ENCKE CAUSES 25/1 UPSET IN
LADBROKES ST LEGER
Camelot's attempt to become the
16th winner of the Triple Crown and the first for 42 years ended in
disappointment as he went down by three-quarters of a length to Godolphin's
Encke.
Encke, a 25/1 chance, benefited
from a superb Mickael Barzalona ride as he was kicked into the lead two
furlongs from home. Try as he might, Camelot was never quite getting to Encke
who responded most gamely to the urgings of his Corsican rider.
Simon Crisford, Racing Manager
for Godolphin, commented: "We are probably not going to be the most
popular winner on Town Moor today but from our point of view it was a
fantastic result, giving Godolphin its sixth St Leger success.
"Mickael Barzalona has
given the horse a superb ride and put the race to bed when he kicked on at
the two-furlong pole. There was a question about Encke's stamina, but in the
end he has stayed it well.
"Encke has a fantastic
pedigree and is a horse that has always been forward.
"We put a line through his
last run in the Voltigeur which was a false run race.
"From the furlong pole to
the finish, I thought Camelot was never getting to us.
"We may be party poopers
today but on this occasion we are happy to be party poopers. It is fantastic
result for the whole team involved with the horse."

MAHMOOD AL ZAROONI -
IT WAS SHEIKH MOHAMMED'S
DECISION TO RUN
Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al
Zarooni enjoyed his second Classic victory at Doncaster today when Encke
caused a 25/1 shock in the Ladbrokes St Leger, beating the red-hot 2/5
favourite Camelot by three-quarters of a length. Al Zarooni's previous
Classic success came with Blue Bunting in the 2011 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at
Newmarket.
The Newmarket handler
commented: "We have been trying to win this Classic. Two years ago we
ran Rewilding and last year we ran Blue Bunting who were both favourites.
Today we have won it with an outsider. Racing can be a funny game.
"It was a brilliant ride
from Mickael which I think is a sixth St Leger win for Godolphin and His
Highness (Sheikh Mohammed).
"To be honest, it was His
Highness' decision to run here today. I disagreed and thought we should not.
He was right. His Highness and I always disagree but His Highness is always
right.
"I thought Camelot would
catch us as I remembered the way he quickened in the Guineas and in the
Derby. I saw the other horses were tired and I knew Encke was tough and would
keep going.
"It is a big thing to win
a Classic - it is different to winning just any Group One race. I am thrilled
to have won my second Classic in England after Blue Bunting last year."

DELIGHTED BARZALONA
Mickael Barzalona, who
partnered the 25/1 winner Encke, commented: "I am very happy - the St
Leger is a very good race in England and this is my second Classic now.
"Encke is a very good
horse - he improved after his last run and I am very happy to win today.
"When I saw Camelot on my
inside, I preferred to go right a little bit and try to run. My horse was
very generous today.
"I kicked and asked my
horse to go and he answered very quickly. I won very nicely. Today Encke was
the best.
"I knew Camelot was behind
on the inside and could see he had difficulty navigating. I asked my horse to
go and he went very quickly. Today I won."

Encke
Encke is out of dual Group One
winner Shawanda and is a full-brother to Group Three Sandown Classic Trial
scorer Genius Beast. He made his debut in a mile maiden at Doncaster's
Ladbrokes St Leger Festival in September, 2011 and ran with plenty of credit to
take second behind subsequent Group Three runner-up Perennial at Newmarket.
The son of Kingmambo went one better on his next start in early October when
scooting clear of his rivals to win by four and half lengths under Richard
Hughes. He missed his intended engagement in the Group One Racing Post Trophy
on October 22 due to injury, after being supplemented, and did not run again
in 2011. He made a winning return to action in a 10-furlong handicap at
Sandown on July 6, before a much-improved effort in the Group Three Gordon
Stakes over 12 furlongs, when missing out to Noble Mission by a nose after a
ding-dong final furlong battle. Although he reversed the form with that rival
in the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on August 22, it wasn't
enough to see him win the 12-furlong contest as he finished two and a quarter
lengths behind Thought Worthy in third. On September 15 at Doncaster he
caused a big upset when defeating the 2/5 favourite and Triple Crown-seeking
Camelot by three-quarters of a length in the Ladbrokes St Leger, handing
Godolphin its sixth success in the world's oldest Classic.

