Highland Duke gave Ryan
Tate his first winner at Goodwood when running out the four-length winner of
the third-day finale, the QIPCO Future Stars Apprentice Handicap. And in the
process he earned praise from his boss, the gelding's trainer Clive Cox.
"He gave the horse a super ride," he said. "They went hard up
front and he didn't panic, just found a rhythm and stuck to it.
"He rides with his
head and since he's joined us he's kept progressing. He's from good stock -
he's [ex-jockey] Jason Tate's son - and he eats and sleeps the job, which is
what you want."
Cox has yet to decide
which of his star sprinters, Lethal Force and Reckless Abandon, to run in
Sunday's Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. "I may run both," he
said, "but whatever I decide, it will have to be tomorrow. They're both in
good form. Apparently the ground was heavy on Monday but it will be drying
now."
APPRENTICE
TO HOSPITAL FOR CHECK AFTER FALL
Siohban Miller has been
taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, for precautionary x-rays to her
left shoulder.
The apprentice jockey had
a fall from 7/2 favourite Mean It when pulling up in the final race, the QIPCO
Future Stars Apprentice Handicap.
DOYLE BAN
James Doyle picked up a
two-day ban for his ride on Pythagorean, nose runner-up in the sixth race, the
Tatler Handicap. After an inquiry, the stewards found he had used his whip
above the permitted level and suspended him on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 August.
