BROUGHTON BATTLES FOR NORTON @Goodwood_Races

After a typically rough-and-tumble handicap at Goodwood, Franny Norton paid tribute to the battling qualities of his mount Broughton, three quarters of a length winner of the Glorious meeting's third day opener, the Gordon's Handicap.

"I went for a danger run down the far side, to get the better ground," he said, "and I got caught in a bit of a pocket. And he got me out of it, he likes all that argy-bargy through horses.

"I love this horse," added Norton, who has ridden the colt in all bar one of his races this year. "He's come a long way in quite a short time. He's got a nice turn of foot and he's tough and genuine.

"You can't underestimate Mr Johnston's horses - they can flop one week and go and win their next three starts.

"I took a daring run down the inside because it looked nice and fresh when I walked the track earlier. Paul (Hanagan) had other ideas, so the horse got me out of a bit of bother.

"Riding for Mr Johnston helps because it gives you a lot of confidence. When you look at my rides, I am getting rides from trainers who wouldn't give me one at the start of the year, so I must be doing something right."

Broughton has now won three of his six races this year. The only time he has been out of the first two as three-year-old was on his previous outing, a sixth at Ascot last month, with Joe Fanning in the saddle.

"He's still quite immature," said trainer Mark Johnston of the son of Teofilo, "so he can be excused. We've thrown quite a lot at him in a short space of time. But he's done it very well today.

"He is a big baby of a horse and he is proving to be two steps forward, one step back. He has been a little bit in and out and maybe not always shown his best. He will get better.

"He has done really well today - he has tried one run up the rail, it hasn't worked and he has come round and back again. He has shown that he do it when the chips are down.

"There has been a bit of debate about whether he gets a mile and a half and that has possibly made it more difficult. I still don't know and we won't know until a rider goes out there and rides him with the confidence that he gets a mile and a half.

"We have no doubt over a mile and a quarter but the jury is still out with regards to a mile and a half. We have no immediate thoughts for him but he might just sneak into the mile and a half race at the Shergar Cup next weekend."

Broughton was Johnston's 59th Glorious Goodwood winner.