Godolphin
Godolphin is the racing entity
of Sheikh Mohammed and other members of the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai.
Its aim is to win races worldwide. Godolphin horses benefit from Dubai's warm
winter climate. The experiment began on a small scale in the winter of 1992,
with horses enjoying the advantages of the Arabian sunshine before arriving
in Britain for the 1993 season. The Godolphin operation was formally
established in 1994, with Hilal Ibrahim as trainer, when Balanchine won the
Investec Oaks and Irish Derby. The following year, Saeed bin Suroor was
appointed as the official trainer. In 1999 and 2000, Godolphin's
two-year-olds were housed at the former Evry racecourse in France under the
care of David Loder, who in 2001 relocated to Godolphin Stables in Newmarket,
although 2003 was his last year as Godolphin's juvenile handler and he has
subsequently retired from training. Godolphin's British-based horses are
handled by Saeed bin Suroor and Mahmood Al Zarooni, who started training in
March, 2010, and enjoyed a first European Classic win with Frozen Power in
the 2010 German 2000 Guineas. Andre Fabre trains for Godolphin in France
while the US runners are overseen by Kieran McLaughlin, Tom Albertrani and
Eoin Harty. Godolphin's famous blue colours have been carried to victory in
every British Classic bar the Investec Derby, although Saeed bin Suroor did
train Lammtarra to win the premier Classic for Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum in
1995 and Godolphin claims the success. The unbeaten Lammtarra also won the
King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l'Arc De
Triomphe at Lonchamp. Godolphin ambitions, other than landing the Investec
Derby, include taking the American Triple Crown series, winning the Japan Cup
and the Melbourne Cup. Daylami led an historic 1-2-3 in the 1998
Coral-Eclipse, the first time that the same owner and trainer had the first
three in a British Group One, and Godolphin's tally of Group/Grade One wins
stands at 193. Godolphin was leading British owner in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001,
2004, 2006 and 2007 and captured an American Eclipse Award for top owner in
2007. Godolphin has won 14 British Classics: QIPCO 2,000 Guineas (1996 Mark
Of Esteem, 1999 Island Sands), QIPCO 1,000 Guineas (1998 Cape Verdi, 2002
Kazzia, 2011 Blue Bunting), Investec Oaks (1994 Balanchine, 1995 Moonshell,
2002 Kazzia), Ladbrokes St Leger (1995 Classic Cliche, 1998 Nedawi, 1999
Mutafaweq, 2004 Rule Of Law, 2009 Mastery and 2012 Encke). Other major
Group/Grade One wins include: Dubai World Cup (1999 Almutawakel, 2000 Dubai
Millennium, 2002 Street Cry, 2003 Moon Ballad, 2006 Electrocutionist, 2012
Monterosso), Irish 2,000 Guineas (2000 Bachir, 2005 Dubawi), French 2,000
Guineas (2000 Bachir, 2005 Shamardal), Irish Derby (1994 Balanchine), Irish
Oaks (2011 Blue Bunting), Breeders' Cup Turf (1999 Daylami, 2001 Fantastic
Light), Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' (2001 Tempera), King George VI &
Queen Elizabeth Stakes (1997 & 1998 Swain, 1999 Daylami, 2004 Doyen),
Irish Champion Stakes (1994 Cezanne, 1998 Swain, 1999 Daylami, 2001 Fantastic
Light, 2002 Grandera), Irish St Leger (1998, 1999 Kayf Tara), Arlington
Million (2003 Sulamani - Godolphin's 100th G1 winner), Prix du Jockey Club
(2005 Shamardal), Breeders' Cup Juvenile (2009 Vale Of York), Prix de l'Arc
de Triomphe (1995 Lammtarra, 2001 Sakhee and 2002 Marienbard).

Mahmood Al Zarooni
Mahmood Al Zarooni was born on
October 15, 1976, close to Dubai Creek and developed a passion for horses
when he started riding in the desert aged 17. He took part in some endurance
races and began working with Arab-horse trainer Rod Simpson in the mid 1990s,
progressing to become his assistant. In 1999, he joined Ali Al Raihe's stable
at Sharjah, where he began working with thoroughbreds and developed a
reputation for his skill with unruly horses. In the 2008/09 season, Sheikh
Mohammed recruited him as assistant to Mubarak bin Shafya at Al Asifa Stables
in Dubai and in 2009 he became an assistant trainer to Saeed bin Suroor at Godolphin.
Al Zarooni was appointed as a trainer for Godolphin in March, 2010, and made
an immediate impact with Calming Influence winning the Group Two Godolphin
Mile at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night. Al Zarooni is based in Newmarket for
the British turf season, at Moulton Paddocks, and saddled his first British
winner when Lion Mountain scored at Pontefract on April 28, 2010. A first
European Classic win came when Frozen Power took the Group Two German 2,000
Guineas in May, 2010, while Group One success soon followed in the same
country when Buzzword annexed that year's German Derby. In October, Biondetti
collected the Group One Premio Gran Criterium at San Siro. His first Investec
Derby runner, Rewilding, finished third and he ended a highly satisfactory first
season in Britain with 43 winners. The 2011 season began well for Al Zarooni
as Rewilding made a winning seasonal reappearance in the Group One Dubai
Sheema Classic at Meydan on March 26, while he gained a first British Classic
success with Blue Bunting in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. That filly
subsequently won the Group One Darley Irish Oaks and the Group One Darley
Yorkshire Oaks. Rewilding gave him a first Royal Ascot victory when winning
the Group One Prince Of Wales's Stakes in June, although the colt tragically
had to be put down after breaking a leg in the King George VI & Queen
Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month. This season has seen Al
Zarooni win the world's richest race, the Dubai World Cup, with Monterosso.
Yesterday he won the Group Two Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes for the second
year running with Certify and today he won his second British Classic when
Encke landed the Ladbrokes St Leger.

