up the straight. I was a bit worried because there was no pace - they looked to go no gallop at all for the first mile and a half and that's always a bit of a concern.

"He got very relaxed and enjoyed the track - he loves flat, left-handed courses - and he is in very good form.

"I think that we shall run him again but it is not easy to find out where. We ran in the two-mile race on Champions Day last year but he doesn't really like going right-handed on a tight track. Having said that, he only just got beaten a head at Longchamp last year, so we might go for the Prix du Cadran.

"We have won a few Doncaster Cups in the past and we have won the November Handicap here quite a few times, including with Times Up. Doncaster has been lucky for me.

"Times Up is a wonderful horse who has done us proud.

"The horse isn't getting any younger but still has some mileage in him. He certainly has more mileage in him than me!"

Speaking about his decision to retire Dunlop, who has sent out three winners of the Ladbrokes St Leger, continued: "I had been thinking about it for a while. With the current size of the string, it has become unsustainable.

"We had a bad first half to the season, but all stables go through that and it didn't affect my decision. I first thought about retiring last year and it is within the last couple of months that I made the decision to stop.

"I think it was pointed out by one of the scribes that it was somewhat ironic I was running a horse called Times Up today! Anyway, you won't be seeing the back of me for a couple of months yet. In my time in racing I've seen plenty of nightmares so it's nice to have a fairytale winner today.

"I've had lots of good days over the years. You always remember them. My sons Ed and Harry are moving forward with their training careers and I will bask in their glory."

Eddie Ahern added: "I was saying before the race that it would be fantastic if Mr Dunlop went out on a big one. They didn't go as fast as I thought they would and I was probably a little closer to the pace than normal but he travelled so well.

"It's a good buzz when you can pick your spots going to the two-pole - it's a good feeling and you know that you are going to win.

"It's a pity I didn't come to England 10 years earlier when Mr Dunlop had so many good horses!

"He has always stood by me and never jocked me off a horse. The best horses I have ridden for him are Palavacini and Elusive Pimpernel."

As well as his prize for winning the Stobart Doncaster Cup, Dunlop was also presented with a magnum of champagne by Doncaster Racecourse to mark his impending retirement.

Race 3 - Stobart Doncaster Cup - runner-up quotes

HIGH PRAISE FOR DUNLOP AND JINX

James Fanshawe, trainer of Stobart Doncaster Cup runner-up High Jinx, paid tribute to his soon-to-retire colleague John Dunlop, responsible for the neck winner Times Up.

"It is great for John to have such a good note the day after he announced he was retiring," said Fanshawe. "His record speaks for itself, all those Classic and big-race winners over such a long period of time.

"I suppose it was good that he won the race and I wish him all the best. But mind you, if I'd been the one retiring, he would have tried his hardest to win all the same. And if I'd beaten him, he wouldn't have minded."

Fanshawe was delighted with the effort of Graham Lee-ridden High Jinx, who was two lengths closer to Times Up than when the pair finished first and second in the Lonsdale Cup at York last month.

"I was really pleased with the way he switched off when there was a lack of pace early again," he said of the four-year-old. "He had learned from York and is really starting to get it all together, really improving. He's going to be an exciting prospect for next year in these big staying races."

High Jinx, by High Chaparral, may be seen again this year. "We'll see how he is," added Fanshawe,  "But he's had a fairly light campaign and either the Prix du Cadran or the Long Distance Cup at Ascot will be possibilities."

Race 4 - Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes - winner quotes

BRAVE CERTIFY TO STEP UP IN CLASS

Mahmood Al Zarooni, trainer of Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes winner Certify, was particularly pleased with the Godolphin filly's effort, given the way the race was run. "They went a bit of a slow pace which usually suits the one in front and makes if difficult for the ones coming from behind and closing, so I am really pleased with her and her attitude."

Certify beat Purr Along a head and the pair came eight lengths clear of Light Up My Life. The daughter of Elusive Quality will step up next time to Group One level, either the Shadwell Fillies' Mile at Newmarket later this month or the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp nine days later.

"The first choice would be Newmarket," said Al Zarooni, "but we will see how she recovers and if she needs more time we will wait for France."

Certify, now a best-priced 16/1 with Ladbrokes for next year's 1,000 Guineas, is now unbeaten in three and was a back-to-back winner of today's mile Group Two contest for Al Zarooni, after Lyric Of Light, and the third in a row for Godolphin, after Saeed Bin Suroor-trained White Moonstone in 2010.

"She is a really nice filly," he said of Certify, "very relaxed and professional. She has become special in her way of going at home - there was a change after she won for the first time. She began to develop confidence and to trust in herself and her ability."

Lyric Of Light went on to win the Shadwell Fillies' Mile, but flopped in this year's 1,000 Guineas and has not been seen since. "It is difficult to compare the two," added Al Zarooni, "as at the moment Certify has done the same as the other one and has yet to win a Group One. But let us hope she turns out better."

Simon Crisford, Godolphin racing manager, echoed Al Zarooni's sentiments. "It ended up as a three-furlong sprint, which worked against her," he said, "and she had to battle but Mickael [Barzalona] said she was really tough and honest in the finish."

