LADBROKES EASE CAMELOT TO 2/5 AFTER NINE DECLARED TO RUN IN LADBROKES ST LEGER
Ladbrokes now bet 2/5 Camelot, 8/1 Main Sequence, 8/1 Thought Worthy, 12/1 Michelangelo, 14/1 Guarantee, 16/1 Ursa Major, 25/1 Thomas Chippendale, 33 Encke, 250/1 Dartford. David Williams of Ladbrokes commented: "The reason that we have eased Camelot to 2/5 is because the Ladbrokes St Leger is a fantastic race for each-way punters with nine runners and we expect most of the business from now on to be each-way bets. "Camelot is trading at the biggest odds seen since mid-summer."
THE TRIPLE CROWN AND ITS HEROES
The Triple Crown comprises the 2,000 Guineas over Newmarket's straight mile in early May, the Derby over Epsom's switchback mile and a half in June and the St Leger over Doncaster's sweeping extended mile and three-quarters in September. To win all three a horse must own speed, stamina, soundness and durability as well as class.
Few are capable of excelling season-long at the highest level over such a variety of courses and distances and in the 203 years since the running of the first 2,000 Guineas (the other two Classic races are older) just 15 horses have completed the set. Three of those, Pommern, Gay Crusader and Gainsborough, did not have to show the versatility required by different tracks, as their wartime races were all run at Newmarket, but they still had to demonstrate the other qualities.
Of the 2,000 Guineas and Derby winners who have attempted the Triple Crown, more have actually succeeded than failed. The most recent to succeed, Nijinsky, was the last to try. The idea that a potential stallion should demonstrate the quality of stamina has become less popular in recent times, parallel with the expansion of the elite international calendar.
The Triple Crown races are the three of the five Classic races which are open to colts. There is also a filly Triple Crown, for a horse that wins the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. In the past this had lesser currency, as the best fillies would have been expected to run against colts at Newmarket and Epsom. But in the modern era, when fillies rarely tackle colts in the first two Classics (even though they are still eligible) the filly Triple Crown has equal status. Nine have achieved it, most recently Oh So Sharp in 1985.

A TRIPLE CROWN FOR CAMELOT, A SINGLE CROWN FOR O'BRIEN
Apart from Camelot's attempt to become the 16th colt to win a Triple Crown and the first since Nijinsky in 1970, the Ladbrokes St Leger could produce a statistic unique in Turf history. Victory in the race would make Aidan O'Brien the first trainer to win all five British Classics in a single season. Camelot has won the 2,000 Guineas and Derby and his Ballydoyle stablemates Homecoming Queen the 1,000 Guineas and Was the Oaks.
Camelot, unbeaten in five runs, will face eight rivals in the Ladbrokes St Leger on Saturday, the 236thrunning of the oldest and longest Classic. He will be the first Derby winner to run at Doncaster since Reference Point, who in 1987 became the 35th Derby hero (including the 15 Triple Crown winners) to win both Classics.
Camelot's class is not in doubt - his official rating of 124 puts him 9lb ahead of the next best of his rivals, Thought Worthy and Main Sequence - but he has yet to tackle further than a mile and a half. But his late sire Montjeu is one of the world's leading influences for class and stamina, already responsible for two St Leger winner in Scorpion (2005) and Masked Marvel (2011), as well as an Ascot