Mickael Barzalona
The 21-year-old Mickael
Barzalona is the hottest young riding talent in Europe. Born at Lyon on
August 3, 1991, he is the nephew of dual-purpose jockey Armand Barzalona and
grandson of Corsican trainer Christian Barzalona. He was more interested in
rugby as a child but spent four years at the French jockeys' school in
Gouvieux before joining Andre Fabre's stable, on the recommendation of
Sylvain Guillot, in 2009. His talents were quickly noticed and he started
riding Godolphin's French runners in September, 2009. He had a win on only
his second ride in Britain aboard Ocean War in a maiden at Newmarket in
April, 2011 and sensationally won the Investec Derby two months later at his
first attempt on the Fabre-trained Pour Moi, getting up in the shadows of the
post and celebrating by standing up in the saddle. In 2012, Barzalona became
a retained rider to Godolphin and landed the world's richest race for his new
employers when partnering Monterosso to victory in the Dubai World Cup at
Meydan in March. He enjoyed a dream first ride in the Ladbrokes St Leger,
partnering Encke to success at Doncaster today.

O'BRIEN RUES LACK OF PACE AS
HIS HOT FAVOURITE IS BEATEN
Aidan O'Brien, the trainer of
beaten 2/5 favourite Camelot, commented afterwards:
"My first thought is that
it was a steadily-run race and I knew straightaway, after going a couple of
furlongs, that was the case. I should have run a pacemaker or two but I
thought that the pace was going to be strong.
"The minute the gates
opened, Josesph was where he was and he couldn't do anything about it. That's
exactly where I would have wanted him to be - when he is a horse going this
distance. Joseph had to relax him and he did, but Camelot just tanked a
little bit early because the pace was steady.
"Joseph had to take his
time down the straight and wait for the gaps to come, which you would do with
Camelot anyway. When the gaps came, the winner was in probably a handier
position and was gone - when Camelot got out, he just stayed on rather than
quickened up. He quickened up in the Guineas and the Derby but that was
always liable to happen because we were running him a bit further than his
distance.
"My regret is that I
should have run a pacemaker or two and it would have made it a little bit
more straightforward because that means he would have settled a little bit
earlier, a little bit better and he might have quickened a bit more than he
did.
"That's the way it is and
well done to the winner. That's the reality of it, really.
"I am not sure where he
will go next. I thought that, if he was to stay in training next year, there
was a chance that he wouldn't run anymore but I don't know. It will be the
boys' decision."
MORE O'BRIEN QUOTES
Aidan O'Brien continued:
"Joe said Camelot was a bit fresh with him - he tanked (along) a little
bit. You have to take your time on him over a mile and six furlongs which
Joseph did.
"When Camelot got out (in
the straight) he just stayed on rather than quickened. In the Guineas and
Derby, he quickened.
"What Camelot (normally)
does is quicken - he was just staying on today - we going past our distance
and were stretching the elastic band.
"Today he was like the Guineas
run. But he still has run a great race. I would have preferred a faster pace
where he would have settled better. Camelot was tanking with Joseph the whole
way.
"No-one thinks more about
this horse than Joseph. I can see the way the race unfolded where he went and
why he was there. He had to stay creeping where he was - he could not go
pulling Camelot to the outside turning in.
"He had to keep waiting
for the gaps as they came. That is what he did. If he (Joseph) had come four
wide in the straigh,t I would have been going mad.
"How many times do I do it
and make a hash of it (running pacemakers) and then I made a hash of it by
not having any.
"I regret that - I should
have run a pacemaker or two."