Race 4 - Barrett Steel May Hills Stakes - Placed Quotes

SO CLOSE FOR PURR ALONG

Trainer William Muir was understandably pleased but also frustrated after 16/1 chance Purr Along went down by a head after a sustained duel with 4/6 favourite Certify in the Group Two Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes. The pair drew clear of third-placed Light Up My Life, who was a further eight lengths adrift.

Muir said: "We came here to win. We have always known she was a good filly and it was only because she was trained by William Muir that she was 16/1 today. She had already beaten the third favourite.

"She has never been an easy filly. She wasn't ready early and has had a poxy draw each time she has run.

"What I have always said is that whatever this filly does this year is a bonus because she is not a two-year-old - she is all about next year.

"She has always run the race of her life - Wolverhampton was a walk in the park, at Sandown she was hampered so badly and should have won, while at Deauville the jockey rode a brilliant race but said that is not the way to ride her. Martin said the same. The filly is so competitive.

"The form of this race looks solid as the winner had already beaten Sky Lantern, who won the Moylare last weekend.

"We are competing in the big world with this filly. If she tells me, she could maybe have another run this year either in the Rockfel or the Prix Marcel Boussac. I listen to what the horses tell me."

Race 5 - Rossington Hall Conditions Race - Winning Quotes

ASHDAN MAINTAINS PERFECT RECORD

Frankel, the world's best racehorse, won the race run this year as the Rossington Hall Conditions Race two years ago and this year it was another Khalid Abdulla-owned horse, Ashdan, that took the spoils in the seven- furlong event. The two-year-old Dansili colt has now won both his starts, having scored on debut at Newmarket last month.

Partnered by William Buick, Ashdan took a while to find his stride but once he was settled he ran on well to defeat No Jet Lag by a comfortable length and a half. He was returned the 4/5 favourite.

Trainer John Gosden said: "I ran a filly who was 10 lengths second to Frankel in this race two years ago. In fact, we were second to Frankel on both his first two starts so we decided to give up then!

"This horse just got the wind up his backside today going down to the start and took off. He hasn't done that before at home so I think it is probably the wind that has done it.

"He was just a bit keen in the race and didn't have any cover,. He is still a young horse with a lot to learn but he has won nicely in the end.

"He is well-entered up for the rest of the season, including in the Racing Post Trophy back here which is a race we could look at."

William Buick added: "I couldn't get any cover but he is a nice horse and he has done it very well. He is better than that.

"It's nice when you can go quietly with them and build them up slowly. He is a nice horse and will be a nice horse in time."

Race 6 - Willie McKay Sports Management Handicap - winner quotes

CLASSIC IN LUCK THIS TIME

Cape Classic made up for a luckless run at Haydock seven days earlier when he ran out a ready length and three-quarter winner of the Willie McKay Sports Management Handicap under Adam Beschizza. "He was drawn badly last time and I had to come wide," said the rider. "But it all went smoothly today. He's a really good traveller and won pretty easily, did it really well, and it was a higher grade race than last time, too."

Cape Classic, whose trainer William Haggas was absent, had a lead through the final furlong from the loose West Leake Diman, who had unseated his rider Graham Lee soon after leaving the stalls.

"When the horse came to go past me, I could only see his head and neck appear at first," added Beschizza, "and he seemed to be coming quickly and easily. But then I saw there was no jockey, so panic over, and he gave me a tow to the line."

Race 7 - Frank Whittle Partnership Classified Stakes - winner quotes

DICK DOUGHTY IN VICTORY

The widest smile at Doncaster today came from Rachel Hood after her homebred Dick Doughtywylie, named after a soldier who fell at Gallipoli, battled to victory in the concluding Frank Whittle Partnership Classified Stakes.

"He is tough and determined and so brave," said Hood of her equine hero, a strapping son of Oasis Dream, "but he's a big boy, and its taken a while for him to work it all out." Her pleasure was complete as she finally got to lead in a winner at Doncaster. Two years ago after Arctic Cosmos, whom she part-owned, won the St Leger, she ceded the pleasure to her partner in the horse, Robin Geffen.

The human Dick Doughty-Wylie was killed in action in the First World War engagement in the Dardanelles after securing a strategic position and was awarded a posthumous VC. For years he exchanged love letters with the writer, traveller and political officer Gertrude Bell, which is the name of the equine Dick's older half-sister, also bred and raced by Hood.

Four-year-old Dick Doughtywylie carried MP Matthew Hancock to victory in an amateurs' charity race at Newmarket last month, his first run since disappointing in handicaps in the spring. "He wasn't right then," said trainer John Gosden, Hood's husband, "but he's ok now. He's entered at Newbury next weekend, but it may be a bit soon."

Moved to Britain when still an apprentice in 1988, working for Jimmy Fitzgerald and then Lynda Ramsden in 1993. Signed to ride for Henry Cecil in 1996, and became champion jockey for the first time in 1997 with 202 wins, also winning his first two classics. Joined Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 after acrimonious split with Cecil, but suffered a bad fall at Royal Ascot that nearly ended his career, and ruled him out of the rest of the season. Replaced Jamie Spencer as Ballydoyle stable jockey in 2005, although continued to ride for Stoute when allowed. Charged with race-fixing by City of London Police in 2006, and banned from riding in Britain pending trial. Also failed drugs test in France, resulting in worldwide six month ban in the same year.