Gold Cup winner in Fame And Glory.
O'Brien has won three St Legers, with Milan (2001), Scorpion and Brian Boru (2003). But the trainer with the best recent record in the race is John Gosden, who first scored with Shantou in 1996 and has won three of the last five with Lucarno in 2007, Arctic Cosmos in 2010 and Masked Marvel last year. He saddles three on Saturday - Thought Worthy, Michelangelo and their pacemaker Dartford - and success would make him the first trainer to achieve the hat-trick since John Scott in 1840.
Thought Worthy is the choice of stable jockey William Buick, who will be bidding to emulate Lester Piggott, - successful on Nijinsky, Athens Wood and Boucher - as winner of three in a row. The only other rider to achieve the feat was Bill Scott, 1838-40. Thought Worthy, by Dynaformer, is a brother to Lucarno; previously six sets of siblings have won, most recently Ribocco (1967) and Ribero (1968).
Michelangelo will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who will be going for his sixth victory. He is already the race's most successful jockey currently riding and another win would put him behind only Scott (nine wins between 1821-1846), John Jackson (eight, 1791-1822) and Piggott (eight, 1960-1984) on the all-time list.
Like Lucarno, Thought Worthy finished fourth in the Derby and warmed up for the Ladbrokes St Leger by winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes. The York race has been the best trial for the Classic in recent years, having produced nine St Leger winners since 1993.
Of those nine, Bob's Return (1993), Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno won both races. The most recent examples of horses beaten in the Great Voltigeur Stakes who turned the tables on their York conquerors to win at Doncaster have been Mastery (2nd at York to St Leger third Monitor Closely) in 2009 and Bollin Eric (3rd at York to St Leger third Bandari) in 2002.
Three behind Thought Worthy in the Great Voltigeur reoppose in the Ladbrokes St Leger, neck runner-up Main Sequence, third-placed Enke and Thomas Chippendale, fifth.
Main Sequence, a first St Leger runner for trainer David Lanigan, will be trying to become the first Derby runner-up to find compensation at Doncaster since Rule Of Law in 2004. Guarantee, for William Haggas, and Ursa Major, for Tommy Carmody, are other first-time runners in the Classic for their trainers.
The Godolphin operation, previously successful with Classic Cliche (1995), Nedawi (1998), Mutafaweq (1999), Rule of Law (2004) and Mastery (2009), are represented by Encke.
JOHN DUNLOP PRESENTATION AT DONCASTER TOMORROW
John Dunlop has announced he will retire at the end of the season from a training career which has spanned 47 years.
Doncaster Racecourse will make a presentation to Dunlop tomorrow to mark his achievements at the home of the final Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger.
The trainer has enjoyed three St Leger winners - Millenary in 2000, Silver Patriarch in 1997 and Moon Madness in 1986 - and had plenty of other success at Doncaster.
Dunlop saddles Times Up in tomorrow's Group Two Stobart Doncaster Cup, a race he won with Millenary in both 2005 and 2004 (dead-heat with Kasthari).
JOHN DUNLOP, OBE, FACTFILE
Born at Tetbury, Gloucestershire on July 10, 1939, John Dunlop, the son of a doctor, is one of Britain's longest-serving and most respected trainers, having first taken out a licence in 1966. He had a two-year apprenticeship with Neville Dent and Gordon Smyth before he was asked to take over the reins at the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk's Castle Stables in Arundel, West Sussex, from where he started this season with 67 horses in training. Black Satin's 1970 Irish 1,000 Guineas success established Dunlop as a trainer of rare quality. He has since landed 10 English Classics, including Investec Derby victories with Shirley Heights in 1978 and Erhaab in 1994, and narrowly failed to add a third to his portfolio in 1997 when Silver Patriarch was beaten a short-head by Benny The Dip, although the same horse provided him with some consolation later in the season when lifting the final Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger. He again saddled the Derby runner-up in 2000 with Sakhee and had the third, Let The Lion Roar, in 2004. Champion trainer in 1995, he had his first Investec Oaks success with Sir Robin McAlpine's Circus Plume in 1984. He has since enjoyed the fruitful support of owner Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained the owner's Salsabil to win the 1990 Investec Oaks, QIPCO 1,000 Guineas and Irish Derby. Together they have recorded multiple Group One glories with Bahri (1995 St James's Palace Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes), Marju (1991 St James's Palace Stakes) and Lahib (1992 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes). He also trained Millenary to win 11 Group races over six seasons, including the 2000 Ladbrokes St Leger. That was his third winner of the Doncaster Classic, with his first having come from Moon Madness in 1986. His other QIPCO 1,000 Guineas wins, besides Salsabil's, came through Quick as Lightning (1980) and Shadayid (1991). He sent out Sheikh Mohammed's first winner - Hatta who won at Brighton on June 20, 1977. Dunlop was rushed to hospital after the normally fatal rupture of his aorta in November, 2001, but made a full recovery. He was until recently a director of Goodwood Racecourse, his local track. His sons Ed and Harry are both trainers. He has been responsible for 74 Group One winners among nearly 300 Group successes. His total winning tally is over 3,500.
He told the Racing Post today: "It's been a wonderful innings but all good things come to an end. I told my owners at the start of the day and obviously we are all a bit sad but there have been some great days, particularly Ragstone's Gold Cup, the two Derby winners and in this week my three St Leger winners at Doncaster, where I will be going tomorrow. I do want to thank all the owners who have supported me and my staff, a lot of whom have been with me a very long time. I hope we have made a little contribution towards the game over the years and I am very proud to have two sons continuing training."
The Press Association had quotes from Dunlop as well: "I can confirm that I'll be retiring at the end of the current Flat turf season. There are several reasons behind the decision. I now have much reduced stable numbers and it is now less viable than it once was. My wife has also been ill for quite a while as well, so that has been a factor and I can also now live in the shadow of my very successful sons. I talked to the staff this morning and my owners yesterday and today."