JOCKEYS AFTER THE LADBROKES ST
LEGER
Joseph O'Brien, on board
Camelot, who finished second on Camelot, was too upset to comment after the
race.
Frankie Dettori, partner of
third, Michelangelo, said: "It was straightforward race and I stayed on
well for third."
Ted Durcan, rider of fifth Main
Sequence, said: "I missed the break which wasn't any help. So I ended up
last which wasn't the plan but he's run a solid race."
William Buick, jockey of sixth
Thought Worthy, said: "The ground was a bit too quick - it has dried too
much for me but he ran a good race for a long way. The race went perfectly
for him but the ground was just too quick. He ran an honest race."
Tom Queally, rider of eighth
Thomas Chipppendale, said: "I thought they might have gone a bit quicker
but no excuses."
Robert Havlin, partner of ninth
Dartford , said: "My horse led well and about half-way I had a little
look behind and Joseph (O'Brien on Camelot) was cantering. Obviously, I was
too far behind to see the finish but I don't think there were any hard luck
stories."
MIKE DILLON OF LADBROKES
Mike Dillon of the sponsors
Ladbrokes commented: "Someone else will have to try and win the Triple
Crown now.
"It was a bold move to
attempt the Triple Crown with Camelot and it was a shame it did not come off.
"It was a race - everyone
turned up and they all fancied having a go. The winner got a really
enterprising ride and won on merit.
"Let's hope someone wants
to try again next year."
MURTAGH DELIGHTED
Johnny Murtagh, on the fourth
Ursa Major, said: "He stayed on well at the end. I am delighted with
him. They went a slow early pavcce and I got tapped for toe at the top of the
hill but I am still delighted."
ENCKE THE PARTY POOPER AS
LADBROKES REFUND CAMELOT STAKES
Ladbrokes have refunded St
Leger bets struck on Camelot as a free bet of up to £20 for all their
customers.
The 2/5 favourite could only
finish runner-up to Godolphin's Encke who was returned the 25/1 winner at
Doncaster to ruin dreams of a first Triple Crown in 42 years.
And Ladbrokes had pledged on
the morning of the race to refund losing bets on Camelot as a free bet for
those customers betting up to £20.
David Williams of Ladbrokes
said: "Our customers who backed Camelot have been thrown a lifeline. The
result wasn't quite what we'd hoped for but our punters aren't out of pocket,
at least.
"Encke all but slipped off
the radar but was a worthy winner. We hope we don't have to wait another 42
years before we can get excited about the Triple Crown."
Race 1 - Harriet Powell
Handicap - Winning Quotes
MILE NO PROBLEM FOR QUICK
Godolphin was three-handed
going into the mile-long Harriet Powell Handicap, the opening race on
Ladbrokes St Leger Day, and it was Quick Wit who emerged best of the trio.
The five-year-old was partnered
by William Buick and showed an eye-catching turn of foot in the final furlong
to overhaul Anderiego and score by three-quarters of a length at 6/1. His
stablemate Invisible Man stayed on to take third.
Winning trainer Saeed bin
Suroor said: "He was dropping down to a mile today but the strong pace
suited him.
"He is a horse that can
stay a mile and a quarter and it's great to see him come back with a win.
class=Section2>
"His last piece of work
was very good and we knew he was in good form coming into the race. He is in
the Cambridgeshire but we will keep all our options open with him. He could
also head out to Dubai next year as well.
"We run Tha'ir in the Champagne
Stakes. He is a small horse but has a big heart and always tries his best.
"Soul goes in the Park
Stakes. He is in good form but I think the ground might be a bit quick for hm
today."
William Buick added:
"There was a strong pace in the race and you've got to stay a mile
really well to win here. It's good, fast ground out there today."
GOING AFTER THE FIRST
William Buick, partner of the
winner Quick Wit, said: "Good fast ground."
Daniel Tudhope, partner of
second Anderiego, said: "Good to firm and it is kicking up a bit."
Frankie Dettori, on board third
Invisible Man, said: "Perfect good ground."
Mickael Barzalona, rider of Red
Gulch, said: "Good."
Adrian Nicholls, jockey of St
Moritz, said: "Fast."
Laura Pike, on board Mabait,
said: "It is on the quick side of good."
Andrea Atzeni, jockey of Mia's
Boy said: "Quick."
Richard Hughes, rider of
Bancnuanaheireann, said: "It is quicker than good."
Martin Lane, partner of Vainglory,
said: "Good."
James Doyle, jockey of Norse
Blues, said: "Good."
Paul Hanagan, on board Jake's
Destiny, said: "It felt fairly quick to me and has dried again since
yesterday"
Race 2 - One Call Insurance
Champagne Stakes - Winning Quotes
TORONADO MAKES IT THREE FROM
THREE IN CHAMPAGNE
Toronado maintained his
unbeaten record with a game front-running performance in the Group Two One
Call Insurance Champagne Stakes.
Trained by Richard Hannon and
ridden by Richard Hughes, the 11/4 chance showed a very willing attitude as
he held off the challenge of 5/6 favourite Dundonnell to score by half a
length in the seven-furlong contest.
Richard Hannon Junior,
assistant trainer to his father, commented: "We were worried it might
not be far enough for him today so I told Richard to go out and make it a
test.
"The horse has done it the
hard way and they all had their chance to go past him. I would say he is
probably about as good a colt as we have got this year.
"All being well, he could
come back here for the Racing Post Trophy (Group One, 1m, October 27). He was
bought in France so there would be a premium if we went for the Prix Jean Luc
Lagardere, so that is another option to consider.
"He will be aimed at the
Guineas next year and maybe the Derby. Who knows, we may have a Triple Crown
horse!
"He is a very sound horse
and the ground seems no problem for him. Physically, he is as nice a horse as
you've seen."
Richard Hughes added: "I
always thought that he was a good horse. I can only go on feel but today he
proved that he was a good horse.
"I was in a Catch 22 -
this horse needs a mile but I wasn't going to go fast enough to set it up for
the rest. Although I wasn't going that fast, it wouldn't have really suited
me either.
"He has a lovely way of
galloping with a beautiful action - it's a pleasure to be on him."

