CANARY ROW ON SONG AHEAD OF NEWMARKET TEST

Canary Row, trained in Ireland by Patrick Prendergast, is among eight runners for the £40,000 Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes (3.40pm) over seven furlongs at Newmarket on Thursday, September 27, the first day of the Cambridgeshire Festival.

The son of Holy Roman Emperor was a length and a quarter behind Dawn Approach in second when they clashed in the first two-year-old maiden of the European Flat season at the Curragh in March, before winning in good style over five furlongs at Tipperary on May 3.

He found Dawn Approach five and a half lengths too strong in a six-furlong conditions race at Naas two weeks later and returned from a lengthy absence to finish fourth behind Battle Of Marengo in the Listed Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Trial Stakes over a mile at Leopardstown on September 8.

Prendergast, based in Co Kildare, said: "Canary Row is in very good form. He has some good, solid form in Ireland and he is a tough little horse.

"I gather there might be some more rain at Newmarket and that won't bother him because he won his maiden on heavy ground but he won't mind it better either - he ran well in a nice race at Leopardstown on good to firm.

"I would expect him to improve a little bit from his run at Leopardstown because he was returning from a break. We gave have him a rest because he had a busy spring.

"It's hard to knock Dawn Approach's form and we are a good bit behind him but we have been second to him twice and he seems to have the beating of everything at the moment.

"I am hopeful of a very good run from Canary Row and I would be delighted if he was in the first three."

William Buick has been booked to ride Canary Row.

Champion trainer Richard Hannon would appear to have a strong hand with recent Listed winner Havana Gold heading his two-pronged assault alongside impressive maiden scorer Glean, who finished second in a conditions race at Salisbury on September 6.

Clive Cox will saddle Group Three Sirenia Stakes third Well Acquainted, while Charlie Hills will be hoping Ebn Arab can return to form that saw him capture his maiden by five lengths after a fourth-placed finish in the Group Three Acomb Stakes at York.

The field is completed by Mick Channon's Italian Group Three winner Chilworth Icon, unbeaten Doncaster novice stakes winner Unsinkable, trained by Richard Fahey, and John Ryan's Ocean Applause.

Newmarket's eight-race card on Thursday also features the £33,000 Listed Princess Royal Richard Hambro EBF Stakes (3.10pm) over a mile and a half for fillies and mares. A total of 15 runners will go to post headed by Group Two winner Sea Of Heartbreak, Alain de Royer-Dupre's Group Three runner-up Jehannedarc and dual Listed scorer Set To Music, owned by The Queen.

The other feature is the £33,000 Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (4.15pm) which sees 13 runners go to post. Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin have a strong hand in the two-mile contest. Group One winner Cavalryman and high-class performer Lost In The Moment are being tested prior to possible Melbourne Cup challenges, while 2009 Betfred Cesarewitch hero Darley Sun is their third runner. Other notable runners include Andrew Balding's Listed winner Chiberta King and 2010 Betfred Cesarewitch victor Aaim To Prosper, trained by Brian Meehan.

The Cambridgeshire Festival at Newmarket continues on Friday, September 28 with Shadwell Day and on Saturday, September 29 with Betfred Cambridgeshire Day.