Clerk of the Course Jon Pullin reported: "Some of the jockeys reported that the ground was a bit dead after the first couple of races. It was not as warm today as had been forecast and I am leaving the going description overnight as good, good to soft in places.
"Tomorrow is predicted to be dry. There is the chance of a light shower which should not amount to anything significant. Temperatures should reach 18 degrees Celsius which should help the ground dry out a bit.
"Conditions on Saturday should be dry, with temperatures warming up to around 20 degrees Celsius. If the forecast is correct, we should hopefully be racing on good ground on Saturday, Ladbrokes St Leger Day."

"We are forecast a dry day today, with temperatures of up to 18 degrees Celsius.
"Friday and Saturday are also forecast to be dry with temperatures of between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. There is a chance of a shower on Friday, but if this does arrive it should only be minimal."

JAMESBO'S GIRL TAKES THE OPENER
Jamesbo's Girl was the game winner of the opening race on DFS Ladies Day, taking the extended six-furlong EBF Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery by three-quarters of a length. The 8/1 hope was partnered by Paul Hanagan for trainer Richard Fahey.
Richard Fahey said: "She's really tough.
"Her owner (Philip Rolls) is really enthusiastic and I think the horse even has her own website now.
"It was her owner who claimed her. He's obviously a good judge and if he wants to claim some more horses and send them to me, that would be great!
"Today was the target really. It sounds silly now, but at one stage I thought she might struggle to get in but in the end she finished up fourth top-weight.
"We'll get her home and think of what do next."
Paul Hanagan added: "She is not very big but she is very, very tough indeed. We took her to Goodwood and that was a hot race as well - most of it is down to her being so genuine.
"The ground is just a bit tacky today, it has dried up a lot. It's not as bad as yesterday."
Sara Cumani said of the runner-up Nargys: "We are very pleased.
"The only thing Jamie [Spencer, rider] said he would have liked to have changed was the ground as he felt it was a bit dead. She's much better on real top of the ground.
"But she is a lovely filly for next year with bags of scope. We liked her from the moment we saw her as a yearling."
Race 2 - Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes GroupThree - winner quotes
SUNDAY TIMES IT RIGHT ON THURSDAY
After a low-key season, Sunday Times bounced back to her best juvenile form and promise with a sparkling victory in the Group Three Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes.
The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor was a close second in the Cheveley Park Stakes and took her chance in the 1,000 Guineas in the spring, but in retrospect her trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam regrets running Allan Belshaw's filly in the Classic.
"It bottomed her," he said. "If you look at the race, she's travelling as well as anything two furlongs out. But she doesn't stay a mile in the best company and the race completely flattened her.
"And because of that, her season has been a write-off until now. We shouldn't really have run her in the Guineas, but the owner had never had a runner in it and wanted to have a go, and we shouldn't have run her in the soft again at Warwick in June.
"The Guineas took everything off her but she's had a good holiday, turned out in the cage at home, just messing about. I told Jamie [Spencer, rider] to take his time as they might go off a bit fast and come back and fall in his lap. But I thought maybe fourth or fifth - the plan had been to get her ready for a Listed race in a couple of weeks. We'll have to think again now."
There is the possibility that Sunday Times may stay in training next year. "Now she's won her Group Three I'd maybe say no," added Chapple-Hyam, "especially as there's not that much for a seven-furlong filly. But her owner is a sportsman and likes to see his horses run."
Spencer added: "Peter thought she might just need it, being her first run back. She ran very well in the 1,000 Guineas - she didn't like the going but made up a lot of ground to get into nearly second and then didn't get home.
"She was second in the Cheveley Park Stakes last year, so she had the form if she came back to it.
"We split up with Johnny (Murtagh) on one side and, when that happens, everyone races each other so we got racing way too far out. She travels well and I wasn't even travelling where I was, so they were going to stop in front at some stage."
Race 2 - Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes - Placed Quotes
GODOLPHIN HAPPY WITH IMPROVED SHOWING FROM GAMILATI
Gamilati started the year well with two victories at Meydan, Dubai, including the Listed UAE 1,000 Guineas.
The daughter of Bernadini had not shown a great deal of sparkle on her comeback when 10th in a Group Three contest at Glorious Goodwood but returned to form at Doncaster today when runner-up in the Group Three Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes.
Partnered by Mickael Barzalona for trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, the three-year-old led in the final furlong before being overhauled by Sunday Times, going down by a length.
Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, commented: "Gamilati has run well today and it was pleasing to see a much better performance than on her previous outing.
