CANDY SWEET ON VALONIA @Goodwood_Races

Valonia may have cost trainer Henry Candy only 5,500gns as a yearling but she looks a juvenile with a big future after winning the Markel Insurance Fillies' Maiden.

"I couldn't sell her on because nobody liked her sire. She was a bit of a strange-looking beast but was obviously able to run" said Candy. "After she'd done a couple of bits of work I wasn't very keen on parting with her. I put her in the Cheveley Park Stakes and didn't spend all that money on an entry fee for fun! She'll have one race before that, probably either in the Lowther or at Ayr.

"She was very green when she hit the front today. Dane (O'Neill) had planned to hold her up a bit more but it's hard to do that at Goodwood. The others never left her alone so Dane had to commit and she was just green and hanging in front. She'll be OK with that experience now.

goodwood"She's got a huge big long stride on her and on breeding ought to stay a little bit further but I'm not so sure she will with her racing style. This ground, with a bit of give, was ideal for her."

STARS TO SHINE SOFTLY

There are no grand plans yet for Stars Above Me, length and a half runner-up on her debut to Valonia in the Markel Insurance Fillies' Maiden. "I was really pleased with that," said trainer Roger Charlton of the daughter of Exceed And Excel, a 16/1 shot. "James [Doyle, jockey] said she was a bit gassy early and that the soft ground didn't suit her.

"But she finished off really well. We'll try to find a fast-ground six-furlong maiden for her, and take it gently from there."