NO EXCUSES FROM CHARLTON
After a middling pace early on,
a final furlong sprint saw the two market leaders fight it out for the
honours, with the 5/6 favourite Dundonnell coming off a half-length second
best to the 11/4 second favourite, Toronado, in the Group Two One Call Insurance
Champagne Stakes.
Afterwards Dundonnell's
trainer, Roger Charlton, commented: "I thought he ran very well, we were
just beaten by a better horse I guess. There are no excuses, James (Doyle,
jockey) had a big problem pulling him up - again. He went miles down the back
straight so a mile will suit and maybe a slightly better pace would help. I
thought he had every chance."
Dundonnell holds entries in the
Juddmonte Royal Lodge and the Dubai Dewhurst, both held at Newmarket, but
Charlton was non committal about the colt's next appearance. "There is
no decisions as to where he is going to run at this stage - there is no need
to rush a decision." said Charlton.
Frankie Dettori, who rode the
third home, Tha'ir, said: "It was a good race but I was third best."

DOC HAY TAKES PORTLAND IN
COURSE-RECORD TIME
Doc Hay got up in the shadows
of the post to take the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap by a neck from Face The
Problem in 1m 6.01s, a new course record for the five furlongs and 140 yards
distance at Doncaster.
The 20/1 chance was partnered
by Daniel Tudhope and the five-year-old could bid for a quick double in next
Saturday's Ayr Gold Cup.
Winning trainer David O'Meara
said: "Doc Hay has been a good horse over the past 12-18 months.
"We ran him at Haydock
last weekend when the ground was plenty quick enough for him, much quicker
than it was today.
"The Haydock run was a
prep for today which was the plan. It's brilliant that it has all worked out.
"The horse was already on
an upward curve when he joined us from Keith Dalgleish and has maintained his
progression. We just try and keep the horses as fit and happy as we can.
"He may now go for the Ayr
Gold Cup. He ran off 97 today and will get a penalty so he should get
in."
Daniel Tudhope added: "I
thought that I had won. He is such a hard horse to win with but he has run
some big races this year and has been unlucky.
"I am so delighted for the
owner - he is such a nice man and very patient. It's great to get his head in
front.
"He just got away with the
ground today. It's good to firm ground but there is no jar in it. We thought
today's distance would suit him down to a T - it was perfect."

FACE UP FOR THE CUP
A course record was what it
took to beat Jamie Osborne's charge, Face The Problem, into second place by a
neck in the extended five furlong Ladbrokes Portland Handicap, though the
trainer was still pleased with the result.
"He's run a very sound
race." said Osborne "The plan is to go to Ayr with him next
Saturday (for the Ayr Gold Cup) and we were rather hoping for the penalty of
winning a Portland on the way. That would have guaranteed us getting in. We
will have to wait till Monday now to see if I think there is still a fair
chance we will get in."
"What is pleasing about
the run is that clearly the six furlongs (of the Ayr Gold Cup) isn't going to
be beyond him - it was always a question mark in my mind."
Fifth race: The OLBG Park
Stakes

LIBRANNO HARD TO BEAT
Trainer Richard Hannon went
into the Group Two OLBG Park stakes double-handed but it was the less fancied
of his two runners, 16/1 shot Libranno, that came up with the spoils, winning
by half-a-length.
Richard Hannon Jnr,
representing his father, said afterwards: " He did it well, he's a very
good horse when he is on song. His form goes up and down but when he is on
form he is a very hard horse to beat.
"I am a bit disappointed
with Strong Suit (sent of as the 6/4 favourite and finished fourth), he was
on and off the bridle and didn't get much luck in running I thought this was
a race he could win but take nothing away from the winner, he did it very
well."
Asked as to future plans for
the winner and Strong Suit, Hannon said: I don't know about either, we will
sleep on it and speak to the owners.
"Strong Suit is going to
be stallion at some point so I will have to talk to David (Redvers, racing
manager for Quater Racing) who is in America at the moment about him. We will
talk to Libranno's owners as to future plans later."

