Third 12 months ago in the
Robins Farm Racing Stewards' Sprint Handicap, the Clive Cox-trained Seeking
Magic went two places better today.
Ridden by 5lb claimer Ryan
Tate, Seeking Magic scored for a syndicate of owners known as The Seekers from
stall 27. The second and third came from stalls 24 and 21 respectively, giving
a hint to what might happen in the Robins Farm Racing Stewards' Cup at 3.50pm.
This first race was a
consolation event for horses who failed to make the cut in the bigger contest,
and Cox admitted: "I was a bit disappointed he didn't get into the main
event, but I'm very happy to win this."
Cox, who runs his
top-class sprinter Lethal Force in tomorrow's Prix Maurice de Gheest, said of
Seeking Magic: "He's very talented but not the easiest at home, and credit
to Steve Harris who rides him in his work. Ryan is riding very well and is good
value for his 5lb claim, so the whole thing has come together really well
today.
"There was a small
mistake before the race in that Ryan weighed out with a stirrup missing from
his saddle - jockeys are riding at different tracks and these things happen -
so we had to run back in and resaddle. All's well that ends well - Ryan's
showing confidence and the horses are in great form. After this horse's last
run we gave him a break at a stud to freshen him up for this and he came back
really well.
"It's very sweet to
have any winner at this track, and all the owners are here today - they are a
great supporting cast - so it promises to be another late night.
"I'm off to France in
the morning, and Lethal Force has travelled over very well. I believe the
ground has walked well and he's there in good nick. He's drawn nine which I
hope won't be a problem, and he doesn't have to lead. He just has to find
rhythm, and he won the Hungerford Stakes over seven furlongs, which is why we
have gone for another race like that rather than dropping back to five
furlongs."
NOSE
ANGUISH OF GRIFFITHS AND PROBERT
Take Cover, beaten a nose
by Seeking Magic, looked the winner of the £35,000 Robins Farm Racing Sprint
Handicap in the final furlong only to be pipped in the last stride.
The six-year-old, making
his seasonal debut after 262 days off the track, is trained by David Griffiths
for Norcroft Park Stud.
His rider David Probert,
comforted by the owners, said: "I thought I was going to hold on."
Griffths added: "He
is a serious horse and has run well on his first start for eight months. David
said he hung across the course a bit.
"I think he was
unlucky, just beaten a nose. He needs softer ground really. We walked the
course before racing and thought the ground was OK to run on.
"He was my first
runner at Glorious Goodwood. He looks a real Ayr Gold Cup horse now but he may
need to win to get in that race. He is on 89 so we will try and find a race for
him if there is suitable ground."
Chooseday was three
quarters of a length back in third. The four-year-old kept on well inside the
final furlong and pleased trainer Kevin Ryan who said: "I am delighted. He
finished well and was closing on the first two. He is likely to go straight to
the Ayr Silver Cup."
