Kieren Fallon, having his
first ride on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup day, maintained the lead for GBI in
the international jockeys' team competition when successful on Nine Realms in
driving finish.
His 15 points, and James
Doyle's three for finishing fifth, mean that GBI has 33 points with the second
team, EUR, on 24.
Fallon gave the Ed
Dunlop-trained Nine Realms a determined ride and prevailed in a driving finish,
scoring by a neck Mutual Regard.
The Irishman, who is now
third in the race for the Silver Saddle, said: "I was further back than I
wanted to be - I wanted to be handy but got shuffled back.
"Early on there was
no pace but I was lucky enough to be able to creep into the race and get the
position I wanted to be in before I turned for home - just behind the leaders.
"It was all up to him
then - he was very tough in the finish and wanted to win.
"That false rail
would be better if it was a bit closer to the two-marker because it's not far
out and they are going back in again, which is only going to cause
problems."
Dunlop said: "For a
very slowly-run two-mile race, Kieren rode fantastically. It was the first time
he had ridden the horse but remembered him when Nine Realms won previously and
his mount finished second.
"He said beforehand
that he needed to be close because there was no pace in the race and he
was right. The horse has shown a lot of determination today. Well done GBI.
"We will see how he
takes this race before considering York. If he had not come here, we would have
gone to York."
MOSSE
HOLDS MUTUAL
IN HIGH
REGARD
Britain
and Ireland extended its lead when Kieren Fallon won this staying race on
Homeric, but Gerald Mosse kept Europe in touch when finishing second on Mutual
Regard.
Trained
by Sir Mark Prescott, Mutual Regard picked up 10 points for his rider, whose
European team reached a total of 24 points, nine behind the leaders. Mosse
moved into second in the individual jockeys' race for the Silver Saddle, his 17
points being one fewer than James Doyle.
Cathy
Gannon finished third on Highland Castle, but her horse was demoted a place
after hanging across in front of the fourth home Oriental Fox, ridden by Ioritz
Mendizabal. He gained seven points for Europe, while Gannon's five points gave
The Girls a total of ten, and they still trail the field.
Mosse,
whose mount was beaten a neck, said: "That was a long way but he ran very
well and I was pleased with him. He tried hard and stayed on right to the line.
It's good to get some points for the team."
Gannon,
whose mount pulled hard and made the early running, then stayed on valiantly in
the home straight to take third, subsequently dropped to fourth. She said of
her ride on Highland Castle: "I was told to make the early running if the
pace wasn't strong enough - he's a lovely horse and ran well. He really tried
in the final furlongs."
ORIENTAL
WOULD HAVE WON
After an initial fourth
placed ride on Oriental Fox, which was changed to third in the stewards' room
after the race, Ioritz Mendizabel, was upset not to have won the second race on
the card, the Redcentric Shergar Cup Stayers at the 2013 Dubai Duty Free
Shergar Cup.
Mendizabel, who gained
seven points to add to Team Europe's total, commented: "I had a very good
ride until four hundred metres before the line when my horse was stopped. If I
hadn't had a problem I would have won - before that I had a very good race - he
is a very good horse and I have enjoyed my first two rides at Ascot
today."
James Doyle, rider of
Rawaki for Team Great Britain & Ireland and who picked up three points for
his fifth place, said: "He ran a cracker - I got a bit hampered on the
first bend and ended up a bit far back - but I am happy enough. They went a
steady tempo and he stayed on well into fifth."
