Bagshot
trainer Brian Gubby embellished a very fine record at Goodwood when his Pal Of
The Cat took the final race at the Glorious meeting, 2013.
Owned and
bred by Gubby - and one of only two horses he trains - Pal Of The Cat was
ridden by Jimmy Quinn to land the Telegraph Handicap, his first success in 11
races.
Gubby
explained the gelding's name when saying: "He was stabled next door to Son
Of The Cat, who won the [Robins Farm Racing] Stewards' Sprint Handicap here two
years ago. 'Sonny' later died under anaesthetic during an operation, and as
this one wasn't named at the time we called him Pal Of The Cat.
"We
had a few pounds up our sleeve today and he's been working so well at home.
Richard Hughes rode him at Windsor the other day and I forgot to declare the
tongue strap. He gets his tongue over the bit and is a hot little fellow, but
that was the reason he was beaten last time.
"I
said to Jimmy, 'He's got plenty of toe, so if you can keep that going down the
hill throw the kitchen sink at him'. I didn't back him - my only bet of the day
was on Richard Hannon's Pether's Moon in the second race [the RAC Handicap]. I
won £100 on that, which paid for my fish dinner, and should have put some of it
on this one, but I didn't expect him to be that good."