HANNON HAS A RISING STAR
Rising Legend took the sixth race
by half-a-length on Ladbrokes St Leger day for Richard Hannon, giving the
stable a 521.75/1 treble, with Toranado and Libranno winning earlier.
Richard Hannon Jnr, assistant
to his father, said of the Rock Of Gibraltar colt: "He did it very
nicely, they went very quick and I think that suited him.
"We had said in the
paddock before the race for Richard (Hughes) to ride him handy but that all
got changed around somehow. He travelled very well and came though stongly
and got the trip well which is very important in these two-year-old
races."
Hannon was uncertain as to
Rising Legend's, who broke his maiden tag at Brighton in August, future
plans.
"We may look at the
Zetland or maybe another nursery," said Hannon, "He's a pretty
talented horse but has taken his time, his first run was very good but then
he tapered off a bit and went a bit weak. Then we had to go to Brighton to
win a race with him but now we are back here on the big day. We are very
pleased."
Seventh race: The Mollart Cox
Handicap
Win quotes
VIKING STORMS TO VICTORY
Viking Storm completed a hat
trick of wins for his connections when getting the nod in a photo-finish in
the closing race, the Mollart Cox Handicap, of the 2012 Ladbrokes St Leger
Festival.
Harry Dunlop, who trains the
four-year-old gelding, said: "He is a horse who is very much on the up
and today he had a difficult position. I thought for a minute he might not
get out. Paul (Hanagan, jockey) said they went very hard early on and that he
almost couldn't lay up with them. Then he got into a bad pocket but got out
of it with his bit of class.
"He loves the fast ground
which why he hasn't run as much as he could have, having said that he has won
four for us. Not many do!
"As to his future plans it
is very much a case of see what the handicapper does to him. He adores the
dirt and he is very effective on it. I have always talked about taking him to
Dubai if he was ever good enough.
"He's given a everybody a
lot of fun and he's capped of a really good season for us, the best season we
have ever had."
CAMELOT THE FOCUS WITH TRIPLE
CROWN BID AT DONCASTER BUT THERE ARE DOUBTERS
Camelot is pictured bursting
through flames, alongside an excalibur engraved with his name in a dramatic
Racing Post front page montage. The headline is "Camelot on the brink of
history", with the following text: "It has been 42 years since
Nijinsky won the Triple Crown. We thought it wouldn't happen again, but now
Aidan O'Brien's 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner can join the giants in today's
Ladbrokes St Leger".
The national newspapers cannot
quite rival the Post's level of St Leger coverage but most make a decent
attempt. The Daily Telegraph leads off its sport supplement with a large
front page picture of Camelot, with the headline "Crowning Glory -
Camelot aims for place among Racing Legends".
The Daily Telegraph tags
exclusive Paul Hayward's interview, featured on the next page, with trainer
Aidan O'Brien who is quoted: "He's an incredible talent, really. One of
those very special horses, one that only comes once in a lifetime."
On the opposite page, J A
McGrath puts his slant on Camelot's Triple Crown attempt: "In terms of
achievement in the athletic arena, the closest human equivalent would be
asking Usain Bolt to line up in the 800 metres, having hacked up in the 100m
and 200m."
The Times devotes the back page
of its sport's section to the Triple Crown bid. Alan Lee has an interview
with O'Brien and his 19-year-old son Joseph who rides Camelot at Doncaster
today.
Lee wrote: "It will not be
a betting opportunity that brings a sell-out crowd of more than 30,000 to
this gritty part of South Yorkshire. It will be the prospect of witnessing
something few of us expected to see again."
Rob Wright of The Times tips
Thought Worthy to upset Camelot, while Chris Cook, writing in The Guardian
