It has been another
marvellous Glorious Goodwood for trainer Richard Hannon and his stable jockey
Richard Hughes.
They notched up their
eighth and seventh successes of the week respectively when Pether's Moon, owned
by John Manley, was the impressive winner of £50,000 RAC Handicap under joint
second top-weight of 9st 3lb.
The three-year-old Dylan
Thomas colt was described by Hannon as a future Cup horse.
He said: "He is a
lovely horse - we have always liked him ever since we saw him at the sales.
"He could make up
into a Cup horse one day. He won't do too much this year. He is in the Ebor but
won't run there. He will go for a Listed race or Group Three.
"We were a bit
worried about the track but he has done it well. He is a horse in the making,
when he gets stronger as a four-year-old, he is going to be a very good horse.
"Hughesie said the
horse did not like Newmarket last time - running about with him.
"He has franked the
form with the other two today. I thought Hughesie was going to get shut in
again but he found a way out again - it is not good for the ticker.
"We have had our
share of winners but it would be lovely to see the filly (Sky Lantern) win the
next."
Hughes, celebrating his
149th Goodwood winner and 49th success at Glorious Goodwood, added: "I had
to sacrifice my position to get his head down. I didn't fancy going in behind
Martin Dwyer but you don't win any race pulling for a mile and a half, so I had
to do what I had to do.
"He looked long and
big at the gap. He's not very agile but he stuck his head down well in the end.
I knew at Newmarket, when he was off the bridle seven furlongs out, that the
course didn't suit him."
JOHNSTON
FINDS SOME SALVATION IN SALUTATION
Middleham-based
trainer Mark Johnston ran three horses in the RAC Handicap, although the race
proved a curate's egg of good and disappointing.
The good
came from runner-up Salutation, who stuck on gamely after leading for much of
the way along the home straight, and finished one and a quarter lengths behind
winner Pether's Moon. Back in third, beaten a further half length, was Havana
Cooler from Luca Cumani's yard.
Royal
Skies, who ran well in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot and was gambled on this
morning, took sixth, but Pitchoun dropped away to finish last of the nine
runners. All three Johnston representatives carried the colours of Sheikh
Hamdan bin Mohammed.
Johnston
said: "Salutation ran very well, Pitchoun was very disappointing and you
have to ask why he was rated 90 after winning a very moderate race [at Bath]
earlier this season - he probably needs to come down two classes - and Royal
Skies was a little disappointing given the way he has been performing.
"Salutation
[who was ridden by Silvestre De Sousa] is versatile regarding the ground, so we
have no excuses on that one."
