Amazing Maria finally
justified her connections' view of her innate ability when she made it third
time successful in the British Stallion Studs New Ham Fillies' Maiden. Ridden
by Frankie Dettori in the seven-furlong contest, the 7/2 joint-favourite put
her opponents, headed by Inchila, to the sword by six lengths. "Nice
filly," said trainer Ed Dunlop succinctly afterwards. "Big. Scope."
The daughter of
Mastercraftsman, home-bred by owner Sir Robert Ogden, now has bigger targets on
the horizon, with the Fillies' Mile at her local track Newmarket her
end-of-season objective.
"Strange one of her
ability has taken three races to win," said Dunlop, "but I blame
myself for Newbury last time. She'd showed speed at home and I thought we'd get
away with six furlongs, and we didn't.
"When you know
they're good, and they get beat a couple of times you start to lose a bit of
confidence but now we can see we were right about her."
Amazing Maria is not
entirely straightforward; she wears a special halter under her bridle for
stalls entry. "Yarmy [Steve Dyble, horse psychologist] has done a great
job with settling her," added Dunlop.
The greatest disappointment
for the watching fans was that Dettori did not perform a flying dismount to
mark his first winner at this year's Glorious Goodwood, but he explained that
he put the grey filly's wellbeing before a photo opportunity.
"She's a hot
two-year-old filly," he said, "and I want to keep her calm, not rev
her up. We had high hopes for her in the spring and despite her not having won
I was confident today. She's shown what she's capable of and she's a very nice
filly with a real future."
INCHILA
DELIGHTS CONNECTIONS ON DEBUT
Inchila, trained by Peter
Chapple-Hyam, made an auspicious start to her racing career when finishing
six-lengths second on her debut in the EBF British Stallion Studs New Ham
Fillies' Maiden.
"She had been working
well but I don't think she had been asked too much at home," said Barry
Reilly, manager of owner-breeders Woodcote Stud. "They liked her from day
one and it will have taught her a lot.
"Some of the family
can be a bit hot but she was very chilled and the winner was already rated 96
coming into this. She's something to look forward to."
