James Doyle gave Britain
and Ireland an early lead in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup when taking this
mile race on Nine Realms, gaining 15 points.
The winner, who is trained
by William Haggas, won by three-quarters of a length from the Joao Moreira-ridden
Famous Poet who picked up 10 points for the Rest of the World. Europe gained
seven points when Jack's Revenge finished third under Gerald Mosse.
Doyle, who clearly likes
the Berkshire racecourse after riding three Royal Ascot winners, said:
"That was a good start to the day and I've a couple of nice rides left. My
horse is nice and progressive, and he was a bit fresh on his first run of the
season, but he was in good nick today.
"He jumped from the
gate really fast even though I didn't get the best draw, and I was able to get
the rail. I went a sensible pace and wound it up. He quickened up well when I
gave him a tap.
"Things have gone
from strength to strength this season and I'm really enjoying it. It's a good
fun day today, and I'm hoping to get more points."
Haggas said: "He was
a bit fresh again today early on - he's a bit rusty and I think that he will
get better for that run.
"David Hearson [the
owner] has been extremely patient because it's very frustrating when a trainer
keeps saying this is a nice horse and then rings up the next week and says
'sorry, he's off for another four months'. It's been a tough, long road and
hopefully he's back now and we can have a bit of a run with him.
"David bred one of
the best horses we have ever had, Aqlaam, and he has sent us various progeny
out of his mare Bourbonella [the dam of Nine Realms]. We have a full-sister to
Aqlaam, an unraced three-year-old who is going to run in about a fortnight.
It's been a lucky association so far.
"We like to support
the concept of the Shergar Cup. We obviously love having horses at Ascot, they
are quite good races and it's good fun."
MOSSE ON
THE SCORESHEET
Gerald Mosse finished
third in the opening race, the Les Ambassadeurs Casino Shergar Cup Mile, on the
George Baker-trained Jack's Revenge, beaten three quarters of a length and a
short-head.
The French jockey, mainly
based in Hong Kong, made his comeback after a fall at Happy Valley on July 4 in
which he injured his left shoulder.
He said: "The ground
is good. I got a beautiful race. My horse had a lovely run, travelling well and
I thought he could win. But then he found the last 150 yards a bit
difficult."

STEVENS
DELIGHTED TO BE BACK AT ASCOT
Gary Stevens, who gained
three points for ROW when coming fifth on Roserrow, said: "Ascot never
loses its character. I just told Kieren Fallon that this place never gets old,
coming back here - it's been eight or nine years since I raced here
competitively but it was a lot of fun going out there, with this atmosphere.
"I don't know if I
have ever ridden that hard to save fifth money as I did just now but we earned
some points and it was a good way to start the day.
"The ground is riding
good to firm for me as an American, maybe on the firm side. I have been
watching the races here from Stateside and I have seen the horses are really
finishing up with a big burst of speed. There has been a number of track records
set earlier this spring, so it's riding very well. Rosie commented on the way
to the start how good the ground felt.
"When we left the
stalls, my horse jumped well and, carrying as much weight as we were, my tack
actually slipped back a couple of inches and it took me a couple of strides to
get comfortable.
"My horse fell into a
real nice rhythm but I would have preferred another horse out there doing some
dirty business, keeping things a little bit more honest. James rode a good race
- he rode a pace he wanted - and we picked up a long way out. My horse couldn't
so any more early on and they picked up another gear two furlongs out, which
was too much for my horse."
JOCKEYS
AFTER THE FIRST RACE
James Doyle, jockey of the
winner Nine Realms, said: "Just on the quick side of good."
Joao Moreira, who was
enjoying his first ever ride at Ascot and rode second Famous Poet to gain 10
points for ROW, said: "Unfortunately, I didn't win - I hate that - but it
was very good. The track is amazing and I am looking forward to the next
race."
Rosie Napravnik, on board
fourth Redact, and who scored the only points (5) for the Girls in the first,
said: "I had a great trip, the ground here is beautiful. We sat in a good
spot and finished very well. The owners (Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds III) and
the trainer (Richard Hannon) were very happy. We are going to need more points
than this."
Cathy Gannon, rider of
sixth Sam Sharp, said: "Lovely ground - good."
Kevin Manning, on board
eighth Boonga Roogeta, said: "Just on the slow side of good."
Lisa Allpress, jockey of
ninth Jacob Cats, said: "It was excellent - the horse jumped well and got
himself in a nice spot but wasn't quite good enough in the end. He was a
gentleman to ride but didn't have much left at the end."

James
Doyle (Great Britain)
Born:
Cambridge, April 22, 1988 Background: Doyle comes from a racing
family. His mother Jacqui formerly trained in Lambourn while his sister Sophie
is also a jockey. He began riding out for his mother at the age of 10 and had
his first winner on Farnborough at Wolverhampton on June 1, 2005. He hit the
headlines with a treble at Lingfield on January 25, 2006. But after quickly
riding out his claim, the 5ft 9in Doyle - one of the tallest jockeys in the
weighing room - saw the winners begon to dry up and by 2010 he considered
turning his back on racing and even enrolled on a plumbing course. However, an
upturn in the number of winners in 2011 caused Doyle to reconsider his decision
and he never started the plumbing course. Horse whisperer Gary Witheford
recommended Doyle to trainer Roger Charlton and he became first jockey to the
Beckhampton handler in 2012. The partnership started 2012 on a high when
Cityscape won the Group One Dubai Duty Free at Meydan in March of that year and
have enjoyed a fantastic 2013 with the three-time Group One winner Al Kazeem.
He rode a891/1 treble on the Wednesday of Royal Ascot this year with Al Kazeem
in the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Belgian Bill in the Royal Hunt Cup and Rizeena
in the Queen Mary Stakes Big-Race Wins: Coral Eclipse (2013 Al Kazeem),
Prince of Wales's Stakes (2013 Al Kazeem), Tattersalls Gold Cup (2013 Al
Kazeem), Dubai Duty Free Sponsored By Dubai Duty Free (2012 Cityscape) Participated
in 2012 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup (1 win). A total of two Dubai Duty Free
Shergar Cup wins
