In taking the British
Stallion Studs Turf Club Fillies' Handicap, Ribbons completed a fine half-hour
for the Elite Racing Club. In the previous race, another of the ownership
group's home-breds, Stars Above Me, had finished second.
Ribbons easily took her
unbeaten record to four in the nine-furlong contest, defeating Rhagori by two
and three-quarter lengths under James Doyle. But she took her time getting to
the start, eventually having to be dismounted and led there.
"At Goodwood, when
you go to that start, you canter so far and then walk the last downhill four
furlongs," said Doyle. "When I pulled up and started to walk, she got
a bit agitated, so I jumped off and had to use quite a lot of persuasion to get
her there.
"She's not 100 per
cent straightforward, but in the race she was fine. It was a messy sort of race
- I got trapped a bit wide from my draw and they were going no pace - but she
did relax a bit and it worked out in the end."
Trainer James Fanshawe was
not present. Ribbons, by Manduro, and Stars Above Me, by Exceed And Excel, are
from the same family - their dams are half-sisters, out of Kalinka, to the best
Elite Racing colourbearer, the top-class miler Soviet Song.