"There are no specific plans for her but we will try and look for something at a similar level."
Race 3 - Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes - Winning Quotes
CHEONGSAM BAGS THE GOLD
The Gold Cheongsam may have been the only filly to line-up in the 21-runner Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes but the Red Clubs filly saw off all comers to register a gutsy neck success in the hands of Franny Norton and gain the lucrative first prize of £162,306.
Returned the 11/4 favourite, The Gold Cheongsam (who is named after a traditional type of oriental dress) has now won three of her five starts.
Winning trainer Jeremy Noseda is currently at the Keeneland Sales in America but winning owner, Singapore-based Arashan Ali, was present and he said: "All credit must go to Jeremy Noseda and his team - they are the ones who make it all possible. We just come along and enjoy the racing.
"I have had some good horses in the past. The best was probably Rich Vein, who unfortunately got injured while I had Richest Vein and Fiveoclock Express. This filly could be the best.
"I don't know we will go next - I will leave all decisions to Jeremy."
Franny Norton added: "I wanted this race so badly today because of all the news we have had about the Hillsborough disaster. That was for them today, that was for the 96. I would just like to dedicate that victory to them.
"They were coming at me in the end, I could feel them, and I was just praying and shouting for that line. Anyway the line came and class prevailed.
"I am not connected to too many Group horses, so I will leave running plans to others. I am just grateful for today."
Race 3 - The Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-y-o Stakes - runner-up quotes
HAJAM OFF TO REDCAR
66/1 chance Hajam, narrowly beaten in the Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, provided a fine payday for his connections with his £82,793 runner-up prize. But trainer James Tate regretted what might have been and nearly was. "It was a great run," he said, "but I wish he'd been a neck better. Or maybe that his sire was less popular."
Tate was referring in the last instance to the conditions of the race, in which the weights carried are determined by the median price achieved by each horse's sire at the yearling sales. Hajam, homebred by his owners Rabbah Bloodstock, is by Exceed And Excel, and carried 15lb more than the winner The Gold Cheongsam, by Red Clubs.
"He's the best horse in the race," added Tate. "We've always liked him and he did have some Group oNE entries, but he had a growing sPurt and went a bit weak so we scratched him. But I'd like to think he'd be Group class next year."
In the shorter term, Hajam is bound for the Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar in October. "It's a stiff uphill six and that will suit him well," said Tate, "and I think he'll be better off at the weights there."
Race 4 - DFS Park Hill Stakes Group Two - winner quotes
TOM JUST WILD ABOUT COCO
Rider Tom Queally praised his mount Wild Coco's battling qualities after she powered through the field to overhaul clear leader Estimate in the straight and win the Group Two DFS Park Hill Stakes by a length and a quarter. "She stays well," he said, "and my main concern was that I didn't want to get stopped in my run. I wanted to keep her gallop tempo going; if I'd had to go back down through the gears it might have been a struggle to get up and going again.
"She's tough and a battler and she showed that as she got to the other filly and then rallied all the way to the line."
Wild Coco, a four-year-old daughter of Shirocco, is the first horse her breeders Gestut Rottgen have had in training with Sir Henry Cecil, who was not present at Doncaster. The German nursery, founded in 1924 by Peter Muhlens, is based near Cologne.
Wild Coco is from the stud's 'W' line of mares, which has produced from another branch the top-class two-mile chaser Well Chief. Gestut Rottgen's 'A' family is responsible for another Park Hill Stakes heroine in Anna Of Saxony, winner in 1993 for Sheikh Mohammed.
"Wild Coco is the stud's 113th Group winner," said bloodstock adviser Jocelyn de Moubray. "And we hope to add another when her half-sister Wildrossel [by Dalakhani] runs in the German St Leger on Sunday."
The DFS Park Hill Stakes, over the St Leger course and distance, is the world's most prestigious staying contest restricted to fillies and mares. "The idea of sending horses to Sir Henry Cecil was to show that the stud's products can compete in some of the best international races," added de Moubray. "Sir Henry always thought Wild Coco was good and there was the possibility that she might have run in the St Leger itself last year. But she was not mature enough, so he put her away and gave her time, and she has proved herself worth his patience and judgement this year."
Race 4 - DFS Park Hill Stakes - Placed Quotes
HILLS AND WARREN PLEASED
It was a blanket finish to the DFS Park Hill Stakes and connections of the two placed fillies were both very satisfied.
Charlie Hills, trainer of the fast-finishing length and a quarter runner-up Hazel Lavery, said: "I am very pleased.
"She is a filly we have always thought a lot of and she got the trip really well today - the track obviously suited her.
"I think there is a Group Two race she could go for in France which we will look at. She is also in the December sales but I'd like to keep her if at all possible."

