Mark Johnston not only
trained UBS Goodwood Handicap winner Broxbourne but also celebrated as the
part-owner and joint-breeder of the mare.
"I put together the
Ready To Run partnership but think we only sold eight or nine of the 20 shares
so I have the rest," said Johnston. "We bred her with Luke
Lillingston on a foal share and her sire Refuse To Bend was a bit flat so we
ended up buying her in for €8,000 as a yearling.
"She was leased to
the Racegoers' Club then we put her through Doncaster sales in November when
she only made £3,000 and we bought her back again.
"It's only latterly
that we have stepped her up to these extreme distances and that has been the
key with her. She could possibly head to the Shergar Cup and the Cesarewitch
could be a possibility."
Winning rider Joe Fanning
added: "She's very game. She doesn't travel great early on but she stays
all day.
"They went an even
gallop all the way. Once I straightened up, I always thought I'd nearly get
there, she stays very well and she did it well
"She ran very well at
Ascot the other day run, so fair play to her for coming back so quickly and
winning again.
"The ground is very
similar to yesterday. Good to soft ground I'd say is right."
LIEUTENANT
MILLER AIMED AT BETFRED CESAREWITCH
Lieutenant Miller finished
second, beaten half a length, to Broxbourne in the UBS Goodwood Handicap over
two miles and five furlongs, the opening race on day two of Glorious Goodwood.
The seven-year-old,
trained by Nicky Henderson for a Henry Ponsonby syndicate, had beaten the
winner by a length and a quarter when they were first and second in a Doncaster
two-mile handicap on April 26.
This time the order was
reversed but Ponsonby was delighted with his horse.
He said: "Lieutenant
Miller has run a good race again after finishing third in the Ascot Handicap at
Royal Ascot.
"He will have a short
break and then go straight to the Betfred Cesarewitch (at Newmarket on October
12).
"He is an
unbelievable horse. How he got beaten in two bumpers, ridden by McCoy and
Geraghty, we will never know - he wasn't in the first five in either of
them!"
