MOREIRA'S DREAM COMES TRUE

Godolphin's Ahtoug, trained by Charlie Appleby, won the five-furlong Barclays Shergar Cup Dash by three quarters of a length and provided Joao Moreira with his first British winner.

The Brazilian, who rides in Singapore and is champion jockey there, was thrilled with his achievement.

shergar cupHe said: "This makes me feel great. I am so glad to be here - just a delight. All of those people involved have done a great job. Getting a winner is just a dream come true for me.

"The horse was a little bit unsure about what he was doing. I probably got in front a little too soon and, once he got there, he started looking around.

"He changed his lead a couple of times but he was always strong to the line and he was going to win in the last furlong.

"It is just a pleasure to be here. I am not a magic man, just a lucky boy."

His 15 points maintained the Rest of World's third place on 28 points and his team edged closer to EUR on 36 and GBI on 43.

They also put him into second place in the race for the Silver Saddle - just three points behind the leader - James Doyle on 28 points.

EUROPE GETTING RACY AND HOMING IN ON HOME SIDE

Europe inched closer to leaders Great Britain and Ireland side in the race for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, when all three of their riders gained points.

Captain Gerald Mosse picked up four by dint of his horse being a non-runner, while Ioritz Mendizabal collected five points for finishing fourth on Zero Money and Andrasch Starke gained three points when Racy took fifth.

Europe moved to 36 points, seven behind the leaders. In the Silver Saddle, Mosse slipped to third despite moving to 21 points after being passed for second spot by Joao Moreira, who won this race for the Rest of the World on Ahtoug. James Doyle maintains the overall lead in that competition.

Mendizabal, who rode Zero Money for Newmarket trainer Hugo Palmer, said: "The pace was very quick, but I tried to ride a waiting race, rather than be too near the front. He finished very well, but did not have the speed to get there."

Starke, who rode Racy for trainer Brian Ellison, said: "I had a good position on the rail, but he was very flat and from two furlongs out found nothing. He just stayed on at one pace."

DOYLE LEADS THE FIELD FOR THE SADDLE

James Doyle scored 10 points for Team Great Britain & Ireland for his second place on the 11/4 joint favourite Steps.

Doyle said: "That fella ran a good race - he just curled up a bit when the winner hung into me - it didn't do me any favours. But I'm happy enough."

Doyle also leads the field in the race for the Silver Saddle, with 28 points from the winner of the third race, the Barclays Shergar Cup Dash, Joao Moreira, who is in second on 25 points.

Doyle reflected: "I am just there and hanging on in there at the moment."

The Silver Saddle is awarded to the leading rider at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and

Third place gained seven points but failed to lift the Girls off the foot of the table when Lisa Allpress pressed home Swan Song to the filly's first place from five efforts this season.

Allpress commented: "She was nice - she jumped and put herself into a nice spot I got pushed around a bit by the horse that won - I dont know whether they (the stewards) will say anything about that - but she did well. If she got a better draw next time and something to follow she will do better. There are still a few more races for us to claw back the points."
