Richard Hughes is bearing down on his 150th winner at Goodwood and his 50th
at Glorious Goodwood. He has struck 148 times at the course (including 48
at Glorious Goodwood) and has a full book of seven rides today, headlined
by QIPCO 1000 Guineas heroine Sky Lantern in the Group One Markel
Insurance Nassau Stakes (3.15pm).
- Top-weight Hoof
It and Hawkeyethenoo are bidding to become the first dual winner of the
Robins Farm Racing Stewards' Cup (3.50pm) since Sky Diver captured
back-to-back renewals in 1967 and 1968. Hoof It triumphed under the welter
burden of 10st in 2011 and if successful today, will be only the third
horse to regain the Stewards' Cup crown and the first since Golden Rod
(1910 and 1912).
- Hot
Snap will attempt to emulate her half-sister Midday in this afternoon's
Nassau Stakes. Midday, also owned by Khalid Abdullah and ridden by Tom
Queally, is the most successful mare in Nassau Stakes history, annexing
the £200,000 contest in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for legendary trainer Sir
Henry Cecil. Hot Snap is trained by his widow Jane.
- Roger Varian is chasing his first
Goodwood winner. The Newmarket handler has saddled 36 runners at the track
without success, but that could change with Ambivalent in the Nassau
Stakes. The daughter of Authorized, who will be partnered by in-form pilot
Johnny Murtagh, landed the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh on
her latest outing.
