MIJHAAR'S BETFRED CAMBRIDGESHIRE BID

Mijhaar (9st 5lb) could bid for a deserved success in the £160,000 Betfred Cambridgeshire Handicap, run over nine furlongs at Newmarket on Saturday, September 29, 2012.

The four-year-old, trained by Roger Varian, was one of the ante-post favourites for last year's renewal until a training setback forced him to miss the race and the rest of the season.

The son of Shirocco returned to the racecourse after 10 months off when finishing third in the Listed Betfred Hambleton Handicap over a mile at York in May, and ran another pleasing race when third in the Listed Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot, beaten half a length.

On his latest start, Mijhaar started favourite for the John Smith's Cup at York but luck in running was against him and after stumbling he finished 15th.

Varian, who trains at Kremlin House Stables in Newmarket, said: "Mijhaar is a possible for the Betfred Cambridgeshire but he wouldn't be a runner on fast ground.

"He is in good form. The ground was too fast for him at Sandown (on September 1 when he was withdrawn) as he is a horse who wants good to soft or good ground. He wouldn't mind it softer than that but he doesn't want firm in the going description.

"He could run in the September Stakes at the weekend. He is relaxing better now as he gets older and at Kempton he might get a mile and a half.

"He ran two very good races earlier on in the season but he was unlucky at York when he clipped heels and that cost him all chance. It happened three furlongs out so it's too early to say what would have happened but he was going very well.

"I think he would have gone close that day.

"He is a big strong horse and I wouldn't be worried about running him under a big weight - he can cope with it."

Mijhaar is rated a 20/1 chance by Betfred, while Danadana (9st 10lb) and Chil The Kite (8st 7lb) head the market at 14/1.

The heritage handicap could also feature David Simcock's Trade Storm (9st 5lb), who captured a competitive handicap at York on August 23. He may clash again with Strictly Silver (8st 2lb), Indian Jack (8st 3lb) and Navajo Chief (9st 6lb), who finished second, third and fourth respectively on the Knavesmire.

Other notable contenders include William Haggas' Mukhadram (8st 11lb), who finished fourth in the Group Three Tercentary Stakes at Royal Ascot and John Smith's Cup hero King's Warrior (9st 2lb).

BETFRED CESAREWITCH OPTION FOR OLYMPIAD

Olympiad (8st 10lb) could attempt to give owner Sir Robert Ogden his first success in the £160,000 Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap, run at Newmarket over two and a quarter miles on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

The Dermot Weld-trainer four-year-old made it two from three this season when capturing a competitive two-mile handicap at York on August 22 by one and a half lengths under Pat Smullen.

The son of Galileo had previously finished third in a hotly-contested handicap at Galway over a mile and a half on August 3 after breaking his maiden tag at Gowran Park on soft ground in April.

Barry Simpson, racing manager to Sir Robert Ogden, said: "It's nothing more than an entry at the moment as Olympiad does have the choice of a Listed race in Ireland which we will give consideration to as well.

"He will only have one more run this season so it's just a question of where we really want to go with him but he is a possible for the Betfred Cesarewitch.

"He has been in great form since his win at York and we have been very happy with him. He is a big horse and he has taken his time getting there but he has refined down into a lovely individual.

"It's interesting on pedigree because he is related to an Irish 1,000 Guineas winner so you wouldn't think two miles will be his trip. I wasn't surprised by how well he did it at York because we knew he was a horse with talent, but it's like all these things, having talent at home and doing it on the racecourse are two different things.

"I think he will get the two and a quarter miles at Newmarket as once you have won at two miles and are running over those sort of trips, stamina isn't normally a problem.

"I don't think ground is an issue with him. He probably wouldn't want to run on extremes but he won on fast ground at York and ran well on very soft ground at Galway under a big weight."

Olympiad is one of three co-favourites with Motivado (9st 3lb) and Aidan O'Brien's I Have A Dream (8st 4lb) at 10/1 with race sponsor Betfred.

Other leading entries include David Simcock's Ascot handicap scorer Montaser (7st 11lb) and David Lanigan's Melrose Handicap runner-up Biographer who has been allotted 8st 1lb.

Others of note include Ed Dunlop's talented four-year-old Romeo Montague (8st 7lb), who won decisively at Ascot over two miles in July before slipping up in the Goodwood Stakes which was won by Mark Johnston's Hurricane Higgins (8st 13lb).

TOP CLASS ENTRIES IN NAYEF JOEL STAKES

A total of 41 entries have been received for the £100,000 Group Two Nayef Joel Stakes, run at Newmarket over a mile on Friday, September 28, 2012, day two of the Cambridgeshire Meeting.

The entries are headed by Godolphin's Farhh, who has chased home Frankel on his past two starts, in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes on August 1 and the Juddmonte International on August 22, both Group Ones.

Brian Meehan could run Group One St James's Palace Stakes hero Most Improved and Archbishop, who finished second to Master Of Hounds in the Group Two International Topaki Trophy on Sunday.

Newmarket handler Chris Wall may saddle stable star Premio Loco after he gained the biggest success of his career when winning the Group Two Celebration Mile at Goodwood on August 24.

Tullius has been given an entry by trainer Andrew Balding after his success in the Group Three Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury on August 16.

Balding said: "We are looking at the Nayef Joel Stakes for Tullius and he has been very well since his win at Salisbury.

"He is a nice horse and the form of his Sovereign Stakes win has been franked. I have been very happy with his progress this season and he deserves a crack at a race like this.

"He has got a very good attitude and he keeps pulling it out. He has a strange head carriage but it doesn't seem to stop him going forward and digging deep."

Other notable entries include Roger Varian's talented Aljamaaheer, and Afsare, who finished second in the Grade One Arlington Million Stakes on August 18.

The Nayef Joel Stakes is part of the QIPCO British Champion Series.