says Guarantee makes the most appeal.
The Guardian's racing coverage
features in the middle page spread of the paper's sports section, with main
correspondent Greg Wood's article headlined "How the horse with a
mystical name can fulfil the quest of a lifetime".
The Independent's Chris McGrath
reminds that, while there have been 15 previous Triple Crown winners, no
trainer has ever before won all five British Classics in the same year.
O'Brien has captured two with Camelot, the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby, while
he was also successful with Homecoming Queen in the 1,000 Guineas and Was in
the Oaks.
The Daily Star's Starform
racing insert, which terms itself Britain's Number One Racing Pullout, puts
its Ladbrokes St Leger verdict on the front - Camelot to win from Ursa Major
and Main Sequence third. Inside there is a Lester Piggott exclusive from
Patrick Weaver, while Times Up's success in yesterday's Stobart Doncaster Cup
for trainer John Dunlop, who announced his retirement the day before, is
highlighted by Tony Lewis. Mark Winstanley tips Thomas Chippendale in the
Ladbrokes St Leger.
Meanwhile, in The Sun's
Favourite racing section there is another Lester Piggott exclusive,
correspondent Claude Duval's interview with the legendary former jockey who
partnered Nijinsky to victory in the 1970 St Leger. Piggott is quoted:
"I won the 1970 St Leger in a canter. Like Camelot, Nijinsky had beaten
most of his rivals before. It will be the same story again (today)."
Duval also has interviews with Aidan and Joseph O'Brien inside.
The Daily Mail's racing
correspondent Marcus Townend ended his lead item by writing: "Some argue
the Triple Crown is an outdated irrelevance but if Camelot can make history,
he will be far better remembered in 50 years than next month's Arc hero,
unless that is also him."
The Daily Express's racing
coverage is limited to two pages, with just three paragraphs of editorial.
Two paragraphs are devoted to Dunlop's Stobart Doncaster Cup victory, with
Camelot's Triple Crown attempt mentioned at the end.
The Daily Mirror Racing pullout
is all for Camelot and the headline says "The History Boys". The
exploits of Camelot and Nijinsky are compared inside.
Jamie Reid in the FT Weekend's
colour magazine says the St Leger is back in the fashionable fray.
"Famous old races can drift in and out of fashion just like flared
trousers and platform-heeled shoes. Take the St Leger, for example. This
afternoon the 236th running of the oldest classic in the calendar will take
place at Doncaster, and there's high excitement that it will culminate in a
moment of racing history."
The Yorkshire Post has done
racing proud each day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, thanks to
comprehensive coverage, mostly by Tom Richmond. Today's edition of the
broadsheet daily features interviews with Aidan and Joseph O'Brien conducted
by Richmond in Ireland on Monday.
Finally, the alternative racing
Saturday paper, Racing Plus, devotes its first five pages to asking whether
Camelot can follow in the footsteps of Nijinsky.
DONCASTER ON LADBROKES ST LEGER
DAY 2012 IS A SELL-OUT
The remaining tickets for the
Grandstand and the Frenchgate Family Enclosure available at Doncaster
Racecourse today, totalling nearly 3,500, have all been snapped up and
Ladbrokes St Leger Day is a sell-out.
This means there are
approximately 32,000 racegoers at Doncaster today to witness an historic
Ladbrokes St Leger in which the unbeaten Camelot goes for the Triple Crown
after victories in the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and the Investec Derby.
Kate Hills, on behalf of
Doncaster Racecourse, commented: "We were always confident that today
would be a sell-out.
"It is great that so many
people are here for the final day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival to
witness what should be a tremendous 236th running of the world's old
Classic."

