Trainer
Mark Johnston saddled the first three in the Keltbray Shergar Cup Classic, and
the result saw a change at the top in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup team and
individual competitions.
Gerald
Mosse now leads the Silver Saddle competition after winning this contest on
Royal Skies, moving his personal total to 36 points, five clear of early leader
James Doyle. At the same time Mosse's 15 points for victory took Europe ahead
of Great Britain and Ireland, the scores being 58 points against 56 points. The
Rest of the World team failed to score, but remains third on 28 points, six
ahead of The Girls.
Mosse
seemed surprised to find himself and his team at the head of the tables,
saying: "Ooh, am I top - that's good. We never give up. We're not yet at
the winning post, but I'm glad to be in front. My horse led all the way and tried
really hard."
Royal
Skies has an entry in York's Great Voltigeur Stakes, but Johnston said he was
unlikely to run in that Group Two contest. He said: "Of the five I ran
most people would have thought Broughton and Bushel had the best chance, not
Royal Skies. It's hard to say it's tactical, but Gerald has stayed out of
trouble up front and Kieren [Fallon, on runner-up Bushel] has been forced wide
and then switched back in, which may have cost him. Keeping out of trouble is
clearly a good idea.
"Royal
Skies ran disappointingly at Goodwood and they said he didn't stay in the
Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot when we expected him to stay. He was not the
in-form horse of our five.
"I
have to be blunt about it - I come to this meeting for the money - with just 10
runners in a race I cannot resist it."
EUROPE
EDGES GBI
Trainer Mark Johnston
saddled five runners and had the first three - Royal Skies (Gerald Mosse -
EUR), Bushel (Kieren Fallon - GBI) and Statutory (Andrasch Starke - EUR).
Fallon bemoaned his luck
in the race: "I was trapped deep all the way."
Starke was pleased that
his team, Europe, has taken the lead in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup - 58 to
56 for GBI.
The German said:
"Statutory ran a great race despite missing the start a little bit. Then I
had to stay behind but he finished very strong.
"We may have gone
into the lead but there are still two races to go."

BANS FOR
JOCKEYS
Highland Castle, the third
in the Redcentric Shergar Cup Stayers and ridden by Cathy Gannon, was found to
have interfered with the fourth Oriental Fox, drifting right into the whip, and
it improved Highland Castle's placing. The stewards suspended her for four days
- August 24 to 27 inclusive.
In the same race, the
stewards judged that Lisa Allpress, on the sixth Broxbourne, had used her whip
above the permitted level and without allowing sufficient time for her mount to
respond. They suspended her for seven days - August 24 to 30 inclusive.
In the following race, the
Barclays Shergar Cup Dash, the stewards found that Joao Moreira on the winner
Ahtoug had drifted left and interfered with the third Swan Song. He was found
guilty of careless riding and received a one-day ban - Saturday, August 24.
ALLPRESS
CONTINUES TO PRESS THE GIRLS TOTAL
Lisa Allpress continued to
keep the Girls total ticking over with fourth place on Prairie Ranger in the
Keltbray Shergar Cup Classic, adding a further five points to raise their tally
to 22 points. This was after third place and seven points in the third race;
though the Girls are still propping up the table.
Allpress, who is currently
doing all the scoring for the Girls, commented: "The rest of the
girls better get with me I have only got one more ride!"
Allpress added: "That
was nice horse and I think you will see a bit more of him - he probably wants
the ground to have a bit more dampness in it - the distance was lovely, he
might even get a bit further."
James Doyle, who picked up
three points for his fifth place on the Roger Varian trained Ducab, for Team
Great Britain & Ireland, said: "It was a shocking race really, I might
as well have just handed it to Gerald (Mosse, jockey of the winner) on a plate.
"I got stuck behind
Lisa (Allpress, jockey of the fourth), I ran straight up behind her when she
came over from a wide draw and put the brakes on. I didn't get a great trip
through after that. Still, I nicked a few points."