John Warren, racing manager to The Queen, said: "Estimate has run another really nice race.
"I think she definitely needs further - all she does is stay and she was just tapped for toe over a mile and six furlongs today.
"For her next outing, whether that be this year or next year, we will definitely be looking to step her back up in trip.
"Hopefully, she can develop into a Cup horse for next year."

GLENARD OVERCOMES INEXPERIENCE
Lambourn handler Charlie Hills has his horses in fine form at the moment and he enjoyed a second winner at the 2012 Ladbrokes St Leger Festival when Glenard landed the crownhotel-bawtry Irish EBF Maiden over a mile.
Partnered by Michael Hills, the two-year-old Arch colt, a 14/1 chance, had it all to do entering the final furlong but kept on strongly to take the spoils by a short-head from Sicur.
Charlie Hills said: "The horses are just coming back into form, which is great. He was very green, he's quite babyish but he is a horse who we have always liked. He has done pretty well to come and win from where he was.
"He has a lovely action but I thought that he would come on for today's run mentally more than anything.
"We will see how he comes out of the race and he will tell us what he is up for. He is in the Derby next year but he hasn't got any fancy entries this season. We will go nice and steady with him and there is obviously something like the Autumn Stakes for him."
Michael Hills added: "He was very green. I was coming with a nice run but I had to wait to drop the hammer to give him a chance to get up and win.
"There was the Godolphin horse zig-zagging in front and I thought that I had got there too late but the other horse ducked. I think that, if I had got the clean run I wanted, I would have beaten them anyhow.
"He is big and raw - he was fancying everything down at the start - and he had got a lot to learn but they don't win unless they have got talent."

Before today, Amadeus Wolfe Tone had run nine of his 11 races over seven furlongs or more. But after speeding home at a well-backed 9/2 in the Ladbrokes Bingo Handicap over six furlongs, the gelding will be sticking to the shorter distance. "He's a decent horse," said trainer Jamie Osborne, "but he's one of those odd ones who had lured me down the seven-furlong route.
"He's a half-brother to a horse that ran in last year's Leger, Census. But I just had a hunch that dropping him back to six would be the answer. This is his trip and he won't be plying his trade over anything else from now on."
Next stop for the three-year-old will be Ayr on Saturday week. "The penalty he gets for today should get him into the Silver Cup," added Osborne, "and as long as the ground is not too soft, that's where he'll go."
Amadeus Wolfe Tone was Lambourn-based Osborne's 35th winner of the campaign. "This one is a quality horse and one of our better ones," said Osborne, "but things are going pretty well. It's all about being realistic about how good your horses are and putting them in the right company."
The three-year-old was a second winner of the day, after Sunday Times, for Jamie Spencer. "He was always cruising," said the rider, "but I was glad when the small group he was in did merge with the main group. He has loads of boot but he wouldn't want it soft."

BLACK SHOWS PLENTY OF SPIRIT
Black Spirit bounced back from an injury sustained at Royal Ascot to take the DFS Handicap. The five-year-old damaged a tendon in finishing a neck second to Gatewood in the Wolferton Handicap, and had not run since, but gained fine compensation in today's 10-furlong finale to win for the first time since July 2010 and the third time in all.
"It was a nasty injury," said trainer Clive Cox, "which accounts for his absence since June, and this was a nice prize that he thoroughly deserved. Things have been tough for him ratings-wise since he won at Sandown as a three-year-old, but he's always shown up well, and in some good races.
"Today was the step up he needed to make after what happened at Ascot. It's made it a good day at the office."
Cox will consider the Cambridgeshire for Black Spirit but Alan Spence's gelding, currently a 20/1 shot for the Newmarket contest, will probably not run. "I think it would be a tough ask with his penalty for today," he said. "I should think we'll regroup and look for other options."
Black Spirit was ridden, as in all five of his races this year, by Adam Kirby. "He's a joy to ride," said the jockey. "He's straightforward and tough and helps you all the way."