The going for the fourth and
final day of the 2012 Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, Ladbrokes St Leger Day, is
now:
GOOD, GOOD TO FIRM IN PLACES
(Previously Good at the end of
Friday's racing)
Jon Pullin, Clerk of the Course
at Doncaster, reported this morning: "We had a dry night and the going
is now good, good to firm in places.
"Today is forecast to stay
dry with temperatures set to reach 19 degrees Celsius and the strong breeze
we experienced yesterday has dropped.
"The ground may quicken a
bit throughout the day although I don't expect the going description to
change at this stage.
"We are set fair for what
will hopefully be a historic Ladbrokes St Leger Day at Doncaster."

A FABULOUS WEEK SO FAR ON TOWN
MOOR
Everyone is hoping that the
2012 Ladbrokes St Leger Festival concludes in perfect fashion today with
Camelot becoming the 16th winner of the Triple Crown after the first three
days of the meeting provided some magic moments.
The action kicked off on Wednesday
with Welcome To Yorkshire Day, the centrepiece of which was the Clipper
Logistics Leger Legends Classified Stakes. The mile contest saw riding stars
of the past take to the saddle once again and it was two St Leger-winning
jockeys who fought out the dramatic finish with 53-year-old Mick Kinane
getting the better of 65-year-old George Duffield by a nose. Most
importantly, the contest has already raised over £100,000 for the two
nominated charities, the Injured Jockeys Fund Jack Berry House in Malton and
the Northern Racing College, Doncaster. Donations can still be made online at
www.justgiving.com/northernracingcollege
Wednesday also saw a welcome
return to the winner's enclosure for the 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes victor Sole
Power in the Listed Scarbrough Stakes. After that confidence-boosting
success, the five-year-old is set for another international campaign, taking
in France, Hong Kong and Dubai. Proud Chieftan provided a good story
following his victory in the Kat Communications Knowledge About Telecoms
Conditions Stakes as his trainer, Cliff Lines, was at Doncaster 50 years ago
to lead up the 1962 St Leger hero Hethersett.
It was DFS Ladies Day on
Thursday and the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Wild Coco was an impressive winner
of the 'fillies' St Leger, the DFS Park Hill Stakes. Sunday Times caused a
22/1 upset in the day's other Group race, the Group Three Japan Racing
Association Sceptre Stakes, while the richest race of the day, the Weatherbys
Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, went to the only filly in the race, 11/4
favourite The Gold Cheongsam. The latter's jockey, Liverpool-born Franny
Norton, dedicated his victory to the 96 people who died in the Hillsborough
disaster.
Yesterday was Stobart Doncaster
Cup Day and proceedings began perfectly for the CEO of the headline sponsor,
Andrew Tinkler, when his Sir Prancealot took the opening Group Two Polypipe
Flying Childers Stakes. Sir Graham Wade has been one of the season's
progressive handicappers and he rewarded favourite backers when taking the
ultra-competitive Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap.
John Dunlop, one of the most
successful trainers in Britain during his 47-year career, announced on
Thursday that he is to retire at the end of the season and the
ironically-named Times Up gave him perhaps his last big-race winner in the
Group Two Stobart Doncaster Cup on Friday. The Arundel-based handler has
always been a big supporter of Doncaster and saddled three winners of the
Ladbrokes St Leger - Moon Madness (1986), Silver Patriarch (1997) and
Millenary (2000). Dunlop was presented with a magnum of champagne by the
Doncaster executive in recognition of his retirement.
The Group Two Barrett Steel May
Hill Stakes went to Godolphin for the third successive year with the unbeaten
Certify battling to a brave head victory over Purr Along. She looks a leading
fancy for Classic honours in 2013.
Frankel, the world's best
racehorse, won the contest now run as the Rossington Hall Conditions Race two
years ago and in 2012 it was another Khalid Abdullah-trained horse, Ashdan,
that took the spoils. Trained by John Gosden, the unbeaten Dansili colt could
possibly return to Town Moor for the Racing Post Trophy on October 27.

BRACE OF GROUP TWO CONTESTS ADD
TO AN HISTORIC DAY
Today's racing on Ladbrokes St
Leger day isn't all about the world's oldest Classic and the historic attempt
by Camelot to emulate the greats of old, with two cracking Group Two contests
also on offer.
The first of the Group races is
the Group Two One Call Insurance Champagne Stakes due off at 2.25pm. First
run in 1823, it is a two-year-old race for colts and geldings with classic
aspirations. Previous winners include Grundy ('74), Wollow ('75), Rodrigo De
Trianno ('91) and Poet's Voice ('09).
This year's renewal sees a
field of five contest the seven furlongs of Town Moor with the Richard
Hannon-trained Toronado, who is quoted at 25/1 for next year's Inverstec
Derby, expected to be well supported. Ladbrokes quote 11/4 about the High
Chaparral colt. Another horse of significant interest is the Roger
Charlton-trained Dundonnell, who took the Group Three Acomb Stakes at York
last time out, and is evens favourite with Ladbrokes
The other Group Two on offer is
the OLBG Park Stakes which follows the Ladbrokes St Leger on the card at
4.15pm. It is is also run over seven furlongs and open to three-year-olds and
upwards of either sex. The OLBG Park Stakes was first run in 1978 with Tap On
Wood ('79), Known Fact ('80), and dual winner Iffraaj ('05, '06) being among
those to grace the winner's enclosure.
This year there are eight
declared with Pastoral Player an interesting prospect. He won the Group Three
Timeform Jury Stakes at Haydock back in June for Hughie Morrison, who also
trained the five-year-old's sire, Pastoral Pursuits, to win the race in 2004.
He is 8/1 with Ladbrokes. Another leading fancy is the multiple Group winner
Strong Suit (2/1 with Ladbrokes), who is looking to bounce back after a
disappointing seventh in the Haydock Sprint Cup last weekend, and there is
also Foxtrot Romeo, who was second in this year's Irish 2,000 Guineas on the
Curragh and is hoping to improve on his fifth-place in the Group Two Lennox
Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on his last start. He is 8/1 with Ladbrokes.
