QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES UPDATE - FRIDAY, 7 SEPTEMBER, 2012

TODAY'S RACE:
THE BETFRED SPRINT CUP, HAYDOCK PARK, 3.25PM SATURDAY (8 SEPTEMBER) - SPRINT
  • The winners of two earlier five-furlong QIPCO British Champions Series sprints dominate the market for the six-furlong Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock Park tomorrow, race six in the division. Bated Breath won the opening race, the betfred.com Temple Stakes, also at Haydock Park, while Ortensia won the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, race five in the division, at York last month. Bated Breath, a close second in the Betfred Sprint Cup last year, was also runner-up in the second sprint, the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

  • The line-up also features Society Rock, winner of the 2011 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, race three in the division in which he was a somewhat unlucky fifth behind Black Caviar this year, and high class seven-furlong horse/miler, Strong Suit.

  • William Buick has ridden the winner of the last two QIPCO British Champions Series races - Ortensia in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and Times Up in the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup - and if he wins or finishes second on Ortensia tomorrow, he will overhaul the long-time Jockey of the Series table leader, Joseph O'Brien, and head racing's elite jockeys' championship for the first time. Third place tomorrow would put him level with O'Brien.

  • Joseph's father, Aidan, retains a sizeable lead in the Trainer of the Series table on 170 points, 45 points clear of John Gosden. Neither has a runner in tomorrow's race

The Betfred Sprint Cup is the 27th race overall in the QIPCO British Champions Series and the sixth in the Sprint division:

1. Betfred.com Temple Stakes (5f, 3yo+), Haydock Park, Saturday 26 May - won by BATED BREATH
